Vipin Kumar Sharma is an Indian actor, editor and filmmaker. He is best known for his acting roles in Taare Zameen Par , Gangs of Wasseypur , Kick , Paatal Lok and Monkey Man .

Early life

Sharma spent his early childhood in a slum in Delhi. [1] Though he was interested in acting in films from his early days, it was theater that inspired him initially, especially after he happened to listen to Sanjeev Kumar's interview on radio. He joined a small Punjabi theater group to perform various odd jobs in Delhi, e.g. selling tickets or serving tea.[ citation needed ]

He is an alumnus of National School of Drama, New Delhi, India and the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. [2] [3] [4] [5] He graduated from the National School of Drama, India in 2003. [6]

Career

Sharma made his acting debut with Doordarshan's television series Bharat Ek Khoj in 1989, followed by his feature film debut Krishna in 1996, he gained attention for his portrayal of Nandakishore Awasthi in Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par in 2007. He was later nominated for his first ever Screen Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Taare Zameen Par, but eventually lost to his co-star Aamir Khan.

Following the success of Taare Zameen Par, Sharma played the servant Balvant in the horror film 1920 , the title character's landlord in the psychological thriller film Karthik Calling Karthik , Gaindha Singh in the romantic thriller film Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster , Major Masand in the biographical drama film Paan Singh Tomar , Ehsaan Qureshi in the critically acclaimed crime action film Gangs of Wasseypur, and Dilip in the Indian-Australian-American co-production, Hotel Mumbai . Sharma met Dev Patel on the set of Hotel Mumbai and stayed in touch with the film's producer who called him for an audition with Patel for Monkey Man. He played the leader of a hijra community in the film which was released in 2024. [7]

Since 2020, he has starred in the Amazon's series Paatal Lok as DCP Bhagat.

In 2024, Sharma made his Hollywood debut by playing the role of the leader of a Hijra community in the action thriller film Monkey Man.

It explores the life and imagination of Ishaan (Safary), an artistically gifted 8-year-old boy whose poor academic performance leads his parents to send him to a boarding school, where a new art teacher Nikumbh (Khan) suspects that he is dyslexic and helps him to overcome his reading disorder.

<i>Kaatru Veliyidai</i> 2017 film by Mani Ratnam

Kaatru Veliyidai is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language romantic war film, produced, written and directed by Mani Ratnam. Made under the Madras Talkies banner, it features music composed by A. R. Rahman, cinematography by Ravi Varman and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad. The film stars Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari, with Lalitha, Rukmini Vijayakumar, Delhi Ganesh and RJ Balaji and Shraddha Srinath playing other pivotal roles. Set in the backdrop of the Kargil War of 1999, the film narrates the story of an Indian Air Force pilot who recalls his romance with a doctor in the lead up to the war, while being kept as a prisoner of war at a jail in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Kaatru Veliyidai is the soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman, to the 2017 Indian Tamil romance film of the same name, written and directed by Mani Ratnam starring Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari. The soundtrack album consists of six tracks each, in the original Tamil, and in the Telugu version of the album. Four of the tracks for the original version were penned by Vairamuthu, one by his son Madhan Karky, and one by Shellee. The lyrics to the Telugu version were written by Sirivennela Sitaramasastri. The album won Rahman the National Film Award for Best Music Direction in the "Songs" category at the 65th National Film Awards. The choreography for the songs were done by Brinda and the cinematography for the film by Ravi Varman.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is a series of Indian Hindi-language romantic thriller films co-written, co-produced and directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. Its title was inspired by 1962's Bollywood film Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. The film series stars Jimmy Sheirgill as Aditya Pratap Singh (Saheb) and Mahi Gill as Madhavi Deva (Biwi). The first film named Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster was released in 2011 and the second film Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns released in 2013. Both films received critical acclaim and perform moderate success at the box office. The third film Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3 released in 2018 and received poor reviews from critics for its script and weak plotlines and became a disaster at the box office.

<i>Taare Zameen Par</i> (TV series) Indian singing reality show

Taare Zameen Par is an Indian kids singing reality show on StarPlus. It premiered on 2 November 2020 and ended on 30 January 2021. The series was hosted by the child actress Aakriti Sharma and singer Sugandha Mishra with Shankar Mahadevan, Jonita Gandhi and Tony Kakkar as the mentors.
