Tota Roy Chowdhury is an Indian actor who predominantly works in Bengali and Hindi cinema. [1] He is also known for his versatile acting performances, fitness, martial arts and dance moves. [2] [3] His notable roles include Feluda in the web TV series Feluda Pherot [4] based on Satyajit Ray's Feluda series, Chandon Chatterjee in Karan Johar's film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani and Rohit Sen in Star Jalsha's daily soap Sreemoyee. He made his big screen debut opposite Miss Jojo in Prabhat Roy's Bengali film Duranta Prem (1993). [6] His breakthrough role came with Rituparno Ghosh's National Award winning Bengali film Chokher Bali (2003). [7]

Career

Early career

During his second year in college, he made up his mind to join the Indian Army and was preparing for the CDS exams when fate intervened and he was asked by the director Prabhat Roy to play a small role in his film. That one film brought other offers and soon he decided to become a professional actor. After starring in a few commercially successful films, he was spotted by director Rituparno Ghosh and cast opposite Nandita Das in his film Shubho Mahurat. [8]

Breakthrough

Chowdhury was cast again opposite Aishwarya Rai in Rituparno's Tagore adaptation, Chokher Bali . He won several awards, including the BFJA Award for the Best Actor.

After Chokher Bali, he did several films both commercial and mainstream like Aborto , Biye Not Out, Choukaath, Benche Thakar Gaan, Bolo Na Tumi Aamar , Paglu 2 , Villain, and Shapath which cemented his position in the Bengali film industry.

He did an extended cameo in the AR Murugadoss directed Kaththi which introduced him into Tamil film industry. He also starred in the Sujoy Ghosh directed short film Ahalya alongside Soumitra Chatterjee and Radhika Apte, which went viral and he was noticed for his powerful presence as the police inspector. He then played the role of Arun in the film Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh ; directed by Sujoy Ghosh opposite Vidya Balan, [9] which got him noticed by the Hindi film industry. His second Hindi film Indu Sarkar [10] directed by Madhur Bhandarkar was released in 2017. He was cast opposite Kirti Kulhari and his portrayal of the troubled government servant Navin fetched him recognition and praises. Industry veteran Anupam Kher tweeted "Tota in Indu Sarkar is a brilliant piece of casting" and Asutosh Gowariker tweeted "Superb performance by Tota Roy Choudhury".

His next film was Helicopter Eela, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, where he was cast opposite Kajol. His portrayal of the psychologically disturbed Arun fetched him positive reviews. He then did a cameo in The Girl on the Train , a Hindi remake of English film of the same name.

He also plays the iconic Bengali detective Feluda created by Satyajit Ray, in a web series directed by the multiple National Award winner Srijit Mukherji. [11]

In 2023, he recently acted in Karan Johar's directorial comeback Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani ; along with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. His performance, with regards to acting and Kathak dance, in this film has grabbed a lot of attention and accolades.

Feluda, or Prodosh Chandra Mitra [Mitter], is a fictional detective, private investigator created by Indian director and writer Satyajit Ray. Feluda resides at 21 Rajani Sen Road, Ballygunge, Calcutta, West Bengal. Feluda first made his appearance in a Bengali children's magazine called Sandesh in 1965, under the editorialship of Ray and Subhas Mukhopadhyay. His first adventure was Feludar Goendagiri. Feluda is one of the most impactful Bengali characters of all time.

Rituparno Ghosh was an Indian film director, actor, writer and lyricist. After pursuing a degree in economics, he started his career as a creative artist at an advertising agency. He received recognition for his second feature film Unishe April which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Having won 19 National Awards, along with his contemporaries Aparna Sen and Goutam Ghose, Rituparno heralded contemporary Bengali cinema to greater heights. Ghosh died on 30 May 2013 in Kolkata after a heart attack. Ghosh was also one of the openly homosexual personalities in Indian cinema.

Lalmohan Ganguly, alias Jatayu is a fictional character in the Feluda stories written by Satyajit Ray. He writes pulp crime thrillers, but is quite weak and nervous in real life. He is fairly wealthy due to the immense sales of his books. He writes at a frequency of two books a year. His crime fiction stories have interesting and catchy names, often characterised by alliterations like 'Sahara-ey Shiharan', 'Honduras-e Hahakar', 'Borneo-r Bibhishika', 'Durdharsh Dushman', 'Vancouver-er Vampire', 'Himalaye Hritkampo', 'Atlantic-er Atanka', 'Anobik Danob', 'Naroker Naam Karakoram', 'Bidghute Bodmash', 'Arokto Arab' etc. The names of several Feluda stories also exhibit this feature, for example Joto Kando Kathmandute, Gangtokey Gondogol, Royal Bengal Rahasya, Robertsoner Ruby, Gosainpur Sargaram, Bombaiyer Bombete, Gorosthane Sabdhan, Kailashey Kelenkari, Bhuswargo Bhayankar, etc. The detective of Jatayu's novel, Prakhar Rudra, is a character with incredible intellect and power. Lalmohan's grandfather gave his name "Sarbogya Gongopadhyay" but Lalmohan does not use that name.

He is the son of veteran Bollywood actor Biswajit Chatterjee. He began his acting career as a child actor in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Chotto Jigyasa, for which he won the Bengal Film Journalists' Association – Most Outstanding Work of the Year Award. Following this he appeared in other films as a child actor. But unable to concentrate on his studies, Prosenjit took a break from acting and returned after completing his graduation from Xavier's University and his first leading role came through Bimal Roy's Duti Pata.

<i>Chokher Bali</i> (film) 2003 Indian film

Chokher Bali is a 2003 Indian Bengali language drama film based on the 1903 novel Chokher Bali by Rabindranath Tagore. It was directed by Rituparno Ghosh in 2003 and stars Aishwarya Rai as Binodini and Raima Sen as Ashalata. Ashalata and Binodini refer to each other as Chokher Bali. The other major characters are played by Prosenjit Chatterjee as Mahendra, Lily Chakravarty as Rajlakshmi, the mother of Mahendra, Tota Roy Chowdhury as Behari, Rajlakshmi's adopted son, and Swastika Mukherjee in a cameo role. The film was later dubbed into Hindi and was released internationally in that language.

<i>Hatyapuri</i> (film) 2022 film by Sandip Ray

Hatyapuri is a 2022 Indian Bengali-language thriller film directed by Sandip Ray based on the novel of the same name by Satyajit Ray, which was originally published in 1979. The film stars Indraneil Sengupta as Feluda. The film worked as a second reboot after the first reboot film Badshahi Angti (2014) and also a loose sequel of Badshahi Angti. The movie was released theatrically on December 23, 2022. It was subsequently released online on June 2, 2023, on ZEE5.
