Andrew Steven Ranger [1] is a British Labour Party politician who has been Member of Parliament for Wrexham since July 2024. [2]
Born in Nantwich,Ranger read microelectronics and software engineering at Newcastle University,later completing a postgraduate diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. [3] He has lived in Wrexham since 1999 and spent the majority of his career working in hospitality,beginning as a kitchen porter and rising to hotel general manager. [4] Prior to his election he worked as a freelance accountant and business consultant,specialising in the development of small to medium-sized enterprises. [3]
Ranger has been a Labour member since 2011,joining the party to campaign against the coalition government's policy of austerity. [5] He serves on the Offa Community Council and has acted as chair,vice-chair and secretary of the Wrexham Constituency Labour Party. [4]
On 8 December 2022,Ranger was selected as Labour candidate for Wrexham,having secured nominations from the constituency's seven Labour Party branches and Unite the Union. [6] He was elected as an MP in the 2024 United Kingdom general election with a majority of 5,948,defeating the Conservative incumbent Sarah Atherton. [7]
In an interview on 18 September 2024,Ranger commented that "being elected as Wrexham’s MP is the biggest honour of my life and I will strive to do my best for all the people of Wrexham". [8] On 16 October 2024,he sponsored the Licensing Hours Extensions Bill,a proposed amendment to the Licensing Act 2003,allowing the Home Secretary to temporarily change alcohol licensing laws at short notice without the approval of Parliament. [9] The Bill is intended avoid incidents like the 2023 Women's World Cup final when many British pubs were unable to serve alcohol during the game's first half. John Marek is a British politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wrexham from 1983 to 2001,and the Member of the Welsh Assembly (AM) for Wrexham from 1999 to 2007. A member of the Labour Party until 2003,he successfully stood for re-election to the Welsh Assembly as a John Marek Independent Party candidate. Marek founded and led Forward Wales from 2003 until 2010,when the party was disbanded and he joined the Conservatives.
Ifor Huw Irranca-Davies is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician who has served as Deputy First Minister of Wales since August 2024,and as Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs since March 2024. He has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Ogmore since 2016. Irranca-Davies was previously the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ogmore from 2002 to 2016.

The 2024 general election was held on Thursday,4 July 2024. Thirty-two seats were up for election in Wales as the general election occurred after the recently completed boundary review took effect. The Labour Party remained the largest party in Wales,gaining six seats for a total of 27. Both Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats made gains,taking them to four seats and one seat respectively. The Conservatives lost all thirteen seats they had held previously,leaving the party without Westminster representation from Wales for the first time since 2005.
