Kota Kinabalu, colloquially referred to as KK, is the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia. It is also the capital of the Kota Kinabalu District as well as the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies to its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is located to its east. Kota Kinabalu has a population of 452,058 according to the 2010 census; when the adjacent Penampang and Tuaran districts are included, the metro area has a combined population of 628,725. The 2020 Census revealed an increase in the municipal population to 500,421, while the wider area including the Penampang and Putatan districts had a population of 731,406.
Dusun is the collective name of an indigenous ethnic group to the Malaysian state of Sabah of North Borneo. Collectively, they form the largest ethnic group in Sabah. The Dusun people have been internationally recognised as indigenous to Borneo since 2004 as per the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

United Borneo Alliance, was formed by Jeffrey Kitingan in 2012 after he launched the Sabah chapter of Sarawak-based State Reform Party (STAR). Jeffrey also had earlier set-up the preceding United Borneo Front (UBF), the formation of an alliance comprising the State Reform Party (STAR), United Sabah National Organisation (USNO), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Sarawak National Party (SNAP). The Borneo-based parties from Sabah and Sarawak, which would promote a system similar to the "One country, two systems" in China, intend on using the platform to educate the people of Sabah and Sarawak in order to bring about a better quality of life.

Datuk Jimmy Wong Sze Phin is a Malaysian politician who served as the State Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister of Sabah in the Heritage Party (WARISAN) administration under former Chief Minister Shafie Apdal from May 2018 to the collapse of the WARISAN administration in September 2020 and Member of the Sabah State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Sri Tanjong also from May 2018 to September 2020. He also served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kota Kinabalu from May 2013 to May 2018. He is an independent and was a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a component party of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and formerly Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalitions. He served as the State Chairman of DAP of Sabah from 2010 to November 2015 and Member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of DAP. He is also the father of Sri Tanjong MLA Justin Wong Yung Bin who defended the state seat on behalf of him in the 2020 state election.

Samantha James of Kuala Lumpur of was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Kiran Jassal of Selangor at the end of the event. She then represented Malaysia at the Miss Universe 2017 pageant in Las Vegas, United States.
Homeland Solidarity Party is a Sabah-based political party. The party was founded on 1 July 2016 by Joseph Pairin Kitingan's brother Jeffrey. STAR Party was one of four founding parties of the United Sabah Alliance (USA) founded in 2016, United Alliance of Sabah (UAOS) founded in 2018, and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) founded in 2020, the other being the Sabah People's Ideas Party (GAGASAN), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and United Sabah Party (PBS).

Miss Grand Sabah is a Malaysian state-level beauty pageant which selects representatives from Sabah for the Miss Grand Malaysia national competition, founded in 2017 by a Kota Kinabalu-based event organizer, Severinus Alexius Nain.
