Catherine Ann Fookes (born October 1970) is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Monmouthshire since 2024.
Fookes was born in 1970 [1] and was educated at the private Godolphin School,which costs £52,000 a year to attend. [2] She worked in the private sector and later served as chief executive of Women's Equality Network Wales and chair of the Welsh think tank,Fabians Cymru. [3]
In 2017 Fookes was appointed director of the Women's Equality Network Wales. [4]
In 2017 Fookes contested the Wyesham ward on Monmouthshire County Council. She came second,by 24 votes,to the Welsh Conservatives' Laura Anne Jones. [5] [6] In 2022 she was successfully elected to the Council,representing the Town ward in Monmouth. [7]
While on the council she job-shared the equalities and engagement portfolio on the council. As a councillor on Monmouthshire County Council,Fookes voted in favour of increasing council tax. [8] [9] She quit her portfolio and job for Women's Equality Network Wales in 2023,after being selected as Labour parliamentary candidate for the 2024 UK general election and to work on the campaign full-time. In the 2024 general election,Fookes was elected as MP for Monmouthshire with a majority of 3,338 (6.5%),defeating former Secretary of State for Wales David TC Davies. [3] On 17 July,Fookes announced her intention to resign her role as a councillor with a statement on social media,saying she would stand down "after the summer," saying she wished to avoid a by-election for her constituents in the summer holidays. In October 2024,Fookes was elected to the Women and Equalities Select Committee [13]
During the 2024 general election Fookes accumulated more than £25,000 from trade unions and donors,and spent it on her campaign. [14]
In January 2024,Fookes came out in favour of more devolution for the Welsh Parliament,including criminal justice. [15]
In July 2024,Fookes came out and defended embattled First Minister Vaughan Gething. [16]
In September 2024,Fookes voted in favour of scrapping the £300 a year winter fuel allowance to pensioners. [17]
In November 2024,Fookes voted in favour of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill,which proposes to legalise assisted suicide. [18]
Plaid Cymru is a centre-left to left-wing,Welsh nationalist political party in Wales,committed to Welsh independence from the United Kingdom. It campaigns on a platform of social democracy and civic nationalism. The party is a supporter of the European Union and is a member of the European Free Alliance (EFA). The party holds 4 of 32 Welsh seats in the UK Parliament,12 of 60 seats in the Senedd,and 202 of 1,231 principal local authority councillors. Plaid was formed in 1925 under the name Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru and Gwynfor Evans won the first Westminster seat for the party at the 1966 Carmarthen by-election.

The 2017 Welsh local elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey,which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey,the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years,but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election,which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election.
Jane Winifred Dodds is a Welsh politician who has served as Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats since 2017. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brecon and Radnorshire at the seat's 2019 by-election,but was an MP for only three months before being defeated in the general election later the same year. In May 2021,Dodds was elected to the Senedd on the Mid and West Wales list. She is the only Liberal Democrat MS in the Senedd.

She previously served as leader of the Isle of Anglesey County Council from 2017 to 2024.
