The University of Washington School of Social Work is the social work school of the University of Washington, a public research university in Seattle, Washington. [2]

The School offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degree programs in social work with an enrollment of more than 600 students. The School is located in the University District neighborhood of Seattle, Washington adjacent to the main University of Washington campus. [3] Beginning in the early 1900s, the School developed from a single course to an independent department accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. [4] Today, the School is ranked as one of the United States' best graduate programs in social work by the U.S. News & World Report. [5]

History

1900s

In 1918, the University used Red Cross funding to establish a social casework course in the Department of Sociology in order to train caseworkers to provide services to families of servicemen returning from World War I. This represented the first formal social work training in the state of Washington. [6] [7]

1930s

At the height of the Great Depression in 1934, UW established the graduate program at the School with funding from the Washington State Emergency Relief Association in response to the need for public agency social workers and administrators in the region. [8] The School's graduate program became independent in 1934 under the direction of Arlien Johnson [9] and was formally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education during the same year. [10] Ernest Witte becomes the school's director in 1939, adopting a two-year masters program, and expanding the curriculum and fieldwork opportunities. [7]

The School gained independent status as a professional school in 1958. [11] The undergraduate program was established in 1959 [12] and formally accredited by the Council on Social Work Education in 1975. [13] The School officially added a doctoral program in 1975 and a three-year evening master's degree program in the 1980s. [14]

In 2016, the U.S. News & World Report ranked the School third among the United States' nearly 220 schools with master of social work degree programs. [15]

Research

Current research centers include the Social Development Research Group, [16] the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute, [17] and Partners for Our Children. [18]

Partnerships

Since 2006, the School of Social Work has partnered with the Royal University of Phnom Penh in Cambodia to develop social work curriculum and train social work professionals to address pressing societal problems, following years of civil discord. [19]

Education in Seattle is an important part of many Seattleites' lives, particularly due to the high concentration of technology, engineering, and other jobs that require advanced degrees. Of the city's population over the age of 25, 53.8 percent hold a bachelor's degree or higher; 91.9 percent have a high school diploma or equivalent. In fact, the United States Census Bureau surveys indicate that Seattle has one of the highest rates of college graduates among major U.S. cities. In addition to the obvious institutions of education, there are significant adult literacy programs and considerable homeschooling. Seattle is also the most literate city in the United States, based on a study done by Central Connecticut State University.

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is a nonprofit national association in the United States representing more than 2,500 individual members, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. Founded in 1952, this partnership of educational and professional institutions, social welfare agencies, and private citizens is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States.

The Michael G. Foster School of Business at the University of Washington is the business school of the University of Washington in Seattle. Founded in 1917 as the University of Washington School of Business Administration, the school was the second business school in the western United States.

University of Arkansas Grantham is a public online university based in Little Rock, Arkansas. Founded in 1951 as Grantham Radio License School, it would eventually be renamed Grantham University. The then-for-profit school offered distance-education programs from 1951 until 2021, at which point it was entirely online. Grantham was purchased by the University of Arkansas System for one dollar in 2021, merging with the latter’s eVersity online program. It is composed of four colleges: the College of Business, Management, and Economics; the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology; and the College of Nursing and Health Professions. Benjamin Danielson is a pediatrician and clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Throughout his time as a pediatrician, Danielson has facilitated the creation and development of diversity programs and contributed actively to governmental policy as a member of several health boards. Danielson was the medical director of the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic from 1999 to 2020, where he then resigned and spoke out about prevalent institutional racism and a resistance to change from hospital leaders. In September 2021, it was announced that Danielson would be directing a new program, Allies in Healthier Systems for Health & Abundance in Youth (AHSHAY) to help address and prevent youth incarceration.
