Urban Flora is the debut collaborative extended play by American singer Alina Baraz and Danish Musician Galimatias. It was released on May 19,2015,by Ultra Records,with a vinyl release by Mom + Pop in 2016. [3]
Urban Flora began in 2013 when Baraz and Galimatias connected through SoundCloud. [4] [5] At the time,Baraz was creating and sharing her own tracks by recording vocals over beats she found online and uploading them to the platform. [6] Galimatias discovered one of her songs,and the two began collaborating remotely,exchanging music and ideas through Facebook without ever meeting in person or video chatting. [6]
The title Urban Flora originated from one of their tracks,which Galimatias had temporarily renamed before sending it to Baraz. [6] The name resonated with her and became the title of the EP. [6] Baraz explained that the name symbolizes their partnership,with "Urban" representing Galimatias' production style and "Flora" reflecting her conceptual contributions. [6]
Urban Flora combines downtempo electronic production with R&B influences. [5] Alina Baraz's vocals have been described as delicate and emotive,while Galimatias' production is characterized by textured and detailed soundscapes. [5] Paul Lester of The Guardian noted that the extended play balances a dreamlike quality with themes of desire and infatuation,moving beyond surface-level sentiments to explore possession and obsession. The opening track,"Show Me",introduces the extended play with Alina Baraz's sensual vocals and Galimatias' lush production,setting a tone of intimacy and allure. The song became her first hit,peaking number 36 on the US Dance/Electronic Digital Songs. The album's third single,"Make You Feel",was released on January 30,2015. Urban Flora received generally positive reviews from music critics. Andy Kellman of AllMusic called the album "consistently relaxed and slightly trippy,nearly torpid,filled with lapping sounds carefully plotted for solitary and one-on-one bedroom settings." [3] Complex 's Edwin Ortiz praised the EP,saying,"Alina's sensual vocals and Galimatias' equally ravishing backdrops are a perfect marriage on Urban Flora,which effectively sounds and feels like a dedication to the one in your life." Helen Folasade Adu, known professionally as Sade Adu or simply Sade, is a Nigerian-British singer, known as the lead vocalist of her band Sade. One of the most successful British female artists in history, she is often recognised as an influence on contemporary music. Her success in the music industry was recognised with the honour Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2002, and she was made Commander in the 2017 Birthday Honours.
Sade are an English band, formed in London in 1982 and named after their lead singer, Sade Adu. The band consists of Adu alongside bassist Paul Denman, saxophonist and guitarist Stuart Matthewman, and keyboardist Andrew Hale. Founding drummer Paul Anthony Cooke left the band in 1984, while Dave Early, Cooke's replacement, left in 1985. Since Early's departure in 1985, the band has employed numerous session and touring drummers in absence of an official drummer. The band's music features elements of soul, quiet storm, smooth jazz and sophisti-pop. All of the band's albums, including compilations and a live album, have charted in the US Top Ten.
Diamond Life is the debut studio album by English band Sade, released in the United Kingdom on 16 July 1984 by Epic Records and in the United States on 27 February 1985 by Portrait Records. After studying fashion design, and later modelling, Sade Adu began backup-singing with British band Pride. During this time Adu and three of the original members of "Pride"—Paul Anthony Cook, Paul Denman and Stuart Matthewman—left the group to form their own band called Sade. After various demos and performances, Sade received interest from record labels and signed to Epic.
Promise is the second studio album by English band Sade, released in the United Kingdom on 4 November 1985 by Epic Records and in the United States on 15 November 1985 by Portrait Records. Recording for the album began in February and lasted until August 1985. The band co-produced the album with the same team of producers they worked with on their debut album, Diamond Life, including Robin Millar, Mike Pela and Ben Rogan. Soldier of Love is the sixth studio album by English band Sade, released on 5 February 2010 by Epic Records. Following the release of Lovers Rock (2000), the band went into a 10-year hiatus. In 2008, the band regrouped in order to begin work on their sixth album, making it the first time each member had been together. Alina Baraz is an American singer. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, she began her professional musical career in 2013 when she released "Roses Dipped in Gold". In 2015, Baraz and electronic producer Galimatias released a collaborative EP together titled Urban Flora through Ultra Music after discovering each other's work online. The EP was met with positive reception and streaming success. Baraz released her first solo EP, The Color of You, in 2018. In April 2020, Baraz released her debut studio album, It Was Divine.
