Trace Worthington (born November 28, 1969) is an American former freestyle skier. He competed in two events at the 1994 Winter Olympics. [1] After retiring from the sport, Worthington became a sports commentator, [2] working for both NBC Sports and CBS Sports. [3]

Biography

Worthington was born in 1969 in Minneapolis, and began skiing at the age of two. [2] [4] His great-grandfather, Harry, competed in the men's long jump at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. [5] After moving to Winter Park, Colorado, Worthington took part in his first freestyle skiing competition when he was 14 years old. [2] In 1986, he was the World Junior Champion in the aerials, winning the US title the next year. [2]

From 1992 to 1995, Worthington was named the Freestyle Skier of the Year by Ski Racing magazine, [1] and in 1993, he was also named the International Skier of the Year. [1] Worthington won a total of 39 World Cup events, and finished on the podium 79 times during his career. [1] [2] At the 1995 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, he was the World Champion in both the aerials and combined events, the first time one person had held both titles. [1] [2]

Worthington took part in freestyle skiing as a demonstration event at the 1992 Winter Olympics. [2] At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Worthington competed in the men's moguls and the men's aerials, [6] with a best placed finish of fifth in the aerials event. [7] [8] Just prior to the 1994 Winter Olympics, Worthington injured his right knee in training. [9]

Worthington retired from the sport in 1997, due to vertigo, [2] [10] becoming a sports commentator. [1] [11] He also opened his own television production company. [1] He was inducted into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2006. [2] [12]

Kanthaugen Freestyle Arena is a freestyle skiing stadium located in the hillside area of Kanthaugen in Lillehammer, Norway. Opened in 1992, it was built for the 1994 Winter Olympics. The venue consists of three hills—one each for aerials, moguls and ski ballet. The moguls hill has a capacity for 12,000 spectators while the other two have a 15,000-person capacity. The arena is designated as Norway's national venue for freestyle skiing. It hosted the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup in 1993 and 1995, and is scheduled to host freestyle skiing and snowboarding at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics. The arena is owned by Lillehammer Olympiapark and is located adjacent to the ski jumping hill Lysgårdsbakken.

Alexandre Bilodeau is a Canadian retired freestyle skier from Rosemere, Quebec, Bilodeau currently resides in Montreal, Quebec. Bilodeau won a gold medal in the men's moguls at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, becoming the first Canadian to win a gold medal at an Olympic Games held in Canada. At the 2014 Winter Olympics, he became the first Olympian in history to defend his gold medal in any freestyle skiing event as well as the first Canadian to defend an individual title since Catriona Le May Doan at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Bilodeau is a three-time FIS World Champion in dual moguls, and is also a two-time Worlds silver medallist in moguls. He was the FIS World Cup champion for the 2008–09 season winning the moguls and overall freestyle skiing title that season. In his final World Cup race, he retired with a win, and in doing so, surpassed Jean-Luc Brassard for the most World Cup medals by a Canadian.

Ski ballet is a form of ballet performed on skis. It is very similar to figure skating, combining spins, jumps, and flips in a two-minute routine choreographed to music. It was part of the professional freestyle skiing tours of the 1970s and 1980s and then an official FIS and Olympic discipline until the year 2000. Ski ballet became known as Acroski in the 1990s in an effort to legitimize its place among the competitive ski community, especially to the FIS. It is no longer a part of competitive freestyle skiing.

Christopher Lillis is an American freestyle skier. In the 2022 Winter Olympics, he won a gold medal in the mixed team aerials event.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cole McDonald (skier)</span> American freestyle skier

Cole McDonald is an American freestyle skier. He joined the US Ski & Snowboard's U.S. Freestyle Ski Team in July 2021. In the same season as his first World Cup, he earned a spot on the U.S. Men's Moguls Team at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, making him the youngest American male mogul skier to participate in the Olympics at 18 years of age. McDonald was named World Cup Rookie of the Year in 2022.
