Douglas McAllister is a Scottish Labour Party politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Dunbartonshire [1] since July 2024.
He is also serving as a Councillor for the Kilpatrick Ward in West Dunbartonshire which he has represented since 2003 (previously named Hardgate Ward). He was also the Provost of West Dunbartonshire Council.
In 2021 McAllister contested Clydebank and Milngavie for the Scottish Parliament elections,coming second.
McAllister graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1995 with a law degree. [2]
West Dunbartonshire is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland. The area lies to the north-west of the Glasgow City council area and contains many of Glasgow's commuter towns and villages. The election was the first one using six new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004,each elected three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation. The new wards replace 22 single-member wards which used the plurality system of election.
Elections to East Dunbartonshire Council were held on 3 May 2007,the same day as the other Scottish local government elections and the Scottish Parliament general election. This election was the first to use eight new multi-member wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004. Each ward returned three councillors elected under the single transferable vote form of proportional representation,replacing the previous 24 single-member wards,which had used the plurality system of election.
Martin John Docherty-Hughes is a Scottish National Party politician. He was previously the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Dunbartonshire from 2015 until his defeat in 2024. He has also served as SNP Defence Spokesperson from 2023 to 2024.
