Pulikkutty Arachchilage Viren Nettasinghe (born 17 June 2003) is a Sri Lankan badminton player. [1] He qualified to represent Sri Lanka at the 2024 Summer Olympics and was named his country's flag bearer.
Nettasinghe was born on 17 June 2003. [1] He grew up in Sri Lanka and attended St. Peter's College, Colombo. [2] He quickly became a top badminton player and participated for Sri Lanka at the 2019 BWF World Junior Championships. [3] In 2021, at the age of 18, he won the bronze medal at the Yonex Sunrise Bangladesh Junior International tournament. [2] He then won bronze at the 2022 Uganda Challenge and later became the runner-up at the Sri Lankan national championships. [2] He also reached the quarterfinals of the India International Challenge, defeating a player ranked 83rd globally and then one ranked 105th before losing to 38th-ranked Subhankar Dey. [2]
Nettasinghe was ranked 773rd in the world by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in 2022, but had jumped to 150th by March 2023. [2] He won another bronze medal at the Uganda Challenge early in 2023 and received the honor of "Most Outstanding Badminton Player" at the Sri Lankan national school sports awards ceremony in March that year. [2] In September 2023, Nettasinghe was the runner-up at the Xpora Indonesia International Challenge, losing in the final to Alwi Farhan in a performance described as "nothing short of spectacular" by Sri Lankan officials. [4] His global ranking rose to 83rd after the tournament. [5] Later that month, he was chosen as the sole Sri Lankan badminton representative at the Asian Games, where he reached the top 16. [5] [6]
By April 2024, Nettasinghe was ranked 72nd globally by the BWF. [7] He was chosen to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the men's singles, being ranked 32nd among players eligible for the event. [8] Aged 20 at the time of his selection, he was the youngest badminton player to directly qualify for the 2024 Olympics and became the youngest Sri Lankan Olympic badminton player. Sri Lanka participated at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which was held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The country's participation at London marked its sixteenth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics, having missed only the 1976 Games. The delegation consisted of seven competitors: two athletics competitors, two badminton players one shooter and two short-distance swimmers. Cooray, Samarakoon and Karunaratne qualified for the Games by meeting their respective qualifying standards; the remainder of the team entered through wildcard or quota places. Karunarante was the flag bearer for the opening and closing ceremonies.
Kevin Haroldo Cordón Buezo is a Guatemalan badminton player. He won two men's singles titles at the Pan American Games, four titles at the Pan Am Championships, and six titles at the Central American and Caribbean Games. He is a five-time Olympian for Guatemala participating at the 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020 and the 2024 Olympic Games.
Niluka Karunaratne is a Sri Lankan badminton player who has competed at the Olympics in 2012, 2016 and 2020. His father Louie Karunaratne and brothers Dinuka Karunaratne, Chamika Karunaratne and Diluka Karunaratne are also professional badminton players. He is currently regarded as the number one premiere badminton player in Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka's most decorated badminton player with a record 21 medals to his name at international events including 9 gold medals. He also holds the unique distinction of winning five gold medals in five different continents. He reached his higher career singles ranking of 34 in June 2013, which is also the personal best ranking by a Sri Lankan badminton player. He has also emerged as national badminton champion for record 17 times, the most by a Sri Lankan badminton player. Despite his achievements in the sport, he was also sidelined for disciplinary issues on few occasions.
Derek Wong is a retired Singaporean badminton player. Wong is a two-time Olympian, who took part at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, where he was flag bearer in the latter's Parade of Nations.
Misha Zilberman is an Olympic badminton player. Born in Russia, he competed for Israel at the 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, coming in 33rd, 14th, and 15th respectively, with his 2024 results still to be determined. He also won a bronze medal at the 2022 European Badminton Championships, and bronze medals at the 2019 and 2023 European Games. He is the first Israeli player to win a medal at the European Badminton Championships. Zilberman represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in badminton in the Men's singles, in his fourth consecutive Olympic Games, and came in 27th.
Kate Jessica Kim Lee Foo Kune is a badminton player from Mauritius. She began playing badminton in Mauritius at age six. Her first major tournament participation was 2013 BWF World Championships in China, where she lost in the first round of women's singles to Sarah Walker of England. Foo Kune represented her country at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was the flag bearer for Mauritius during the Parade of Nations.
Tanisha Crasto is an Indian badminton player. She won the gold at the Asia Team Championships in 2024 and the bronze at the 2023 Asia Mixed Team Championships. She formerly represented Bahrain and United Arab Emirates before switching to India in 2017.
Lakshya Sen is an Indian badminton player. He's a former World Junior No. 1. Sen is a bronze medalist at the World Championships, a gold medalist at the Thomas Cup, a silver medalist at the Asian Games and a gold and silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games. He has also won bronze medals at the Asia Team and Asia Mixed Team Championships. Sen won the Canada Open and was the runner-up at the All England Open. At the junior level, he has won a gold and silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games, a bronze medal at World Junior Championships and a gold and bronze medal at Asia Junior Championships.
Supanida Katethong is a Thai badminton player. She won the gold medal in the women's singles at the 2023 SEA Games, and also part of Thai winning team at the Games in 2021 and 2023. Known as May Sai, this is to avoid confusion with another May, which is Ratchanok "May" Intanon. She is also a left-handed player.
Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa is a Sri Lankan badminton player. She competed at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, also at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games. Hendahewa was the women' singles champion at the 2014 Sri Lanka national championships. She won her first senior international title at the 2017 Lagos International tournament in the women's singles and doubles event. Together with Kavidi Sirimannage, they claimed the gold medal in the 2019 South Asian Games. She became one of the first two Sri Lankans to win a BWF World Tour tournament, when she won the mixed doubles event alongside Sachin Dias at the 2022 Odisha Open.
Loh Kean Yew OLY is a Singaporean badminton player. He is the former men's singles world champion, winning the title at the 2021 BWF World Championships, becoming the first Singaporean to achieve this feat.
Kunlavut Vitidsarn is a Thai badminton player. He is the current men's singles World Champion as he won the gold medal at the 2023 World Championships, and a silver medalist at the 2024 Olympic Games. He was also three-times World Junior champion, winning in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He is nicknamed the "Three-Game God" because his playing style requires him to play three games long and always win in the end.
Pearly Tan Koong Le is a Malaysian badminton player. An Olympian, she and Thinaah Muralitharan created history by becoming the first ever Malaysian semi-finalists at the women's doubles event at the 2024 Summer Olympics. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Tan and Muralitharan became gold medalists in the women's doubles and mixed team event.
Thinaah Muralitharan is a Malaysian badminton player. An Olympian, she and Pearly Tan created history by becoming the first ever Malaysian semi-finalists at the women's doubles event at the 2024 Summer Olympics. She won the gold medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the women's doubles with partner Pearly Tan and in the mixed team event.
Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori is a Nigerian badminton player. He started playing badminton together with his brother in 2005, and later he was selected to join Nigeria senior national team in 2017. Opeyori won the African Championships and African Games in the singles event in 2019. He competed at the 2020 Tokyo, and 2024 Paris Olympics, where he was assigned as a country team captain and also flag bearer during the Paris Olympics parade of nations.
Alwi Farhan Alhasny is an Indonesian badminton player. He was part of the Indonesia men's team squad that won gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games. He won the boys' singles title at the 2023 World Junior Championships.
