Wendover Nugget is a hotel and casino located in West Wendover, Nevada. In addition to the Montego Bay Resort, it is located right on the border line between Utah and Nevada. There is a connecting skyway between the Nugget and the Montego Bay. Both establishments' buildings are almost directly abut the state line; their parking lots are in Utah.
The origins of the first building at this location dates back to 1926 when William "Bill" Smith opened up a service station and then in 1931 expanded it when gambling became legal. [1] He then named it the Stateline Casino. [2] From 2002 to 2004 it was named the Stateline Nugget. Then after changing ownership in 2004, the casino was renamed to what is now called the Wendover Nugget.
In 2010, the casino was acquired by David Ensign, half brother of former U.S. Senator John Ensign. [3] As of 2023, the casino is operated by Maverick Gaming, who also operate the nearby Red Garter. [4]
On August 3, 2007, two people were involved in attempting to rob the casino. One was an employee of the casino. [5] [6]
On October 14, 2007, Carlos Garcia-Castillijos was murdered. During a fight between him and his wife, two brothers intervened, and were suspected of killing Carlos. The two suspects in the case were apprehended by police in Utah. [7] [8]
West Wendover is a small city in Elko County, Nevada, United States. The population was 4,410 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elko micropolitan area. West Wendover is located on the eastern border of Nevada and the western edge of the Great Salt Lake Desert and is contiguous with Wendover, Utah, with which it is sometimes confused. It is home to five casinos and a cannabis dispensary which attract many visitors from neighboring Utah, where both casino gambling and non-medical cannabis are illegal. Interstate 80 runs just north of the cities, while Interstate 80 Business runs through the two cities.
