The Tenth Federal Electoral District of Chiapas(X Distrito Electoral Federal de Chiapas) is one of the 300 Electoral Districts into which Mexico is divided for the purpose of elections to the federal Chamber of Deputies and one of 12 such districts in the state of Chiapas.

The Chamber of Deputies is the lower house of the Congress of the Union, the bicameral legislature of Mexico. The other chamber is the Senate. The structure and responsibilities of both chambers of Congress are defined in Articles 50 to 70 of the current constitution.

Chiapas State of Mexico

Chiapas, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Chiapas, is one of the 31 states that, along with Mexico City, make up the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It is divided into 124 municipalities as of September 2017 and its capital city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez. Other important population centers in Chiapas include Ocosingo, Tapachula, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Comitán and Arriaga. It is the southernmost state in Mexico. It is located in Southeastern Mexico, and it borders the states of Oaxaca to the west, Veracruz to the northwest and Tabasco to the north, and by the Petén, Quiché, Huehuetenango and San Marcos departments of Guatemala to the east and southeast. Chiapas has a coastline along the Pacific Ocean to the south.

It elects one deputy to the lower house of Congress for each three-year legislative period, by means of the first past the post system.

District territory

The Tenth District of Chiapas comprises the municipalities of Ángel Albino Corzo, Cintalapa, Jiquipilas, La Concordia, Montecristo de Guerrero, Villa Corzo and Villaflores. [1]

The district's head town (cabecera distrital), where results from individual polling stations are gathered together and collated, is the city of Villaflores.

Previous districting schemes

1996–2005 district

Between 1996 and 2005, the Tenth District was located in a different region of Chiapas, closer to the Guatemala border. It covered the municipalities of Ángel Albino Corzo, Amatenango de la Frontera, Bejucal de Ocampo, Bella Vista, Chicomuselo, El Porvenir, La Grandeza, Mazapa de Madero, Motozintla and Siltepec. [2]

Chicomuselo is a municipio (municipality) in the Mexican state of Chiapas, and also the name of the municipality's largest settlement and the seat of the municipal government. The municipality has an area of 1,043 km².

The Tenth District of Chiapas was created in 1996. Between 1979 and 1996, Chiapas only had nine federal electoral districts. The Tenth District elected its first deputy, to the 57th Congress, in 1997.
