The School of Social Sciences is an academic unit of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) that studies the social sciences. The School is the largest academic unit in the university with an enrollment of over 5,300 students. More than a third of the bachelor's degrees conferred at UCI are from the School of Social Sciences. It is home to the departments of Anthropology, Chicano-Latino Studies, Cognitive Science, Economics, Logic and Philosophy of Science, Political Science, International Studies, and Sociology.

UC Irvine's School of Social Sciences is also home to several research and educational entities including the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences (IMBS, headed by Donald G. Saari), the Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies (GPACS), the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, and the Center for the Study of Democracy (headed by Bernard Grofman).

History

The School of Social Sciences was founded in 1965. [1]

The Social Science Tower at UCI was featured in the film Conquest of the Planet of the Apes in 1972. [1]

Undergraduate studies

The school offers 11 undergraduate majors in 7 different departments, each providing a Bachelor of Arts degree. Departments within the Social of Social Sciences include Anthropology, Chicano/Latino Studies, Cognitive Sciences, Economics, Logic and Philosophy of Science (Philosophy), Political Science, and Sociology. Majors that are offered are Anthropology, Business Economics, Chicano/Latino Studies, Cognitive Sciences, Demographic and Social Analysis, Economics, International Studies, Mathematical Behavioral Sciences, Philosophy, Political Science, Quantitative Economics, Social Policy and Public Services, Social Science, and Sociology.

Graduate studies

Robert Duncan Luce was an American mathematician and social scientist, and one of the most preeminent figures in the field of mathematical psychology. At the end of his life, he held the position of Distinguished Research Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of California, Irvine.

The College of Letters and Science (L&S) is the largest of the 14 colleges at the University of California, Berkeley and encompasses the liberal arts. The college was established in its present state in 1915 with the merger of the College of Letters, the College of Social Science, and the College of Natural Science. As of the 2013–14 academic year, there were about 19,000 undergraduates and 2,763 graduate students enrolled in the college. The College of Letters and Science awards only Bachelor of Arts degrees at the undergraduate level, in contrast to the other schools and colleges of UC Berkeley which award only Bachelor of Science degrees at the undergraduate level.

The Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts & Sciences is one of nine academic divisions of the Johns Hopkins University at the university’s Homewood campus in Baltimore. It is the core institution of Johns Hopkins, offering comprehensive undergraduate education and graduate training in the humanities, natural and social sciences.

The Texas Tech University College of Arts & Sciences was founded in 1925 as one of Texas Tech University's four original colleges. UCLA College of Letters and Science College of the University of California, Los Angeles

The UCLA College of Letters and Science is the arts and sciences college of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). It encompasses the Life and Physical Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Honors Program and other programs for both undergraduate and graduate students. It is often called UCLA College or the College, which is not ambiguous because the College is the only educational unit at UCLA to be currently denominated as a "college." University of California, Irvine School of Humanities

The School of Humanities is one of the academic units of the University of California, Irvine. Upon the school's opening in 1965, the Division of Humanities was one of the five liberal arts divisions that the campus had to offer. Samuel McCulloch was appointed as UC Irvine's founding dean of Humanities 1963. The School hosts the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and the University of California Humanities Research Institute.

School of Social Ecology

The School of Social Ecology (SSE) is a school of the University of California, Irvine (UCI) that studies social ecology. As of 2015, the School enrolls nearly 3,000 students and is the third largest school at UCI by student population. Students in the social ecology program at UCI undergo a multidisciplinary program that examines real-world social and environmental issues and that involves the students in off-campus internships as well as on-campus courses. SSE offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, including bachelor's, professional master's, and Ph.D.s.

Duran Bell, Jr. is Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of California, Irvine. He was formerly a professor there in two departments, Economics and Anthropology.

The social sciences are the sciences concerned with societies, human behaviour, and social relationships.

The College of Letters and Science is the largest college at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The College, which offers 80 majors and 38 minors to over 17,000 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students, has about 700 faculty members.

Vicki Lynn Ruiz is an American historian who has written or edited 14 books and published over 60 essays. Her work focuses on Mexican-American women in the twentieth century. She is a recipient of the National Humanities Medal.

Barbara Dosher is an American scientist and academic specializing in neurology of human memory and attention processes. She is the former dean of the School of Social Sciences and a Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Sciences at University of California, Irvine. She is also the director of the Memory Attention Perception Lab at UC Irvine. Dosher is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Dosher received the 2018 Atkinson Prize in Psychological and Cognitive Sciences.
