Vinod Kumar Yadav (born 1 January 1960) is currently working as Director (Transport ),NCC Limited . He is Former Administrator of Delhi Gymkhana Club Limited [1] and Former Chairman &Chief Executive Officer,Railway Board,Indian Railways. [2] [3] [4] He previously served as the General Manager for South Central Railway Zone of Indian Railways and held various other important assignments in the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited,Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited and in the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. He is from Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) –1980 batch. [5]
Vinod Kumar Yadav was born on Jan 1,1960 in Sukarauli Village,in Ballia District of Uttar Pradesh in India. [6]
He received his early education at Ballia,graduated with a bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering) from Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College (now Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology),University of Allahabad in 1980. His academic pursuits include a master's degree in Business Administration –MBA (Technology Management) from La Trobe University,Australia. [4]
Vinod Kumar Yadav began his career on Indian Railways as Assistant Electrical Engineer in February,1982. [5] He held several important executive and managerial positions on Indian Railways and on deputation to various Organizations including as Chairman Railway Board of Indian Railways,General Manager of South Central Railway,a Zone of Indian Railways. Down the line,he also worked as Chief Electrical Engineer,Planning/Traction Distribution,Northern Railway;Divisional Railway Manager,Lucknow Division,North Eastern Railway;Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Operation),Delhi Division,Northern Railway. [3] [5] Group General Manager (Electrical),Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited;Programme Manager,Technology Diffusion and Support Programme and as Project Director,International Centre for Advancement of Manufacturing Technology at United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO);he was also the Director for Department of Industrial Policy &Promotion in Ministry of Industry Government of India. [5] [7] He was Executive Director,Railway Electrification Projects,Rail Vikas Nigam Limited,he also held an important foreign assignment as Deputy Manager (Electrical),IRCON at Turkey. [4]
As General Manager of South Central Railway,he led the Zone to achieve record highest revenue during 2017-18 and 2018-19. [8] Infrastructure Growth also touched peak with highest Kilometres of new rail lines,doubling &tripling and electrification getting completed. Digital transactions and environment friendly measures came to fore on South Central Railway under his initiative. He tied up with Indian School of Business to enable Railways undertake research,knowledge sharing and management training programs for Railway officers. Vinod Yadav was known for his stress on human resource management on Railways on the basis of steps such as job melas for children of Railway families,skill development programs,passport melas,significant hike in sports and welfare infrastructure,medical facilities etc. Vinod Yadav was instrumental in inventing a modern Gangmen Tool Kit,light in weight and easy to carry,changing the way,the safety ambassadors of Indian Railways can work. Vinod Yadav headed World's third largest Rail network and led Indian Railways towards a giant leap in infrastructure development involving over Rs. 160 Lakh Crore of capex fund which brought about the biggest transformation in its working system.
Annapurna trains,Jai Kisan trains etc.,marked his business model for Indian Railways. [14] [15]
Passenger train services also enhanced qualitatively with introduction of “Vande Bharat Express”also known as Train-18,an indigenously built Indian semi-high-speed Intercity Electric Multiple Unit. [16] Introduction of “Tejas Express”- India's first semi-high speed fully air-conditioned train etc. Air-Conditioned local trains were introduced on Mumbai Suburban System. [17]
Thanks to Vinod Yadav's plans,Indian Railways could take center stage in the battle to fight COVID-19 pandemic all over the country by keeping the Rail wheels moving. [18]
India's first university focused on transport-related education,multidisciplinary research and training - National Rail &Transport Institute (NRTI) at Vadodara,India came up under him at the helm. [19]
Digitised data management of Indian Railway workforce made a huge impact,amongst his plans. [20] [21]
Vinod Kumar Yadav undertook International assignment of planning,execution and commissioning of Railway Electrification projects for Turkish Railways and led the team to frame tender and undertake global contract for Over Head Electrification works for Iran Railways. [4]
He played a key role in development of SMEs sector and technology transfer to SMEs,skill development,mobilisation of resources and implementation of six projects worth US$8.65 million. He managed a joint project of United Nations and Government of India for development of Small and Medium enterprises accruing US$6.6.million.
His biggest challenge will be to resurrect the railways financially as the national transporter has been facing severe cash crunch for the past few years.
Vinod Kumar Yadav is the recipient of "Eminent Engineer Award for the Year 2020" from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). [22]
He also received the Eminent Engineer Award for 2019 from the Union Ministry of Skill Development &Entrepreneurship;recognition from President of India for making Indian Railways the best organization for implementing Swacchata Action Plan 2018-2019.. [23] [24]
As the head for South Central Railway,he enabled the Zone stand top on Indian Railways for overall performance efficiency in 2017-18,to receive Pandit Gobind Vallabh Pant Shield. [25]
He also got the Award for Best Transformation Initiatives by the Ministry of Railways in 2017-2018. [26]
Rail transport in India consists of primarily of passenger and freight shipments along an integrated rail network. Indian Railways (IR),a statutory body under the ownership of the Ministry of Railways of the Government of India,operates India's national railway system. It is the primary owner and operator of rail operations throughout the country including suburban rail in major metros.
The London,Brighton and South Coast Railway was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1922. Its territory formed a rough triangle,with London at its apex,practically the whole coastline of Sussex as its base,covering a large part of Surrey. It was bounded on its western side by the London and South Western Railway (L&SWR),which provided an alternative route to Portsmouth. On its eastern side the LB&SCR was bounded by the South Eastern Railway (SER)—later one component of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR)—which provided an alternative route to Bexhill,St Leonards-on-Sea,and Hastings. The LB&SCR had the most direct routes from London to the south coast seaside resorts of Brighton,Eastbourne,Worthing,Littlehampton and Bognor Regis,and to the ports of Newhaven and Shoreham-by-Sea. It served the inland towns and cities of Chichester,Horsham,East Grinstead and Lewes,and jointly served Croydon,Tunbridge Wells,Dorking and Guildford. At the London end was a complicated suburban and outer-suburban network of lines emanating from London Bridge and Victoria,and shared interests in two cross-London lines.
Railway electrification is the use of electric power for the propulsion of rail transport. Electric railways use either electric locomotives,electric multiple units or both. Electricity is typically generated in large and relatively efficient generating stations,transmitted to the railway network and distributed to the trains. Some electric railways have their own dedicated generating stations and transmission lines,but most purchase power from an electric utility. The railway usually provides its own distribution lines,switches,and transformers.

As of August 2024,96.59% of the broad-gauge network is electrified. With more than 1.2 million employees,it is the world's ninth-largest employer and India's second largest employer.
The Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW),formerly Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW),is a production unit of Indian Railways situated in Varanasi,Uttar Pradesh. DLW was renamed BLW in 2020.
The Victorian Railways (VR),trading from 1974 as VicRail,was the state-owned operator of most rail transport in the Australian state of Victoria from 1859 to 1983. The first railways in Victoria were private companies,but when these companies failed or defaulted,the Victorian Railways was established to take over their operations. Most of the lines operated by the Victorian Railways were of 5 ft 3 in. However,the railways also operated up to five 2 ft 6 in narrow gauge lines between 1898 and 1962,and a 4 ft 8+1⁄2 instandard gauge line between Albury and Melbourne from 1961.

The Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineering,abbreviated as IRSME,is one of the group 'A' central engineering services of the Indian railways. The officers of this service are responsible for managing the Mechanical Engineering Division of the Indian Railways. Till 2019,IRSME officers were drawn from the Combined Engineering Service Examination (ESE) and Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission. All appointments to the Group 'A' services are made by the president of India.
The Indian Railway Traffic Service,abbreviated as IRTS is a Prestigious Group 'A' Central Civil Service Cadre of the Government of India. IRTS in its present form was reconstituted in 1967. The IRTS Cadre functions under the Administrative Control of the Ministry of Railways,Government of India. The civil servants under this service are responsible for Operation and Business Development of Indian Railways in the country. On one hand,IRTS officers co-ordinate among various technical departments of the Indian Railways,while on the other hand,they form the public interface of the Indian Railways. Colloquially called Traffic Officers, they are the primary facilitators of Railway services right from Planning of freight movement,Passenger transport,Passenger amenities to Station Management and Infrastructure Planning.
The Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) is the unit of Indian Railways responsible for electrification of the network. The organisation,founded in 1979,is headquartered in Prayagraj,Uttar Pradesh. Project units operate in Ambala,Bangalore,Chennai,Secunderabad,Lucknow,Ahmedabad,Jaipur,Danapur,and New Jalpaiguri.
Secunderabad Junction railway station is an NSG–1 category Indian railway station in Secunderabad railway division of South Central Railway zone. It is the major Railway Junction in the city of Hyderabad,Telangana,India. It is one of the busiest railway stations in South India and one of the most important hubs in the country and a commuter rail hub in the Hyderabad urban area. Built in 1874 by the Nizam of Hyderabad during the British era,it was the main station of Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway until the Kacheguda railway station opened in 1916. The station was taken over by Indian Railways in 1951,when NGSR was nationalised. Its main portico and concourse are influenced by Nizamesque architecture. The station,which resembles a fort,is a tourist attraction in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
Chandrasekhar Bhaskar Bhave is an Indian financial regulator. He was appointed as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in February 2008 for a period of three years. He was succeeded by Upendra Kumar Sinha as the chairman of SEBI after his tenure. He was SEBI's senior executive director from 1992 - 1996. After that he became Chairman and Managing Director of the then newly created National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). He is also member of the governments technology advisory group,TAGUP. He is the chairperson of the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS).
Vijayawada Junction Railway Station is an Indian Railways station in Vijayawada of Andhra Pradesh,categorized as a Non-Suburban Grade-1 (NSG-1) station in Vijayawada railway division. Situated at the junction of Howrah–Chennai and New Delhi–Chennai main lines,it is the fourth busiest railway station in the country after Howrah Junction,Kanpur Central and New Delhi. The station serves about 1.40 lakh passengers,over 190 express and 170 freight trains every day. It is one of the major railway junctions of the Indian Railways and is a nationally important halt. In September,2023 It has been awarded Platinum Rating Certificate for its Environmental projects from IGBC
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor or Western DFC is a 1,506 km long,under-construction 1,676 mm freight corridor in India. It will connect Dadri in Uttar Pradesh with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Navi Mumbai,Raigad District,Maharashtra. The corridor is being built by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL),a public-sector unit (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways and would be electrified with double-line operation. The Western DFC entails a new single-line branch from Prithla in Palwal district to Tughlakabad in Delhi,running parallel to the existing New Delhi–Faridabad–Palwal railway line.
The Barauni–Samastipur section is a railway line connecting Barauni to Samastipur in the Indian state of Bihar. The 50.54 km (31 mi) line passes through the plains of North Bihar and the Gangetic Plain in Bihar.
Ashwani Lohani is a retired 1980 batch officer of Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers. He has earlier worked as the Chairman &Managing Director of Air India and the former Chairman of the Railway Board of Indian Railways. After being retired from Government service he joined GMR Group where he served as Chief executive officer.
The Rajpura–Bathinda line is a railway line connecting Bathinda and Rajpura in the Indian state of Punjab. The line is under the administrative jurisdiction of Northern Railway.
Syamal Bhushan Ghosh Dastidar is an ex-Indian civil servant,former Member Traffic of the Railway Board and Ex-Officio Secretary to the Government of India. In 2009,he was the only person to be awarded the Padma Shri,India's fourth highest civilian award,in the civil service category.
