The School of Education [3] is one of the academic units at the University of California, Irvine. Historically, it has been ranked as one of the top schools of education in the United States and world.
The University of California, Irvine School of Education was established as an independent school at UCI by the Regents of the University of California in 2012. [4] [5] [6] The school began as the Office of Teacher Education in 1967 [5] [7] and became the Department of Education in 1991. [8] In January 2022, Frances Contreras began her tenure as dean of the School. [9] She is proceeded by Richard Arum [10] and founding School of Education dean Deborah Lowe Vandell. [11]
The School's interdisciplinary faculty includes psychologists, sociologists, economists, and linguists. [12] Four professors are members of the National Academy of Education. [13] One professor is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, [14] and one professor is a fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. [15] In total, the School has 28 senate faculty, 48 clinical faculty and lecturers, 28 professional and support staff, and 17 other affiliated faculty. [16]
The School offers graduate, credential, and undergraduate programs. [8] The school offers a Ph.D. in Education for students looking for careers in educational research. [17] The school also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching with teaching credentials. [18] The school has an undergraduate program in Education Sciences. [19]
In 2022, the U.S. News & World Report ranked the UCI School of Education 10th among graduate schools of education and fourth among public schools of education. [20] The National Council on Teacher Quality/U.S. News & World Report ranked the School of Education's Cal Teach Math & Science Teacher Education Program as number one in California, number one in the Western Region, and number eight in the nation for quality of teacher preparation. [21] Relative to other Schools of Education, the School ranks in the top 1% in the number of faculty members with grants, the top 1% in number of faculty articles published in peer reviewed journals and the top 1% in number of faculty articles cited. Erwin Chemerinsky is an American legal scholar known for his studies of constitutional law and federal civil procedure. Since 2017, Chemerinsky has been the dean of the UC Berkeley School of Law. Previously, he was the inaugural dean of the University of California, Irvine School of Law from 2008 to 2017.

Mark George Yudof is an American law professor and academic administrator. He is a former president of the University of California (2008-2013), former chancellor of the University of Texas System (2002–2008), and former president of the University of Minnesota (1997–2002).

Michael Vincent Drake is an American university administrator and physician who is the 21st president of the University of California. Earlier, from 2014 to June 2020, he was the 15th president of Ohio State University. He was the chancellor of the University of California, Irvine from 2005 to 2014, and has also served as vice president for health affairs for the University of California system. He is the first African American to head the University of California.

Established when the campus opened in 1965, the school consists of five departments, each of which is involved in academic research in its specific field, as well as several interdisciplinary fields. Deborah Lowe Vandell is a developmental psychologist and an expert on the impact of early child care on children's developmental trajectories and the benefits of children's participation in afterschool programs and other organized activities. She is the Founding Dean of the University of California, Irvine School of Education and Chancellor Professor of Education and Psychology.
Nicolaos Georgiou Alexopoulos is a Greek electrical engineer, former professor and university dean, and a champion of education and research. He currently serves as the Vice President for Academic Programs and University Relations at the Broadcom Foundation, and previously was Vice President for Antennas, RF Technologies, and University Relations at Broadcom Corporation from 2008 to 2015. In 2005, he received an honorary doctorate degree from the National Technical University of Athens "for contributions to education and research in engineering electrodynamics and for his public lectures on the 'Genesis and Destruction of the First Research University: The Museum/Library of Alexandria."
Nancy G. Guerra is an American psychologist. On June 1, 2016, Guerra was appointed the dean of the School of Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine.
Enrique Jose Lavernia is a Cuban-American material scientist and engineer. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Irvine's Henry Samueli School of Engineering. From 2015 to 2021, he served as UC Irvine's provost and executive vice chancellor. Lavernia previously taught at the University of California, Davis, where he served as Dean of the College of Engineering and as the university's interim provost and executive vice chancellor.
