The University of Cape TownGraduate School of Business (UCT-GSB) operates as the business school affiliated with the University of Cape Town (UCT) with programs including the Masters in Business Administration (MBA), Executive MBA, and Postgraduate Diploma in Management Practice (PgDip). Executive education at the school provides short courses for professional development including customized programs for corporate clients.
The UCT Graduate School of Business is one of the country's oldest business schools, having been founded in 1964 on the main campus of the University of Cape Town in Rondebosch, Cape Town.
The UCT-GSB has been based at the Breakwater Campus on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, close to Cape Town's core business district, since 1991. The campus, which was once a jail, gets its name from the convicts who erected the Cape Town port breakwater in 1861.[ citation needed ] Many of the historical characteristics, such as former prison cells converted into offices and conference spaces, are incorporated into the campus' architecture and interior design.
QS Global 200 Business Schools Report: The report, which rates schools from around the world based on MBA employers’ and recruiters’ views, rated the UCT-GSB in first place for Africa and the Middle East region. [1]
AMBA: [2] The UCT-GSB has received AMBA [3] accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA). AMBA is the international impartial authority on postgraduate MBA education, and the accreditation is considered the global benchmark for MBA, DBA, and MBM programmes.
EQUIS: [4] The UCT-GSB has been awarded accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). This means that the UCT-GSB has a three-year European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation. [5] EQUIS is an international system of quality assessment, improvement, and accreditation of higher education institutions in management and business administration. The UCT-GSB is one of two African business schools to have received an EQUIS accreditation.
AABS: The UCT-GSB is one of six South African business schools to belong to the Association of African Business Schools (AABS) – an organization that aims to promote excellence in business and management education on the continent by supporting business schools through capacity building, collaboration, and quality improvement. AACSB: [7] provides internationally recognized, specialized accreditation for business and accounting programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level. With this addition to their accreditations, UCT-GSB is the 59th school worldwide to gain "Triple Crown" status.
Financial Times: The UCT-GSB MBA programme is the only African MBA programme to be placed on the Financial Times Global Top 100 MBA Rankings. [8] In 2013, the School was placed at 74. The school's MBA is ranked the second best-value-for-money MBA in the world. [9]
Youth Inc: The GSB was ranked 44th in the Youth Inc Global Business School Ranking 2012 Top 100 MBAs, the only African business school to feature. [10]
Which MBA?: The UCT-GSB was ranked 59 in The Economist's list of Executive MBA programmes 2013, the only African business school to make it into the EMBA ranking. [11]
Bertha Centre In 2012 the Bertha Centre started the Social Innovation Lab, a stream on the MBA programme to promote the social purpose of business in the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership The UCT-GSB in association with the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation [12] established a Centre in Values-based Leadership at the GSB that is committed to exploring new ways of doing business based on purpose, sustainability and responsible practices. The center is the first of its kind in South Africa and it seeks to raise issues of sustainability and values-based leadership to priority status in the country and beyond. It has been established through sponsorship from Allan WB Gray, founder of Allan Gray Limited and the co-founder of Allan Gray Orbis Foundation.
Centre for Coaching The Centre for Coaching [13] has initiated a partnership with New Ventures West and The Weathervane to develop courses with international accreditation and practices. Coaching to Excellence, Associate Coaching and Professional Coaching are the most prominent courses offered by the center.
Managing Infrastructure Reform and Regulation The Management Programme in Infrastructure Reform and Regulation (MIR) aims to build capacity to manage reform and regulation of infrastructure sectors throughout Africa and in other emerging economies. MIR works in support of sustainable development and is currently focusing on the electricity and water sectors. The centre conducts research, offers short courses, and provides professional support and policy advocacy.
The UCT-GSB has 41 resident faculty members. [14] Many are internationally acclaimed [15] as researchers and teachers. Others are involved in national and regional issues as well as in policy formulation and implementation. The School's core faculty is supplemented by international visiting academics and executives.
The School has identified five interdisciplinary themes around which it seeks to focus its research. These are:

The UCT-GSB MBA is one of the oldest management programmes in South Africa.
At 11 months, the full-time UCT MBA programme is one of the shortest around and it is known for its intensity.[ citation needed ] The programme is also available in a modular format to accommodate students who wish to continue working while they pursue their studies.
Executive MBA
The Executive MBA is not a modular version of the MBA programme. Although the academic qualification is the same, the process of learning and content are different.
The Executive MBA is the only programme in South Africa that is targeted at senior and executive managers and leaders.
Associate in Management(AIM)
AIM was launched in 1991 in order to fast-track working black South Africans who, because of the history of apartheid, lacked the formal qualifications they needed to climb the corporate ladder. Although taught at a postgraduate level, the programme does not require applicants to have an undergraduate degree or even a matric certificate, and recognises work experience and aptitude as prior learning.
Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PDBA)
The PDBA is a management development programme at pre-masters level and can act as a bridging course for students who may not meet the entrance requirements of the MBA programme.
Masters in Development Finance
The UCT-GSB, in partnership with Africa growth Institute (AGI), is offering an MPhil (Development Finance) which aims to enable students to meet the development needs of the continent.
Masters of Philosophy Specialising in Inclusive Innovation
The MPHIL programme is an interdisciplinary, research-based degree that leads students to develop novel and sustainable solutions for social challenges.
PHD Programme
The UCT-GSB runs a comprehensive PhD programme to encourage original research at the business school that fits the school's research agenda.
Executive Education
The department offers a range of short courses that are open to public enrolment. The selection of specialist short courses cover a spectrum of interests, ranging from general management issues to those that are industry-specific, such as electricity regulation.
Customised Education
The UCT-GSB also offers programmes that are customised for corporates, government, NGOs and SETAs. Programmes are modular and accredited national qualifications can be customised to suit a client's specific needs.
Corporations with which Executive Education continues to work vary in size, sector, focus and challenge. Examples of those it has worked with include Metropolitan Holdings, ABSA, BHP Billiton, Nestle SA, Johnson & Johnson, South African Breweries, and Standard Bank.
UCT-GSB Solution Space
The Solution Space is for early-stage start-ups and a research and development platform for corporates. The Solution Space was founded in 2014 at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business. The university's Vice Chancellors Strategic Award provided initial capital, and founding partner, the MTN Group, provided significant support from 2015.
The Association of MBAs (AMBA) is a global organisation founded in 1967 which focuses primarily on international business school accreditation and membership.
Nyenrode Business Universiteit is a Dutch business university and the only private higher education institution that has the university status in the Netherlands. Founded in 1946, it is located on a large estate in the town of Breukelen, between Amsterdam and Utrecht. The educational institution is named after the castle where the course is located: Nijenrode Castle. Nyenrode was founded under the name of the Netherlands Training Institute for Abroad by renowned private Dutch companies, including KLM, Shell, Unilever, Philips, and AkzoNobel, with the objective 'For Business, By Business'. The establishment was the result of an idea from KLM director Albert Plesman.
Warwick Business School (WBS) is the business school of the University of Warwick and an academic department within the Faculty of Social Sciences. It was established in 1967 as the School of Industrial and Business Studies. The business school offers undergraduate, and postgraduate degree programs, and non-degree executive education for individuals and companies.
The Indian School of Business (ISB) is a private business school established in India in 2001. It has two parallel campuses in India, in Hyderabad (Telangana) and Mohali (Punjab). The QUT Business School is one of six faculties at the Queensland University of Technology. It is home to the QUT Graduate School of Business, as well as four-discipline focused schools; the School of Accountancy, the School of Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations, the School of Economics and Finance, and the School of Management. In 2015, the QUT Business School had enrolled a total of 8,971 students across the faculty, including 2,962 international students.
University of Bradford School of Management is an international business school located in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was established in 1963 and is one of the oldest business schools in the UK, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2023. The school is triple accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS.
EDHEC Business School is a French business school with campus locations in: Lille, France; Nice, France; Paris, France; London, United Kingdom; and Singapore.
Henley Business School, Africa, in the Paulshof suburb of Johannesburg, is a campus of the British-based Henley Business School, one of the oldest business schools in Europe with operations in 17 countries across the globe. The African institution shares international accreditation with its parent and is also locally accredited in South Africa. The South African campus has offered the MBA in South Africa since 1992. In 2002, the South African location became a fully owned subsidiary of the British parent. As the operation in South Africa is the only Henley Business School in the African continent, it has students living in neighbouring countries studying and being supported through this office.
Audencia Business School is a French grande école and business school located in Nantes, France. It is one of the only 0.5% of business schools in the world accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Audencia is also BSIS labelled. The school enrolls 6,100 students from almost 90 countries on bachelors, international masters, specialised masters, MBAs, doctorates and executive education courses.
The University of Bath School of Management in Bath, England, is the international business school of the University of Bath. It was established in 1966.
Durham University Business School (DUBS) is the business faculty of Durham University, located in Durham, England. Established in 1965, it holds triple accreditation from AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. The faculty contains the departments of accounting, economics, finance, and management and marketing, as well as twelve research centres.
Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) is the business school of Lancaster University in Lancaster, England. The school's history can be traced back to the establishment of departments of marketing and of operational research at the university's foundation in 1964. These and other related departments were organised into the "School of Business and Organizational Studies" in 1969. A full range of subjects are taught, ranging from undergraduate degrees to postgraduate degrees, including executive and full-time MBAs, PhDs and post-experience executive education.

The European School of Management and Technology, also known as ESMT Berlin, is a private non-profit business school based in Berlin, Germany. Henley Business School is a business school which is affiliated with the University of Reading. It was formed by merging the previously independent Henley Management College with the existing business school of the University of Reading. As a result of the merger it now occupies two sites: Greenlands Campus, near the town of Henley-on-Thames, the original site of the Henley Management College, and Whiteknights Campus in Reading.

Walter R.J. Baets is a Belgian-born author and academic. and the previous director of the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business. Where he was the Chair of the Association of African Business Schools as well as the Allan Gray Centre for Values-Based Leadership at the UCT GSB. In 2015, the UCT GSB was crowned the top business school on the continent for the eighth year running.
