The University of Santo Tomas System is a network of private schools that belong to the Philippine Dominican Province of the Order of Preachers. [2] The system is composed of its six campuses at Manila, Legazpi, General Santos City, Iloilo City, Santa Rosa, and Quezon City.

The UST System is one of the two educational institution systems of the Dominicans of the Philippine Dominican Province. [2] The other is the Letran System, which has four campuses.

Institutions

The University of Santo Tomas System consists of four existing campuses and one upcoming satellite campuses located in Southern Tagalog. The Manila campus is the main educational institution of the system.

The integration of select Dominican schools was a mandate of the 2012 and 2016 Provincial Chapters of the Philippine Dominican Province. In the 2012 Acts, the integration was planned to facilitate the coordination of the apostolic priorities and sharing of resources of several institutions. [3] In December 2014, the Aquinas University of Legazpi in Albay (AUL), Angelicum College in Quezon City, and Angelicum School Iloilo, signed a memorandum of intent to integrate with UST Manila. [4] The future UST campuses in General Santos and Santa Rosa, Laguna, will also be part of the system. The integration plan was reinforced in the 2016 Acts. [3]

The two existing constituent units are independent campuses. [5] Each campus is headed by a rector. The Rector Magnificus of UST Manila is also the rector of UST Angelicum. [6] Its board of trustees is composed of 12 representatives from UST Manila and three from UST Angelicum. [7] [3] Angelicum College's signature non-graded system of education is retained.

UST-Legazpi has fiscal and administrative independence from the main campus. The rector and board of trustees are also different. [8] [9] The integration of AUL also entailed the renaming of its university hospital to UST-Legazpi Hospital. [10]

In December 2020, the construction of the UST-Dr. Tony Tan Caktiong Innovation Center began in UST Santa Rosa. It is the first building in the campus. [11]

Founded in January 1928 by a group of students led by Jose Villa Panganiban, it is one of the first student newspapers in the Philippines. It is published fortnightly. The lampoon issue is called The Vuisitarian. Tomas U. Santos, the mascot of The Varsitarian, is a Thomasian who represents the students of the campus. He is usually seen accompanied by a talking, and quite cynical, T-square.

The University of Santo Tomas is one of the oldest existing universities and holds the oldest extant university charter in the Philippines and in Asia. It was founded on April 28, 1611, by the third Archbishop of Manila, Miguel de Benavides, together with Domingo de Nieva and Bernardo de Santa Catalina. It was originally conceived as a school to prepare young men for the priesthood. Located Intramuros, it was first called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario and later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomás in memory of Dominican theologian Saint Thomas Aquinas. In 1624, the colegio was authorized to confer academic degrees in theology, philosophy, and arts. On November 20, 1645, after representations by Vittorio Riccio, Pope Innocent X elevated the college to the rank of a university and in 1680 it was placed under royal patronage.

The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas (UST) Quadricentennial Celebration took place from December 18, 2009 to January 27, 2012. The agenda before the quadricentennial year in 2011 included the introduction of new academic programs, improvements in the university's infrastructure, and other projects to raise UST's national and international prominence and promote its role as a social catalyst.

Angelicum School Iloilo is a private, Catholic school run by the Philippine Dominican Province of the Order of Preachers in Jaro, Iloilo City, Philippines. It is one of the three Angelicum Schools established by Fr. Rogelio B. Alarcon, O.P. in the 1970s that pioneered in a non-graded, open-classroom education system in the Philippines. The school is also known for the Lizares Mansion, former heritage house turned school building which stands in the school's campus. It is one of Iloilo's imposing landmarks. The new campus is envisioned to intensify the research activities of UST Manila by becoming a technological and innovative hub in Laguna.
