Ultimate Care II is the tenth studio album by experimental electronic music duo Matmos, released on February 19, 2016 on Thrill Jockey. [7] [8]

Production

Ultimate Care II consists entirely of sounds produced by the musicians' Whirlpool Ultimate Care II washing machine, recorded in their basement. [7] It features guest contributors Dan Deacon, Jason Willett from Half Japanese, Max Eilbacher and Sam Haberman from Horse Lords, and Duncan Moore from Needle Gun. [7] [8] The album consists of one 38-minute-long track, [8] described in a press release as depicting "an exploded view of the machine, hearing it in normal operation, but also as an object being rubbed and stroked and drummed upon and prodded and sampled and sequenced and processed by the duo”. [8]

Reception

Upon release, "Ultimate Care II" received "Generally Favourable Reviews" from mainstream music critics. It was given a score of 76 by Metacritic. [4]

Matmos is an experimental electronic music duo formed in San Francisco and currently based in Baltimore. M. C. (Martin) Schmidt and Drew Daniel are the core members, but they frequently include other artists on their records and in their performances, including notably J Lesser. Apart from releasing twelve full-length studio albums and numerous collaborative works, Matmos is also well known for their collaboration with Icelandic singer and musician Björk, both on studio recordings and live tours. After being signed to Matador Records for nine years, Matmos signed with Thrill Jockey in 2012. The name Matmos refers to the seething lake of evil slime beneath the city Sogo in the 1968 film Barbarella.

The album maintains a sense of humour in contrast with the serious nature of the audio being sampled. The exception to the medical samples is the song "For Felix ", a piece dedicated to their deceased pet rat Felix, performed entirely on his cage.
