Adebayo Alaba [1] is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Southend East and Rochford since 2024. [2] [3]

Early life and education

Alaba is from the Forest Gate area of London and of Nigerian descent. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing and Business from Coventry University in 1995. He later studied Social Politics the London School of Economics in 2011. [4]

Parliamentary Career

Alaba was elected as a member of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on 21st October 2024. [5]

Personal life

Alaba is married and is a father of three. [6] He is a landlord and owns seven rental properties. [7]

Alaba is a former paratrooper. [8] In 2024, he was airdropped to Normandy as part of the commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings. [9]

A by-election was held on 3 February 2022 in the parliamentary constituency of Southend West following the murder of the Conservative MP Sir David Amess on 15 October 2021. Amess had been the MP for the constituency since 1997, and previously represented the nearby seat of Basildon from 1983 to 1997. Similarly to the 2016 Batley and Spen by-election—held after Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered—the major opposition parties declined to stand out of respect for Amess. The Conservative candidate Anna Firth won the by-election with 86% of the vote, with a turnout of 24%. No other candidate reached the 5% threshold to save their election deposit.
