Tunku Abdul Majid Idris Ismail Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar [3] [4] [5] (born 20 July 1970) [6] is a member of the Johor royal family and the Tunku Aris Bendahara of Johor. Tunku Majid has served in honorary positions in national sports associations, including as President of the Malaysian Golf Association [7] and as Deputy President of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation. [8] An incident in 1992 in which Tunku Majid assaulted a hockey player led to the ending of legal immunity for Malaysia's nobility. [9]
He is the half-brother of the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail.
Tunku Majid was born on 20 July 1970 at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru as the second son of Sultan Iskandar by his second wife Sultanah Zanariah. In his youth, he began his early education at Temenggong Abdul Rahman Primary School and then continued his secondary education at English College Johore Bahru. Subsequently, he pursued his higher education in Business Management at MENLO College, Palo Alto in San Francisco, United States. Tunku Majid also took part in international sports tournaments in the 1980s as a youth, particularly windsurfing, hockey and golf. [6] In 1989, after his uncle, Tunku Abdul Rahman passed, the incumbent Tunku Bendahara of Johor, Tunku Majid was appointed by his father to succeed Tunku Abdul Rahman on 23 September 1992. [10]
On 13 January 2006, Tunku Majid married Tunku Teh Mazni binti Tunku Yusuf, a member of Kedah and Kelantan royal family. Tunku Teh's father, Tunku Yusuf is the son of Tunku Temenggong of Kedah, Tunku Muhammad Jewa ibni Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah and her mother, Tengku Embong Suria is the daughter of Tengku Sri Pekerma Raja of Kelantan, Tengku Abdul Majid bin Tengku Besar Tuan Yusuf. [11] They have two sons, Tunku Mahmood Iskandar, whom Tunku Majid named after his father, Sultan Mahmood Iskandar and second son, Tunku Abdul Mateen Idris Ismail Ibrahim Iskandar, and a daughter named Tunku Aisha Menjalara Iskandar. Tunku Majid held the honorary positions of President of the Malaysian Golf Association [13] and Deputy President of the Malaysian Hockey Confederation. [14] In 2008, he proposed the formation of the ASEAN Golf Foundation. Presidents of the golf clubs of the ASEAN countries will take turns to serve as its secretary general. [15] In addition, he was also noted for his contributions to the development of the Malaysian hockey and golf teams. [8] [16] [17] In late 2008, an internal crisis in the administration of these sports associations resulted in Tunku Majid being relieved of his positions. [18]
In 1992, Tunku Majid assaulted a hockey player, which culminated in the Malaysia nobility losing immunity from legal prosecution. On 10 July 1992, Tunku Majid assaulted Mohamed Jaafar Selvaraja Mohamed Vello, the goalkeeper of Perak hockey club, after Perak won the match against Tunku Majid's team. [9] [19] [20] [21] Jaafar lodged a police report. Following press reports on the incident, [22] and the Malaysian Hockey Federation banned Tunku Majid from participating in national hockey tournaments for five years. [23]
Sultan Iskandar, apparently infuriated by the decision, issued an edict to pressure the Johor education department to enforce a boycott of Johor hockey teams participation in national hockey tournaments. Hockey coaches criticised his decision. Sultan Iskandar, taking Gomez' remarks in offence, [24] ordered Gomez to meet him in November 1992 at Istana Bukit Serene, where he reprimanded and assaulted Gomez. The incident sparked off a standoff between the Malaysian government and members of the royalty after the government proposed changes to review the status of the legal immunity of the rulers. [25]
Tunku Majid went on trial for voluntarily causing hurt, and pleaded not guilty. [26] Court sessions into January 1993 convicted him of deliberately causing hurt and hence made him liable to a jail term and/or a fine, though neither penalties were applied [27] following an official pardon issued by his father. [28]
In November 2008, accusations by the Malaysian Golf Association was brought by its members against Tunku Majid for excessive and unethical use of the association's funds. A committee member, Abdul Majid Md Yusoff–an elected committee member who issued the notice of the EGM, in which Tunku Majid responded strongly to his claims. [29] Shortly before an Extraordinary General Meeting was held to decide the fate of Tunku Majid, Tunku Majid said that it was unconstitutional to the vires of the rules of the MGA and pledged to continue serving the association until his term expires the following year, but also expressing that he would not seek re-election to be its association's president. He expressed his decision to boycott the meeting, [30] after seeking legal advice from a lawyer. [31]
The delegates voted in favour of impeaching Tunku Majid as his president. A vote of no confidence against Tunku Majid as President was taken–with 129 delegates voting in favour of his impeachment and 33 against. [32] However, questions were about the technical ambiguity questioned the legitimacy of the meeting, whose views were also supported by former President Thomas Lee and vice-President Zain Yusof. [33] Following the delegation, Tunku Majid expressed that he still believed that he was the President of the MGA. Members of the MGA rebutted by citing provisions within its constitution, and refuted Tunku Majid's claims that the EGM was unconstitutional. [34]
In a surprise move, delegates swiftly elected MGA's vice President Robin Loh in Tunku Majid's place, arguing that its legitimacy as provided by the association's constitution. [35]

Sultan Iskandar ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail was Sultan of Johor, succeeding his father Sultan Ismail upon the latter's death in 1981. He previously reigned as the eighth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the constitutional monarch of Malaysia, from 1984 to 1989. Sultan Iskandar's reign lasted for almost 29 years until his own death in 2010.
Tunku Puan Zanariah Iskandar, formerly known as Sultanah Zanariah, was the second wife of the fourth Sultan of modern Johor, Sultan Iskandar from their marriage in 1961 until his death in 2010. She served as Raja Permaisuri Agong between 1984 and 1989.

Sultan Sir Abu Bakar Al-Khalil Ibrahim Shah ibni Almarhum Temenggong Seri Maharaja Tun Daeng Ibrahim Al-Aydrus was the Temenggong of Johor. He was the 1st Sultan of Modern Johor, the 21st Sultan of Johor and the first Maharaja of Johor from the House of Temenggong. He was also informally known as "The Father of Modern Johor", as many historians accredited Johor's development in the 19th century to Abu Bakar's leadership. He initiated policies and provided aids to ethnic Chinese entrepreneurs to stimulate the development of the state's agricultural economy which was founded by Chinese migrants from Southern China in the 1840s. He also took charge of the development of Johor's infrastructure, administrative system, military and civil service, all of which were modelled closely along Western lines.
Bendahara is an administrative position within classical Malay kingdoms comparable to a vizier before the intervention of European powers during the 19th century. A bendahara was appointed by a sultan and was a hereditary post. The bendahara and the sultan shared the same lineage.

Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar is the seventeenth and current King of Malaysia. He is also the fifth Sultan of modern Johor since ascending to the throne following the death of his father, Sultan Iskandar in 2010.
Major General Tunku Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim is a member of the Johor royal family who is the Regent and Crown Prince of Johor as well as the heir apparent to the throne of Johor. He is the eldest son of Sultan Ibrahim and the Permaisuri of Johor Raja Zarith Sofiah. He is also the grandson of both Sultan Iskandar of Johor and Sultan Idris Shah II of Perak.
Tun Muhammad bin Tun Ahmad, better known as Tun Sri Lanang, was the Bendahara of the royal Court of Johor Sultanate who lived between the 16th and 17th centuries. He served under two Sultans of Johor, namely; Sultan Ali Jalla Abdul Jalil Shah II (1570–1597) and Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah III (1597–1615) and also advisers to 3 Acheh sultans namely; Sultan Iskandar Muda, Sultan Iskandar Thani (1636–1641) and Sultana Tajul Alam Safiatuddin Shah (1641–1675). Tunku Abdul Rahman ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ismail was the younger son of Sultan Ismail of Johor as well as the younger brother of Sultan Iskandar of Johor. Tunku Abdul Rahman held the post of Tunku Mahkota for twenty years until shortly before his father's death in 1981. His termination of his post generated considerable controversy for a brief period of time.
The 1993 amendments to the Constitution of Malaysia were passed by the Malaysian parliament with the aim of removing legal immunity of the royalty. The changes, which saw the amendments of Articles 32, 38, 42, 63, 72 and 181 in the Constitution of Malaysia, were implemented in March 1993. The Most Illustrious Royal Family Order of Kedah is the highest dynastic order of the House of Sri Mahawangsa and the second highest chivalric order of the state of Kedah ranking immediately after the State of Kedah Star of Valour.
