There are currently 8 recognized species in this genus:
Johann Jakob von Kaup was a German naturalist. A proponent of natural philosophy, he believed in an innate mathematical order in nature and he attempted biological classifications based on the Quinarian system. Kaup is also known for having coined popular prehistoric taxa like Pterosauria and Machairodus.

Ophichthidae is a family of fish in the order Anguilliformes, commonly known as the snake eels. The term "Ophichthidae" comes from Greek ophis ("serpent") and ichthys ("fish"). Snake eels are also burrowing eels, they are named for their physical appearance, they have long, cylindrical snakelike bodies. This family is found worldwide in tropical to warm temperate waters. They inhabit a wide range of habitats, from coastal shallows and even rivers, to depths of above 800 m (2,600 ft). Most species are bottom dwellers, hiding in mud or sand to capture their prey of crustaceans and small fish, but some are pelagic.
The saddleback toads are a genus of small, colourful toads the family Brachycephalidae in the order Anura. As traditionally defined, the family is often limited to just one genus, Brachycephalus, but it is closely related to Ischnocnema, which therefore is placed in the family in recent treatments. Brachycephalus species are tiny, often yellow frogs that are native to Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. In at least one species, B. ephippium, the bright colours are aposematic, warning potential predators of its toxicity, specifically tetrodotoxin.
The red hake or squirrel hake, Urophycis chuss, is a phycid hake of the genus Urophycis, found in the Atlantic Ocean at depths between 10 and 500 m. It grows to about 30 in (75 cm) and 7 lb (3.2 kg). Red hake are edible, and are sought out by recreational fisherman as a gamefish.
The white hake or mud hake is a phycid hake of the genus Urophycis, found in the deeper waters in the northwest Atlantic Ocean.
Pontinus is a genus of scorpionfishes.
Pimelodus is a genus of fish in the family Pimelodidae native to Central and South America.
Cycloramphus is a genus of frogs in the Cycloramphidae family. The genus is endemic to the southeastern Brazil. They are sometimes known as the button frogs.
Ituglanis is a genus of fish in the family Trichomycteridae native to South America. Their greatest diversity seems to occur in the Amazon River basin. Most species inhabit leaf litter, with several species living in caves.
Physiculus is a genus of morid cods.
Pimelodella is a genus of three-barbeled catfishes.
Halichoeres, commonly called wrasses, are a genus of fish in the family Labridae found in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Ophichthus is a genus of eels in the snake eel family Ophichthidae.
Xenurobrycon is a genus of characins from tropical South America.
Hoplias is a genus of fish in the family Erythrinidae found in Central and South America.
Diplodus is a genus of fish in the family Sparidae, found in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean.
Laemonema is a genus of morid cods.
Strongylura is a genus of needlefishes.
Paralichthys is a genus of large-tooth flounders. Most species are native to the coastal waters of the Americas, but P. olivaceus is from northeast Asia. The largest species reaches about 1.5 m (5 ft) in length.
Lythrypnus is a genus of gobies native to the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas including Cocos Island and the Galapagos Islands.
Urophycis regia is a fish species belonging to the genus Urophycis.
