Luke Sean Murphy [1] is a British Labour politician who has served as the Member of Parliament for Basingstoke since the 2024 general election. [2]
Murphy graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Politics and Economics from the University of Bath and a Master of Science (MSc) in International Politics from SOAS University of London. [3]
Murphy was selected as the Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for Basingstoke in February 2024 after the previous candidate, David Lawrence, resigned for personal reasons in November 2023. Murphy had previously served as a political advisor to members of Ed Miliband's Shadow Cabinet. [4]
Murphy won the seat of Basingstoke for the Labour Party in the 2024 general election, unseating the Conservative Party incumbent Maria Miller and becoming the constituency's first Labour MP. [5] He earned a majority of 6,484, 42.7% of the vote and a 14% swing for Labour from the 2019 general election. [6]
Murphy is bisexual. [7] In 2024, PinkNews listed Murphy among a number of LGBTQ+ parliamentarians. [8]
James Francis Murphy is a Scottish former politician who served as Leader of the Scottish Labour Party from 2014 to 2015 and Secretary of State for Scotland from 2008 to 2010. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for East Renfrewshire, formerly Eastwood, from 1997 to 2015. He identifies as a social democrat and has expressed support for a foreign policy of Western interventionism. He has been described as being on the political right of the Labour Party.
