The Third Federal Electoral District of Chiapas(III Distrito Electoral Federal de Chiapas) is one of the 300 Electoral Districts into which Mexico is divided for the purpose of elections to the federal Chamber of Deputies and one of 12 such districts in the state of Chiapas.

Mexico, officially the United Mexican States, is a country in the southern portion of North America. It is bordered to the north by the United States; to the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; to the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and to the east by the Gulf of Mexico. Covering almost 2,000,000 square kilometers (770,000 sq mi), the nation is the fourth largest country in the Americas by total area and the 13th largest independent state in the world. With an estimated population of over 129 million people, Mexico is the tenth most populous country and the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world, while being the second most populous nation in Latin America after Brazil. Mexico is a federation comprising 31 states plus Mexico City (CDMX), which is the capital city and its most populous city. Other metropolises in the country include Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Toluca, Tijuana, and León.

The Chamber of Deputies is the lower house of the Congress of the Union, the bicameral legislature of Mexico. The other chamber is the Senate. The structure and responsibilities of both chambers of Congress are defined in Articles 50 to 70 of the current constitution.

Chiapas, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Chiapas, is one of the 31 states that, along with Mexico City, make up the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It is divided into 124 municipalities as of September 2017 and its capital city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Other important population centers in Chiapas include Ocosingo, Tapachula, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Comitán and Arriaga. It is the southernmost state in Mexico. It is located in Southeastern Mexico, and it borders the states of Oaxaca to the west, Veracruz to the northwest and Tabasco to the north, and by the Petén, Quiché, Huehuetenango and San Marcos departments of Guatemala to the east and southeast. Chiapas has a coastline along the Pacific Ocean to the south.

District territory

The Third District of Chiapas is located in the extreme east of the state and covers much of the Lacandon Jungle. It comprises the municipalities of Altamirano, Benemérito de las Américas, Chanal, Las Margaritas, Maravilla Tenejapa, Marqués de Comillas, Ocosingo and Oxchuc.^[1]

The Lacandon Jungle is an area of rainforest which stretches from Chiapas, Mexico, into Honduras and into the southern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. The heart of this rainforest is located in the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas near the border with Guatemala in the Montañas del Oriente region of the state. Although most of the jungle outside the reserve has been partially or completely destroyed and damage continues inside the Reserve, the Lacandon is still the largest montane rainforest in North America and one of the last ones left large enough to support jaguars. It contains 1,500 tree species, 33% of all Mexican bird species, 25% of all Mexican animal species, 56% of all Mexican diurnal butterflies and 16% of all Mexico's fish species.

Benemérito de las Américas is a town and one of the 122 Municipalities of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. It covers an area of 979.2 km² and borders Guatemala.

Chanal is a town and one of the 119 Municipalities of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. It covers an area of 295.6 km².

The district's head town (cabecera distrital), where results from individual polling stations are gathered together and collated, is the city of Ocosingo.

Ocosingo is a city and its surrounding municipality (municipio) of the same name in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Previous districting schemes

1996–2005 district

Between 1996 and 2005, the Third District was broadly the same as under the current scheme, with the following differences:

Chanal was a part of the Eighth District.
The Third District also included San Juan Cancuc and Sitalá.
Benemérito de las Américas, Maravilla Tenejapa and Marqués de Comillas had not yet been given municipal status; however, they belonged to the municipality of Ocosingo and so were included in the district by that token.^[2]

San Juan Cancuc is a town and one of the 119 Municipalities of Chiapas, in southern Mexico.

Sitalá is a town and one of the 119 Municipalities of Chiapas, in southern Mexico. It is, lamentably, one of the poorest municipalities of Chiapas and Mexico.

Maravilla Tenejapa is a town and one of the 119 Municipalities of Chiapas, in southern Mexico.

The L Legislature of the Mexican Congress met from 1976 to 1979. It consisted of senators and deputies who were members of their respective chambers. They began their duties on September 1, 1976 and ended on August 31, 1979.

The LIV Legislature of the Congress of the Union met from September 1, 1988, to August 31, 1991.

The LV Legislature of the Congress of the Union met from September 1, 1991, to August 31, 1994.
