Tree of Jesse is an egg tempera painting by Victor. Victor was a Cretan painter active during the Late Cretan School from 1650 to 1697. He traveled all over the Venetian empire and eventually settled in Zakinthos. He represents the Late Cretan School and the early Heptanese School of painting. The painter features an enormous amount of existing works. His catalog of art exceeds over ninety-five paintings. He painted several versions of the Tree of Jesse and Christ the Vine. [1]

Jesse of Bethlehem was the father of King David. The Tree of Jesse is the original use of the family tree as a schematic representation of genealogy and originated in a passage from the biblical Book of Isaiah. The book describes the descent of the Messiah (Mashiach) and the tree is the depiction in art of the ancestors of Jesus Christ. According to Luke's Gospel, chapter 3, Jesus is traced back, via Nathan to David and then on to "Adam, which was [the son] of God.". (Luke 3:23–38 ) Matthew's Gospel also says: "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham." (Matthew 1:1 ). [2]

The Tree of Jesse (Ρίζα του Ιεσσαί) has appeared numerous times in Greek Italian Byzantine art and it depicts the ancestral Davidic line of Jesus Christ. One of the earliest known sculpted versions of the Tree of Jesse was completed by Italian sculptor Lorenzo Maitani in the 14th century for Orvieto Cathedral Umbria, Italy. Several illuminated manuscripts from the 12th century also feature the Tree of Jesse. Northern European painters adopted the theme in the 15th century German painter Absolon Stumme completed his work entitled Tree of Jesse in 1499 and Dutch painter Jan Mostaert finished his work Tree of Jesse in 1500. Both works feature Abraham as the root of the tree. Cretan painters began to adopt the theme, Theophanes the Cretan finished his Tree of Jesse for the Agia Trapeza in the middle of the 1500s for the Monastery of Great Lavra in Mount Athos and by the 1600s dozens of Cretan painters began to depict the Tree of Jesse. [3] Theodore Poulakis completed his version of the Tree of Jesse in 1666 and Victor completed his work eight years afterward. That same year in 1674 he also finished his rendition of Christ the Vine (Victor) . The current work of art is located at the Hellenic Institute of Venice in Venice, Italy. [4] [5] [6] [2]

Description

Tree of Jesse is a tempera painting on gold leaf and wood panel. The height is 52 cm (20.4 in) and the width is 40.3 cm (15.9 in). It is almost identical in size to Victor's Christ the Vine which was completed the same year. The icon features the ancestral Davidic line of Jesus Christ and is the pictorial representation of the former Kings of Israel. Luckily the painter labeled each figure with the Greek inscription of their names. The biblical figures include from the top left Solomon (Σολομών) the central figure is King David with the traditional Greek symbols (ΑΔΑ) and Asa of Judah (Ασασ) is to our right of King David. From the second row to the left, the first figure is Rehoboam (Ροβοάμ), he is seated next to Abijah of Judah (Αβιασ), across from the two figures are Jehoshaphat (Ἰωσαφάτ) and Jehoram of Judah (Ἰωράμ). The next row below features two figures, on the left Uzziah (Ὀζίας) is seated across from Hezekiah (Εζεκίας) to our right. The next four figures below to our left are Ahaz (Ἄχαζ) next to Jotham (Ιωαθαμ), across from them to the right are Manasseh of Judah (Μανασσῆς) next to Amon of Judah (Αμών). At the bottom of the tree at the root is Abraham (Αβραάμ). The central figures are the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. The work also features branches symbolizing the True Vine. The Virgin is in her traditional garb the red tunic and blue mantle. The position of the Madonna and Child is the traditional Our Lady of the Sign also known as Platitera and in Italian Nostra Signora del Segno. Sometimes it is also referred to as the Nikopoios. Only two Kings adorn crowns Solomon and David and Abraham is the root of the tree as seen in other renditions of the Tree of Jesse. The work was signed (ΧΕΙΡ ΒΙΚΤΩΡΟΣ ΑΧΟΔ by the hand of Victor 1674) [5]

Cretan school describes an important school of icon painting, under the umbrella of post-Byzantine art, which flourished while Crete was under Venetian rule during the late Middle Ages, reaching its climax after the fall of Constantinople, becoming the central force in Greek painting during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The Cretan artists developed a particular style of painting under the influence of both Eastern and Western artistic traditions and movements; the most famous product of the school, El Greco, was the most successful of the many artists who tried to build a career in Western Europe, and also the one who left the Byzantine style farthest behind him in his later career.

The Heptanese school of painting succeeded the Cretan school as the leading school of Greek post-Byzantine painting after Crete fell to the Ottomans in 1669. Like the Cretan school, it combined Byzantine traditions with an increasing Western European artistic influence and also saw the first significant depiction of secular subjects. The school was based in the Ionian Islands, which were not part of Ottoman Greece, from the middle of the 17th century until the middle of the 19th century. The center of Greek art migrated urgently to the Ionian Islands but countless Greek artists were influenced by the school including the ones living throughout the Greek communities in the Ottoman Empire and elsewhere in the world.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Emmanuel Tzanes</span> Greek Renaissance painter

Emmanuel Tzanes, also known as BounialisEmmanuel Tzane-Bounialis, Emmanuel Zane, and Emmanuel Tzane, was a Greek Renaissance painter, author, clergyman, and educator. He spent the latter half of his life in Venice, where he was parish priest of the church of San Giorgio dei Greci and a member of the Flanginian School run by the city's Greek Confraternity. Tzanes painted in the style of the Cretan School, influenced by contemporary trends in Venetian painting. His known extant works, over 130 in number, can be found in public foundations, private collections, churches and monasteries in Greece. The most popular of these is The Holy Towel, finished in 1659. Tzanes was a collaborator with Philotheos Skoufos, and brothers with the painter Konstantinos Tzanes and the poet Marinos Tzanes.

Andreas Pavias was a Greek painter and educator, one of the founding fathers of the Cretan School. His works could be found in churches and private collections throughout Italy and Greece, where they influenced countless artists. Seven of these paintings survive today, six bearing Pavias's signature. The most famous of the group is a Crucifixion.

Georgios Klontzas also known as George Klontzas and Zorzi Cloza dito Cristianopullo, was a scholar, painter, and manuscript illuminator. He is one of the most influential artists of the post-Byzantine period. He defined the Cretan Renaissance. His artistic output included icons, miniatures, triptychs and illuminated manuscripts, commissioned by both Catholic and Orthodox patrons. He is known for occupying his icons with countless figures. The technique is extremely complex and unique to Klontzas. Andreas Pavias attempted this technique in the Crucifixion of Jesus. Klontzas's painting All Creation rejoices in thee is his most popular work. Klontzas influenced Theodore Poulakis he created an extremely similar painting called In Thee Rejoiceth. Klontzas's work is strongly influenced by the Venetian school. His triptychs strongly resemble the works of Gentile da Fabriano, namely the Intercession Altarpiece. Klontzas's Last Judgement resembles Michelangelo's Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel. There are very close similarities. There is no indication that Klontzas saw the work but it is a possibility. According to the Institute of Neohellenic Research fifty-four items of his art exist today.

Leo or Leos Moskos was a painter and educator. There were two other painters named Moskos active around the same period, Elias Moskos and Ioannis Moskos, who may have been his relatives. Indeed, Leo is often confused with Elias Moskos. Some of his work was inspired by Georgios Klontzas and Franghias Kavertzas. He traveled all over the Venetian Empire. Records indicate he traveled to Venice, Cephalonia, and Zakynthos His style resembled the Cretan School. He taught famous painter Panagiotis Doxaras. His most popular work is the Last Judgment. His paintings can be found all over the world. Twenty of his paintings have survived.

Ioannis Tzen also known as Ioannis Dzenos, was a 17th-century Greek baroque painter. He was active on the Ionian islands and a prominent member of the local school. He also represented Crete towards the end of the Cretan School. His painting style reflects an affiliation with Emmanuel Tzanes. He was active on the island Corfu. Greek painters affiliated with the same island active during the same period were Theodore Poulakis, Stephanos Tzangarolas. Fifteen of his works have survived. His most notable work is a painting of the Virgin and Child.

Mary Magdalene is a tempera painting by Konstantinos Tzanes. Tzanes was a Greek painter active during the late Cretan Renaissance. Tzanes and his brothers migrated from Crete to Venice. His brother was famous painter Emmanuel Tzanes. They were both active during the 17th century. Twenty-one of his paintings survived. Both brothers uniquely contributed to the maniera greca. They made drastic improvements to the style redefining space and color. Their work is comparable to Michael Damaskinos.

Ioannis was a member of the Late Cretan School. He was active from 1650 to 1721. Forty-four of his paintings survived.

He was originally from Rethimno, Crete. He traveled all over the Venetian empire. He worked on the Ionian islands of Cephalonia and Zakynthos. He also worked in Venice. Two other painters with the same last name were active during the same period. They were Elias Moskos and Ioannis Moskos. All three artists painted in the same style. Leos was in Venice around the same period as Ioannis. There is strong evidence that the three were related. Famous Greek painter and historian Panagiotis Doxaras was Leo’s student.

The Miracle of the Holy Belt was completed by Theodore Poulakis. He was a Greek painter originally from the village of Chania, Crete. He was associated with the Cretan School. He eventually migrated to the Ionian Islands. He was a member of the Heptanese School. He settled on the island of Corfu. He was a famous teacher. He signed a six-year contract to teach painting to Marinos Damistras son Tzorzi. The contract stipulated that his student had to follow him to Venice. Poulakis frequently traveled all over the Venetian Empire. During one period of his life, he stayed in Venice for over 13 years. He was very active within the painting community. He was also involved with the prestigious quarantia council. One hundred thirty of his work survived. The Girdle of Thomas also referred to as the miracle of the holy belt is a sacred relic located at Prato Cathedral in Tuscany, Italy.

Lamentation of Christ is an oil painting created by Greek painter Nikolaos Kantounis. He was a painter and teacher. He was a priest. His teachers were famous painters Ioannis Korais and Nikolaos Koutouzis He was a representative of the Heptanese School. His artwork was created during the Neoclassical and Romantic periods in Greek art. He was active on the island of Zakynthos from 1782–1834. He was one of the earliest members of the modern Greek art period. Over 164 of his paintings have survived. He is known for painting many portraits. He was a member of the secret organization for Greek Independence called the Filiki Eteria. Towards the end of his life he was honored with the rank of Grand Sakellarios.

His two brothers Marinos Tzanes and Konstantinos Tzanes were also famous painters but Marinos is more well known for his famous poem The Cretan War Ο Κρητικός Πόλεμος. All three artists were members of the Late Cretan School and early Heptanese School (painting) they were known for participating in the movement that integrated Flemish engravings into the Greek and Italian art world.

Tzanes eventually settled in Venice and was a priest at San Giorgio dei Greci where he completed a large number of his works. By that time Flemish Engravings heavily influenced Greek painters within the Venetian Empire. Tzanes belongs to the Late Cretan School and Heptanese School of painting.
