Torre Canne is a southeastern Italian coastal village and hamlet ( frazione ) of the municipality of Fasano in the Province of Brindisi, Apulia. As of 2011 its population was 448. [1]

History

The village received some attention from the German media on October 23 1985, when serial killer Norbert Poehlke, and his son Gabriel, were found dead of bullet wounds in what appeared to be a murder-suicide. Poehlke was a police officer in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, who murdered three motorists and used their cars in bank robberies across the state. He was dubbed 'Der Hammermörder' (The Hammer-Killer) because of his use of sledgehammers during the robberies, although his identity would not be revealed until after his suicide. Poehlke had also shot dead his wife and another son, Adrian, before fleeing with Gabriel to Italy; police found their bodies at the family home in Backnang three days prior to Poehlke's suicide.

Geography

Torre Canne is located on the Adriatic Coast, between Savelletri and Rosa Marina, 11 km east of Fasano. It is 20 km far from Ostuni, 24 from Monopoli, 26 from Martina Franca, 54 from Brindisi, 62 from Taranto and 67 from Bari.

Economy

The biggest industry of the village is fishing. Tourism, related to the sea and to the local spa, increased in the second half of the 20th century.

Transport

Cisternino station, on the Adriatic railway, is few km from the village. The SS 16 highway "Adriatica" Padova-Otranto serves it with the exit "Torre Canne".

Maury Travis American serial killer

Maury Troy Travis was an American murderer and suspected serial killer who committed suicide in custody in St. Louis County, Missouri, after being arrested for murder. Travis was named in a federal criminal complaint for the murders of two women. At the time of the murders, he was a hotel waiter and on parole for a 1989 robbery. While Travis claimed in a letter to have murdered seventeen women, some authorities were doubtful; others thought he may have murdered up to twenty women.

Volker Eckert was a German serial killer, who killed six women in East Germany, France, and Spain, between 1974 and 2006. Eckert confessed to only six murders, five of whom were sex workers, but is known to have killed at least nine women, and is also accused of committing additional murders of women in several European countries including Italy and the Czech Republic, but investigations were closed after Eckert committed suicide during his criminal proceedings on July 2, 2007.

Donato "Walter" Bilancia, is an Italian serial killer who murdered seventeen people – nine women and eight men – on the Italian Riviera in the period from October 1997 to May 1998.

Grim Sleeper American serial killer (1952–2020)

Lonnie David Franklin, Jr., better known by the nickname Grim Sleeper, was an American serial killer who was responsible for at least ten murders and one attempted murder in Los Angeles, California. He was also convicted for rape and sexual violence. Franklin earned his nickname when he appeared to have taken a 14-year break from his crimes, from 1988 to 2002.

Punta Torre Canne Lighthouse is an active lighthouse in the homonymous village in the municipality of Fasano. The place takes the name from an ancient coastal tower built in the 16th century to protect the coast from the Turks, and from the presence of giant cane.
