Christina-Marie Elise Sablan (born May 18,1981),also known as Tina Sablan,is a Northern Marianan politician and former news anchor in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). A member of the Democratic Party,Sablan was a member of the Commonwealth House of Representatives,representing Precinct Two.
Sablan was the Democratic Party candidate for CNMI Governor in the 2022 election,where she was the first female nominee from any major party. [1] [2] Sablan finished in third place in the election. In the runoff election Sablan endorsed Arnold Palacios over incumbent Governor Ralph Torres. [3] After Palacios won the runoff election,Sablan joined his administration as a pro-bono senior policy advisor. [4] [5]
Sablan was born to Eugenio and Carmela Sablan on Saipan on May 18,1981. She grew up in the communities of Chalan Kanoa and Tanapag. In 2003,Sablan received her bachelor's degree (B.S.) in conservation science from the College of Santa Fe. In 2016,she received a master's degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa,where she also received a graduate certificate in conflict resolution. [6]
Sablan rose to local prominence from 2005 to 2007 as a key leader in the "Beautify CNMI coalition",which organized islandwide cleanups. [7] Sablan served within the Northern Mariana Islands' Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ) as a waste reduction and recycling coordinator. [8]
In the realm of journalism,Sablan worked as a news reporter and anchor for KSPN2. [9] Additionally,Sablan served as program manager of the Commonwealth Cancer Association,an anti-cancer group. [10] As of April 15,2023,Sablan is the Democratic National Committeewoman from the Northern Mariana Islands. [11]
In 2007,Sablan was elected to the House of Representatives for the 16th Legislature,which made her the youngest member of the legislature at the time. [12] Sablan edged out independent candidate Janet Maratita for the last of the six seats in Precinct One. [13] [14] However,she was defeated when she ran for Commonwealth Senate in 2009. [6] After this defeat,Sablan joined the staff of territorial delegate,Gregorio Sablan,serving as his deputy communications director and outreach coordinator. [9]
In 2018,she returned to the House of Representatives as one of two representatives for Precinct Two,and was reelected in 2020. [12] Saban is a supporter of expanding eligibility for the earned income tax credit (EITC),and introduced legislation to repeal NMI Public Law 11-25 (1998),which limited the EITC. [15] A supporter of LGBT rights,Sablan introduced anti-discrimination legislation to add protections for gender identity and sexual orientation in housing,healthcare,and employment. [16]
As a territorial representative,she was appointed by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to serve on the agency's Small Communities Advisory Subcommittee. [17] Sablan currently serves as Chair of the House Committee on Health and Welfare in the Commonwealth House of Representatives. [18] In this capacity,she testified before the United States Congress about the need to end racial disparities in healthcare. [19]
As early as 2008 during her first term in the territorial legislature, Sablan was speculated on as a possible future gubernatorial candidate. [20] Sablan was a gubernatorial candidate in the 2022 election, where she faced incumbent Republican Governor Ralph Torres and Independent candidate Arnold Palacios. Her candidacy was endorsed by the territorial Democratic Party, and additionally received the support of territorial delegate Gregorio Sablan. [2] [21] In the November election, Sablan finished in third place with 28% of the vote. [22]

The Covenant Party was a political party in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) advocating governmental and financial reform. It was named after the Covenant to Establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in Political Union with the United States of America, Act of Mar. 24, 1976, Pub. L. 94-241, 90 Stat. 263, codified as amended at 48 U.S.C. § 1801 note. In the legislative elections of 2003, the Covenant Party won nine of eighteen seats. The party mostly made up of members from the Republican Party, but many prominent Democrats would also join the party. In the 2005 general elections, the Covenant Party increased its position as one of the strongest parties in the Commonwealth when Benigno R. Fitial, the party's gubernatorial candidate, won the election. The Covenant Party won seven of eighteen seats in the commonwealth's House of Representatives and three of nine seats in its Senate. In the Commonwealth Legislature 2007 elections, the Covenant Party won only four of twenty seats in the House of Representatives.

The CNMI Republican Party is a political party in the Northern Mariana Islands. The Northern Mariana Islands Republican Party is now associated with the United States Republican Party though no Northern Mariana Islands politicians have achieved high-ranking positions in the mainland United States.
General elections were held in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) on Saturday, 5 November 2005, electing the governor and Legislature. There was also a referendum on calling a Constitutional Convention, which was approved by voters. The gubernatorial election was the closest in the commonwealth's history, and resulted in the election of Benigno Fitial, narrowly defeating independent Heinz Hofschneider by 84 votes and incumbent Republican Governor Juan N. Babauta by an additional 98 votes. This would be the last year that the gubernatorial race would work in a first-past-the-post voting system as it would be reformed to work under a two-round system for the 2009 general elections. This election made commonwealth history by electing both the territory's first Carolinian governor and its first third party governor.

Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan is a Northern Mariana Islander politician and former election commissioner. Elected in 2008, Sablan became the first delegate to the United States House of Representatives from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Sablan is the only Chamorro member of Congress.
The 2009 Northern Mariana Islands general election was held on Saturday, November 7, 2009. This was the last general election to be held on a odd year. This election also saw the extension all office holding officials by one year to move the elections to even-years, corresponding with the elections of other federal and state offices, including the nationwide United States House of Representatives elections and the United States general elections. This election also oversaw the first run-off to be held in the Northern Mariana Islands, which were held on Monday, November 23, 2009. Benigno Fitial became the first governor to win a second term since 1985 and the first time a candidate won a majority since 1993 thanks to the newly implemented run-off voting system.

Ralph Deleon Guerrero Torres is a Northern Marianan politician, who served as the eighth governor of the Northern Mariana Islands, from December 29, 2015, to January 9, 2023. He is a Republican from Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). The third longest-serving governor in CNMI history, Torres took office upon the death of Governor Eloy Inos on December 29, 2015, before being reelected as governor in his own right in 2018. He previously served as the tenth lieutenant governor, having been elected to that post in 2014.

Originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 6 November, 2018, the elections were delayed by one week due to the impact and aftermath of Typhoon Yutu. Early voting was held from Tuesday, 6 November, until Monday, 12 November, 2018. An estimated 18,975 voters were eligible to vote in the 2018 election.

This election also saw the first time the Democratic Party contested the governorship since the 2014 Northern Mariana Islands general election and the first time said party received more than 10% of the popular vote since the 2005 Northern Mariana Islands general election.
