Tongue 'n' Cheek were a British electro music group formed by Robin Achampong and Delroy Murray of Total Contrast, that were primarily popular in the UK club scene between 1987 and 1992. The group's members were Conor Col Henry, Maureen Mason and Junior Williams. [1]

Overview

All of the group's eight singles charted on the UK Singles Chart, [2] however they were more noticeable on the UK Dance Chart. All of the group's four singles released by EMI entered the top ten of the UK Dance Chart with their album reaching No. 3 on the UK Album Dance Chart.

The group's biggest UK chart hit single was "Tomorrow", which spent weeks in the charts and peaked at No. 20. [2] It was remixed by Chicago DJ Frankie Knuckles. Follow-up singles included "Nobody" (UK #37) and "Forget Me Nots" (UK #26), a cover of the Patrice Rushen song remixed by electronic music producers DNA, best known for the remix of Suzanne Vega's UK top 5 single "Tom's Diner". The group also had an album, This Is Tongue 'N' Cheek, which reached No. 45 on the UK Albums Chart. [1] [2]

The band appeared on the BBC show Top of the Pops twice with singles "Forget Me Nots" and "Tomorrow", and also appeared on various TV shows including This Morning with Richard and Judy, The Derek Jameson Show , The Hit Man and Her and were regulars on The Chart Show .

At the end of 1990, Tongue 'n' Cheek had one of the top 100 best-selling UK dance singles ahead of American groups Bell Biv DeVoe and Hi-Five.

The band regularly performed touring Europe with various UK R&B acts of the time such as Soul II Soul, the Pasadenas, Dina Carroll, Glen Goldsmith and supported the band Imagination on their UK tour.

Tongue 'n' Cheek's single "Tomorrow" appeared on the Now That's What I Call Music 17 album which went platinum, selling over 300,000 copies. The band have also appeared on compilation albums which have sold over two million copies worldwide.

The lyrical content from "Tomorrow" was sampled by house music group Love Decade on their 1996 single "Is This a Dream" which reached No. 39 on the UK Singles Chart. [3] The lyrical content from "Nobody (Can Love Me)" was sampled by Acen. The lyrics – albeit speeded up and altered, formed part of Acen's darkcore single "Trip II the Moon", which reached No. 38 on the UK Singles Chart in August 1992. [4]

Way Out West are an English electronic music duo comprising Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren. Originating in Bristol, England, they rose to fame in the 1990s with their UK-charting singles "The Gift" and "Ajare", and their debut studio album Way Out West was released in 1997 to critical and commercial success. Judy Cheeks is an American singer and actress. In the 1970s and 1980s, she recorded as a soul and R&B singer, before releasing more dance-oriented music in the 1990s. Cheeks performed with Ike & Tina Turner as an Ikette. She also worked as a backing vocalist for various artists such as Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Amanda Lear, and David Knopfler.

Funkstar De Luxe is a Danish house producer and remixer. He is best known for his million-selling reworking of Bob Marley's "Sun Is Shining".

Jam & Spoon were a German electronic music duo formed in 1991 in Frankfurt. The group consisted of composers and producers Rolf Ellmer and Markus Löffel. They also worked under the pseudonyms Tokyo Ghetto Pussy, Storm and Big Room. Under these pseudonyms, the credits on the albums are listed as Trancy Spacer and Spacy Trancer.

"Forget Me Nots" is a 1982 song co-written and performed by American R&B musician Patrice Rushen. It appears on her seventh album, Straight from the Heart. Making a radical shift in her music, Rushen would continue to harness the particular style of this record all through to her next album Now, released in 1984.

"Feels Like I'm in Love" is a song written and recorded by Ray Dorset with his band Mungo Jerry. It was a number-one hit on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in September 1980 for Scottish singer Kelly Marie.

Kate Cameron is an English house and trance music singer with a rich alto voice. She signed with MCA in the Dance/Pop band GMT in 1991, releasing "Feel So Good" and "Inner City Blues" before the band were dropped in 1993. Cameron then worked as a session singer, coming to prominence via her involvement with Norman Cook as the vocalist on his 'Pizza Man' single, "P.A.S.S.I.O.N." which went on to be a hit for Jon of the Pleased Wimmin, peaking at number 27 in the UK chart in 1995. Her vocals also featured at this time on Zion Train's album Grow Together, singing lead on "Stand Up and Fight" and the single "Rise" released in 1996 on China. QFX (band) Musical artist

QFX are an electronic dance music group formed in 1992. Their music style is generally a mix of bouncy techno and happy hardcore.

Liquid Gold was an English disco group, from Brackley in Northamptonshire. Their biggest success came in 1980 with "Dance Yourself Dizzy", which peaked at number two on the UK chart.

"Southern Freeez" produced by John Rocca was the first single released by British dance band Freeez from their debut album, also entitled Southern Freeez. The album was self-funded by member John Rocca and initially released on his Pink Rhythm record label before the group was signed to Beggars Banquet.

Rozalla Miller, better known as simply Rozalla, is a Zambian-born Zimbabwean electronic music performer who was born in what was then Northern Rhodesia,, to a Zimbabwean father. She later moved with her parents at the age of 18 to her father's country of origin, Zimbabwe. She is best known for her three 1991/92 hit singles "Faith ", "Are You Ready To Fly", and particularly "Everybody's Free ", which has been remixed and re-issued several times. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as the 98th most successful dance artist of all-time.

"Trip II the Moon" also known as "Trip II the Moon " is a 1992 single by breakbeat hardcore musician Acen Razvi. It went on to become his signature song and only British top 40 single, reaching No. 38 on UK Singles Chart on 8 August 1992.
