Jonathan James Hinder [2] is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Pendle and Clitheroe since 2024. He gained the seat from Andrew Stephenson,a Conservative. [3] [4]
Hinder grew up in Downham and went to school in Clitheroe. He studied history and politics at university,and then joined the police,where he rose to the rank of Inspector. He left the police service in 2022,according to his own website. [5]
Hinder grew up in Downham and attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School before studying History and Politics at the University of Oxford. [6] Hinder served as a police constable,sergeant and inspector in London,mostly in emergency response roles,before leaving after a decade to pursue politics. [7]
Hinder was selected as the Labour Party candidate for the Pendle and Clitheroe constituency at a meeting of party members on November 11 2023. [8] In 2023 Hinder contested the St Mary's Ward in the Ribble Valley Borough Council elections losing to two Liberal Democrat candidates. [9]
Hinder was elected as the first MP for the new Pendle and Clitheroe constituency,and the first Labour MP to win Clitheroe since the 1945 General Election. He secured a majority of 902 over the incumbent Conservative MP,Andrew Stephenson. He was sworn in to Parliament on July 10 2024. [10]
In November 2024,Hinder criticised Amnesty International for intervening in a Supreme Court of the United Kingdom case to support gender recognition rights for the trans community. He described Amnesty as "so far gone" and encouraged people to follow an anti-trans campaign group within the Labour Party if they had "enough of this nonsense". [11]

Lanehead quarry is situated to the West at the termination of Chatburn Old Road. Ribble lane at 240 above sea level leads down to the River Ribble North of the village,the top of Downham road being 150 feet higher.

The parish lies on the north west side of Pendle Hill below the Nick o' Pendle. The village is just off the A59,Liverpool to York main road,since the construction of the Clitheroe By-Pass. Older roads through the parish include one from Clitheroe to Whalley which passes through the Standen area and another to Burnley which passes Pendleton Hall.

It adjoins the Ribble Valley parishes of Rimington,Twiston,Worston,Chatburn and Sawley,and the Pendle parish of Barley-with-Wheatley Booth.
