Wendell Cleophus Labrooy (born 25 September 1971) is a former Sri Lankan domestic cricketer who also currently serves as an international match referee. [1] He played as a left handed batsman and bowled right arm medium fast in domestic matches. [2]

Although he couldn't make it into the national team, his elder brother Graeme Labrooy managed to represent in Sri Lanka in international matches on the back of impressive domestic performances. [3] Wendell has also worked as a banker at the Hatton National Bank. [4]

Biography

His elder brother Graeme is also an elite international match referee. His younger brother Maxwell Labrooy who was also the third brother in the Labrooy family also played school cricket. His father Donald Labrooy was a renowned national level boxer who had represented Sri Lanka in many boxing competitions. Donald died in June 2020.

Early years

He pursued his education at Maris Stella College in Negombo just like his other two brothers. He played school cricket for Maris Stella College and captained the Maris Stella College cricket team.

His major achievement during school cricket came in 1990 when he went onto score 1000 runs in a single school cricket season while also capturing 73 wickets opening the bowling. He incidentally served as the captain of the Maris Stella College when he achieved the double of 1000 runs and 50 wickets in 1990 season. [5]

He was also the first schoolboy cricketer representing Maris Stella College to score 1000 runs in a single season. [4] For his stellar performances, he also received the first runner-up award among outstation schoolboys during the Sunday Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award ceremony in 1991 and also won the runner-up awards for best batsman and bowler.

He played for Sri Lanka U19 team primarily during the early 1980s and late 1990s although he was never in contention for a place in the senior side mainly due to lack of international matches for Sri Lanka during the time. He was an established and proven performer at domestic cricket arena as an allrounder and has played club cricket for Burgher Recreation Club, Nondescripts Cricket Club, Colombo Cricket Club and Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club. He joined HNB in 1993 and has also went onto play for HNB in mercantile cricket tournaments.

Umpiring career

It was revealed that he initially wanted to be an umpire at first-class level and international level and he even attended the local umpire's examination way back in 2006 alongside the likes of Kumar Dharmasena, Lyndon Hannibal and Ruchira Palliyaguruge. [4] However, his umpiring dream did not materialize due to his decision to play club cricket in Australia in 2006. On his return from Australia to Sri Lanka, he realized that Sri Lanka Cricket had stuck with a set number of referees and decided to umpire at low-tier competitions including mill division III and mill division II. [4]

Career as referee

In November 2017, he was inducted to the ICC Panel of Match Referees and his first assignment as international match referee came during Sri Lanka women's bilateral home series against Pakistan in March 2018. [4] Since then he had primarily served as a match referee in Women's ODIs and T20Is. He also officiated as match referee in 2020 Lanka Premier League and 2021 Lanka Premier League. [7] [8]

In January 2022, he stood in as match referee for the first time in a men's international match during the first ODI between Afghanistan and the Netherlands in Qatar. [9] [6]

Graeme Fredrick Labrooy is a former Sri Lankan cricketer who played in nine Test matches and 44 One Day International from 1986 to 1992. He was the chairman of selectors for the national team and currently serves as an international match referee. His younger brother Wendell Labrooy is also a first-class cricketer and match referee. Labrooy holds the unique distinction of never playing any of his nine test matches at home. He had modelled his text book bowling action on Richard Hadlee and he was regarded as a huge fan of Hadlee.

Samiur Rahman was a Bangladeshi cricketer and umpire. He played for Bangladesh in its first-ever One Day International (ODI) game against Pakistan at Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in 1986 Asia Cup. He played in total two ODIs. Apart from being a new ball swing bowler, he was also a useful lower order batsman. Like his brother, Yousuf Rahman, Sami was a regular for the national side in the first half of the 1980s.

Deshabandu Asanka Pradeep Gurusinha is a Sri Lankan Australian former international cricketer who had an 11-year international career, playing 41 Tests and 147 One Day Internationals for Sri Lanka. He was a key member for 1996 Cricket World Cup winning team for Sri Lanka, who is a specialist batsman helped to win the 1996 World Cup final with 65 in a partnership of 125 with the final's Man of the Match, Aravinda de Silva.

The Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Referees is composed of former international cricket players who are appointed by the ICC to oversee all Test match, One Day International and Twenty20 International cricket matches in the capacity of Match referee. The referees are ultimately in charge of all international cricket matches, and act as the ICC's representative at the grounds. In addition they are responsible for imposing penalties for infringements of the ICC Code of Conduct, and so being ex-international cricketers they can ensure that the punishments dealt out are just. The referees also form part of the ICC's umpire performance review, submitting reports about the umpires after each match.

Ruchira Palliyaguruge is a Sri Lankan umpire and a former first-class cricketer. Ruchira played for Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, Chilaw Marians Cricket Club, Saracens Sports Club, Nondescripts Cricket Club, Old Cambrian Sports Club. Palliyaguruge bowled right-arm medium pace and batted right-handed. Playing mostly club cricket, he has over 200 first-class wickets to his name and also over 4000 runs in a career that began in 1989/90.

Robert Stephen Dunne is a former New Zealand cricket umpire. He was the first umpire to stand in 100 ODIs.

Raja Raveendra Wimalasiri is a Sri Lankan cricketer and umpire. He stood in his first One Day International (ODI) on 23 July 2013, between Sri Lanka and South Africa. He stood in his first Twenty20 International (T20I) on 2 August 2013, also between Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Prageeth Rambukwella is a Sri Lankan former cricketer, who played in seven first-class and nine List A matches between 1995 and 2002. He is now an umpire, and stood in a tour match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in June 2015. He is a member of the International Panel of ICC Umpires. Prageeth was educated at Nalanda College, Colombo.

Lyndon Hannibal is a Sri Lankan international cricket umpire and a former first class cricketer. He stood as an umpire in the tour match between Sri Lanka Board President's XI vs Indian national cricket team in August 2015.
