Welsh Labour Students (Welsh: Llafur Myfyrwyr Cymru), is an independent student organisation that is the official student wing and a registered socialist society of Welsh Labour, and the Welsh wing of Labour Students.
Welsh Labour Students aim to bring Labour values to campuses and represent students within the Labour Party across Wales. WLS hold regular events namely its Annual Conference in November, which is usually held in the city of one of its "constituent clubs". In addition, members of Welsh Labour Students are often entitled to attend events in Welsh Labour and Labour Students as delegates to represent their organisation.
The most active clubs within Welsh Labour Students are; Aberystwyth Labour Students, Cardiff Labour Students, Bangor Labour Students and Swansea Labour Students.
History
The organisation was founded more recently than their Scottish sister organisation Scottish Labour Students but has existed in some form or another for well over a decade. The most recent incarnation of Welsh Labour Students was officially founded in 2007 by the Chair at the time, Luke Young. In 2012 reform to Labour Students meant that the Chair of Welsh Labour Students replaced the Wales Co-Ordinator on Labour Students National Committee, solidifying the position of Welsh Labour Students in National Labour Students' structures.
Internal organisation
Whilst membership of Welsh Labour Students only requires membership of the Labour Party at a further or higher education institution in Wales, becoming a committee member requires be a member at a "constituent club" of Welsh Labour Students. Those currently consist of: Aberystwyth Labour Students, Bangor Labour Club, Cardiff Labour Students and Swansea Labour Students.
Welsh Labour Students has a committee made up of 14 people. All positions are elected at the annual Welsh Labour Students Conference held in November.
Campaigning
Welsh Labour Students members are involved in election campaigning in Wales and across the UK, and the organisation mobilises its members to take part in campaigns in marginal seats across the country.
In addition to this, for the first time in 2017 Welsh Labour Students ran its own issue-based priority campaign on access to Trans healthcare in Wales in memory of Welsh Labour Students committee member and trans activist Lily Summers. It criticised the current provisions for trans healthcare in Wales and pushed policy through Welsh Labour Conference in February 2017.[1]
The motion to Welsh Labour Conference passed unanimously and was adopted by the Executive Committee of Welsh Labour. On 25 August 2017, the Welsh Government announced the creation of a new trans healthcare service in Wales and the establishment of a Gender Identity Clinic in Cardiff,[2] both aims of the motion passed by Welsh Labour Students earlier that year.
Hywel Rhodri Morgan was a Welsh Labour politician who was the First Minister of Wales and the Leader of Welsh Labour from 2000 to 2009. He was also the Assembly Member for Cardiff West from 1999 to 2011 and the Member of Parliament for Cardiff West from 1987 to 2001. He remains the longest-serving First Minister of Wales, having served in the position for 9 years and 304 days. He was Chancellor of Swansea University from 2011 until his death in 2017.
The University of Wales is a confederal university based in Cardiff, Wales. Founded by royal charter in 1893 as a federal university with three constituent colleges – Aberystwyth, Bangor and Cardiff – the university was the first university established in Wales, one of the four countries in the United Kingdom. The university was, prior to the break up of the federation, the second largest university in the UK.
Cardiff University is a public research university in Cardiff, Wales. It was established in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and became a founding college of the University of Wales in 1893. It was renamed University College, Cardiff in 1972 and merged with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in 1988 to become University of Wales College, Cardiff and then University of Wales, Cardiff in 1996. In 1997 it received degree-awarding powers, but held them in abeyance. Young Liberals is the youth and student organisation of the British Liberal Democrats. Membership is automatic for members of the Liberal Democrats aged under 30. It organises a number of fringe events at the Liberal Democrat Conference, which is held twice each year.

The National Eisteddfod of Wales is the largest of several eisteddfodau that are held annually, mostly in Wales. Its eight days of competitions and performances are considered the largest music and poetry festival in Europe. Competitors typically number 6,000 or more, and overall attendance generally exceeds 100,000 visitors, the highest recently being 118,000 attending the 2022 festival. The 2018 Eisteddfod was held in Cardiff Bay with a fence-free 'Maes'. In 2020, the event was held virtually under the name AmGen; events were held over a one-week period.
Islam is a minority faith in Wales followed by 2.2 % of its population with about 64,000 adherents recorded as per 2021 Census up from about 46,000 adherents in the 2011 Census. The earliest recorded connections between Wales and the Muslim world dates back to the early 12th Century. There has been a Somali and Yemeni Islamic community in Cardiff since the mid-19th century, founded by seafarers to Cardiff Docks. The first purpose-built mosque was erected in Cardiff in 1947.
Plaid Ifanc is the youth and student wing of Plaid Cymru, a political party in Wales.
Goronwy Owen Goronwy-Roberts, Baron Goronwy-Roberts,, was a Welsh Labour member of Parliament.
Christine Chapman is a Welsh Labour Co-operative politician who was a Member of the National Assembly for Wales for Cynon Valley from 1999 to 2016.
Scottish Young Liberals is the Youth and Student wing of the Scottish Liberal Democrats. Reformed from the Scottish Young Liberal Democrats in 2008 and Liberal Youth Scotland in 2017, the organisation has taken a prominent role in party conferences. Its membership is open to any member of the Liberal Democrats living, working or studying in Scotland and is either under 30 years of age or in full or part-time education above that age.
Welsh Young Liberals is the successor to what was previously "Myfyrwyr a Ieuenctid y Democratiaid Rhyddfrydol Cymru – Liberal Democrat Youth and Students Wales” and constitutes the youth wing of the Welsh Liberal Democrats. Its membership is open to any member of the Liberal Democrats living, working or studying in Wales provided they are under 26 years of age and/or in full/part-time education above that age.
