Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. They subsequently dropped out of their studies to concentrate further on the band that would eventually become Dream Theater. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remained together until September 8, 2010, when Portnoy left the band and he was replaced several months later by Mike Mangini. James LaBrie has been the lead singer of Dream Theater since 1991, replacing Charlie Dominici who had left the band two years earlier. Dream Theater's first keyboardist, Kevin Moore, left the band after three albums and was replaced by Derek Sherinian in 1995 after a period of touring. Transatlantic is a multinational progressive rock supergroup consisting of Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas and Mike Portnoy. With it, the band decided to create "a classic Dream Theater album", drawing upon their various stylistic influences while trying to make the music less complex. The album takes its creative concept from the musical octave.

Octavarium Tour was a tour by American progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater. They began touring in support of Octavarium in Europe on June 10, 2005, beginning at the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg. The main Octavarium world tour began in September in Finland after the band finished performing for six weeks during Gigantour 2005, and saw the band continue with their "An Evening With Dream Theater" concert format. This meant the band would play for almost three hours, with a different setlist each evening.
Metropolis 2000 Tour was the main world tour by progressive metal/rock band Dream Theater, promoting Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory album. The tour began January 31, 2000 in Phoenix, Arizona, US, and concluded October 21, 2000 in London, England. The tour to support the album was unusual in that every show started with a full performance of the entire album, something the band had never done before with any of their previous albums.
