River Inn is a closed casino resort located alongside the Truckee River in Reno, Nevada. It was built in an area known for its hot spring. Granite Hot Springs operated on the site as early as the 1870s, later becoming Laughton's Hot Springs in 1884. The latter was opened by Sumner Laughton, who later changed the name to Lawton's Hot Springs, reflecting a common misspelling of his surname.
The local Yori family owned the resort from 1936 to 1970 and leased it to numerous people during that time. In the 1950s, Lawton's included a restaurant, slot machines, and a cocktail lounge. The property also offered a nine-hole golf course into the 1960s. New leasees renovated and expanded the resort in 1963, renaming it the Holiday Lodge. The expansion included a new motel structure as well as a casino.
In 1970, it was renovated to become the Rodeway Inn and Holiday Spa, part of the Rodeway Inns chain. It was renamed the River Inn two years later. An RV park was added in 1973. The resort later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and was closed on December 15, 1978; it has not reopened since then.
Developer George Benny planned to reopen the resort in the early 1980s and added an A-frame casino structure to the property. In 1984, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for financial-related crimes. Businessman T.M. Chang later made several failed attempts to renovate and reopen the resort. In 2020, the River Inn was sold to businessman Lawrence McNutt, who planned to make it his personal residence.
The River Inn was built alongside the Truckee River in an area known for its hot spring. The site dates as far back as the 1870s, when it was known as Granite Hot Springs. [3] Sumner Laughton (also known as Samuel Laughton) bought the site in 1884 and renamed it Laughton's Hot Springs. [4] [5] [6] [7] The name was later changed to Lawton's Hot Springs, reflecting a common misspelling of Laughton's surname. [4]
The Yori family of Reno acquired the resort in 1936 [8] [9] and leased it out to numerous people over the years. [10] [11] A midget car racing track was constructed on the property in 1937. [12] [13] [14] A year later, the track was remodeled for greyhound racing. [15] [16] Lawton's Hot Springs was popular among celebrities, including boxers Max Baer and Jack Dempsey. [17] In 1939, athlete Helen Crlenkovich performed a diving exhibition at the resort. [18]
Four businessmen from Covina, California took over operations in 1957 and announced plans to expand the resort. At the time, it had 25 motel rooms, a restaurant, slot machines, a cocktail lounge, and a nine-hole golf course. [19] [20] [21] One of the businessmen, Bob Siegel, became the sole operator in early 1958. [22]
In 1962, operation of Lawton's Hot Springs was taken over by three couples from California. They launched a $400,000 remodeling project and planned to rename the resort Holiday Lodge. Among the new group was Bud Ruppert, who owned other Holiday Lodge properties in Nevada and California. [23] The new Holiday Lodge opened in 1963, with 100 newly constructed motel rooms and a casino, [24] [25] [26] the latter eventually closing in September 1964. [27]
Security National Bank of Nevada sued the Holiday Lodge lessees in 1965, alleging it was owed $30,000 on a promissory note. [28] Subsequent legal troubles emerged between the lessees and the Yori family, which regained control of the resort in March 1966. [29] [30] [31] They spent two months remodeling the Holiday Lodge before reopening it on June 10, 1966. [32] Mark Yori said, "We've done a lot of remodeling and fixing to put it back to where it once was as an attraction for Reno families as well as for the tourists". Among the improvements was a new convention and banquet hall with capacity for 300 people. [33] The golf course was also renovated. [34] At the time, the hot springs included a health spa with three outdoor pools and nine indoor pools. [32]
The Yori family sold the Holiday Lodge in 1970. It was renovated to become the Rodeway Inn and Holiday Spa, part of the Rodeway Inns hotel chain. [35] [36] [37] In 1972, the property's name was changed to River Inn. [37] [38] An RV park was added a year later. [39] [40] During the mid-1970s, the River Inn hosted annual rafting races each Easter. [41] In 1977, a judge ruled that the River Inn was not liable for the death of an intoxicated woman who drowned in one of the hot spring pools two years earlier. [42] [43]
During the 1970s, the resort was owned by a group of businessmen from Orange County, California, [44] through companies known as Civic Center Enterprises and later Leisure Time Development. [45] [46] [47] In 1977, the River Inn defaulted on a loan from Valley Bank of Nevada, which attempted to foreclose the property. At the time, gaming operations were handled by DGS, Inc., run by 1940s Boston Red Sox pitcher Emmett O'Neill. [44] Leisure Time Development took over the resort later that year. [48]
In January 1978, the Washoe County Commission ordered the River Inn to stop the spread of effluent water and spray from its sewer lagoons. The wastewater had been flowing for years into Reno's main water source, the Truckee River, posing a potential health risk. [48] The resort began paying up to $500 daily to have the sewage hauled by tanker truck to a sewage treatment plant. As a result of these expenditures, [49] [50] the River Inn filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March 1978. [51] The resort owed more than $2 million to creditors. [46]
The River Inn closed on December 15, 1978, at the ruling of a federal bankruptcy judge. Approximately 20 families were living at the RV park and were given several days to vacate the property. [52] [53] The MGM Grand resort and numerous locals offered assistance to the displaced families. [54] [55]
In 1979, the River Inn was bought by developer George Benny, who then sold it to businessman T.M. Chang of California. Benny retained the resort through a leasehold agreement with Chang, [56] [57] who still owned the land beneath the resort. [58] Benny planned to renovate and expand the resort. The revamped property would use a package sewer plant, although opponents argued that its leach fields would threaten their wells and the Truckee River. Benny's attorney assured property owners that they would be taken care of in the event of water contamination. [59] Benny's plans were approved by the county in January 1980. [60] He spent $6 million to renovate the resort, which he planned to rename as George Benny's River Palace. The resort's opening was scheduled for April 1981 but was delayed by the remodeling. [61] Benny's additions included an A-frame casino structure [62] and the foundation for a spa that was never built. [58]
Benny faced legal problems in 1982, when he was accused of orchestrating a check-kiting scheme. [61] [63] [64] Numerous liens were filed against the closed resort, [65] [66] and Benny was sentenced in 1984 to 30 years in prison. He had been found guilty of mail fraud and racketeering after he schemed lenders out of $40 million to finance his real estate projects. [58]
California developer Jack Fleming offered to buy Benny's properties, including his leasehold interest in the River Inn. However, Fleming backed out of the deal in January 1984, following problems with his investment group. He returned with a new group at the end of the year, offering $3.5 million for the River Inn. [67] [58] Fleming planned to bring back the Yori family as operators, [68] and they would also serve as financial partners. [69] However, his second purchase attempt also failed to materialize. [70]
Chang regained control of the resort in 1985. [56] A year later, he announced plans to renovate the motel and finish the remaining facilities over a five-year period. [57] [71] In 1988, he announced new plans to demolish the existing 83 motel rooms and build new lodging accommodations, although he would retain the A-frame casino structure. The resort would be known as River Inn Hot Springs. [72] [56] [73] The site's hot springs would be the primary attraction, with the casino as a secondary feature. [74] Chang's plans were later put on hold due to poor economic conditions. [75]
In 1991, the Reno City Council approved Chang's request for the property to be annexed into city limits, allowing the River Inn to acquire city sewer service. Chang hoped to have the first phase opened in 1992. [76] The full project was expected to take 10 years to complete, at a cost of $50 million. It would be developed through Chang's company, Westlake Development. [77] Construction did not begin as scheduled, and Chang later hoped to have the resort open by 1999, with various phases of construction continuing through 2013. [62] [78] [79] These plans also did not come to fruition. In 2006, developer Blake Smith considered purchasing the closed resort. His plans would have included the demolition of the motel, to be replaced by condo hotel units. [80] [81] The closed resort was up for sale or lease in 2007 [82] and has sometimes been used for SWAT training. [81] [83]
Chang died in 2017, at the age of 97. [84] A year later, Westlake put the resort up for sale again. [1] It occupies 24 acres, excluding another 11 acres leased from Union Pacific Railroad, which has long had a railroad track running across the front of the resort. [2] It sold in December 2020 [85] to Lawrence McNutt, owner of an information technology company in California. He had sought to relocate to Reno, where he was opening another branch of his company. McNutt and his girlfriend planned to make the River Inn their personal residence. They cleaned up the buildings, [86] [87] which had been subjected to vandalism over the years. [3] McNutt said the buildings were still structurally sound, despite sitting un-used for decades. [87] He suggested that community events could take place at the resort in the future. [87]
Shortly after taking ownership, McNutt advertised camping on the site to gauge the public's interest in such a feature, although the city sent him a cease and desist order, noting that he lacked a business license. The city also advised him that he would have to pave the entire parking lot if he were to operate a camping business. The resort's location along the Truckee River also presented strict city codes relating to amenities such as sewer. [88] [89]

Circus Circus includes the largest permanent circus in the world. It features circus and trapeze acts, as well as carnival games, at its Carnival Midway. The resort also includes the Adventuredome, an indoor amusement park.
The Stardust Resort and Casino was a casino resort located on 60 acres (24 ha) along the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. The Stardust was conceived by Tony Cornero, and construction began in 1954. Cornero died in 1955, and the project was taken over by his brother. The Stardust had numerous creditors, and construction was stopped in 1956, when the project ran out of money.
The Hacienda was a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, that operated from 1956 to 1996. It was opened by Warren Bayley, who owned other Hacienda properties in California as well. Bayley opened the hotel portion in June 1956, although the opening of the casino was delayed as the Nevada Gaming Control Board objected to his choice of casino manager, Jake Kozloff. The casino portion eventually opened on October 17, 1956. The $6 million property had 266 rooms and the largest pool on the Las Vegas Strip. Like its sister properties in California, the resort included a neon sign that depicted a cowboy riding a palomino horse.
The DunesHotel & Country Club was a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It opened on May 23, 1955, as the tenth resort on the Strip. It was initially owned by a group of businessmen from out of state, but failed to prosper under their management. It also opened at a time of decreased tourism, while the Strip was simultaneously becoming overbuilt with hotel rooms. A few months after the opening, management was taken over by the operators of the Sands resort, also on the Strip. This group failed to improve business and relinquished control less than six months later.
The Landmark was a hotel and casino located in Winchester, Nevada, east of the Las Vegas Strip and across from the Las Vegas Convention Center. Frank Caroll, the project's original owner, purchased the property in 1961. Fremont Construction began work on the tower that September, while Caroll opened the adjacent Landmark Plaza shopping center and Landmark Apartments by the end of the year. The tower's completion was expected for early 1963, but because of a lack of financing, construction was stopped in 1962, with the resort approximately 80 percent complete. Up to 1969, the topped-off tower was the tallest building in Nevada until the completion of the International Hotel across the street.
The New Frontier was a hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The property began as a casino and dance club known as Pair O' Dice, opened in 1931. It was sold in 1941, and incorporated into the Hotel Last Frontier, which began construction at the end of the year. The Hotel Last Frontier opened on October 30, 1942, as the second resort on the Las Vegas Strip. The western-themed property included 105 rooms, as well as the Little Church of the West. The resort was devised by R.E. Griffith and designed by his nephew, William J. Moore. Following Griffith's death in 1943, Moore took over ownership and added a western village in 1948. The village consisted of authentic Old West buildings from a collector and would also feature the newly built Silver Slipper casino, added in 1950.
El Rancho Vegas was a hotel and casino at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It opened in 1941, as the first resort on the Strip, known then as part of Highway 91. It was located at what is now the southwest corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Sahara Avenue. The El Rancho Vegas was conceived by Thomas Hull, who owned several hotels in California and wanted to expand his operations to Las Vegas. He decided to build his new resort along Highway 91, on desert land located just outside of city limits. Hull intended to target motorists traveling from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, although his remote location was met with skepticism.
Harrah's Las Vegas is a hotel and casino centrally located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. It is owned by Vici Properties and operated by Caesars Entertainment. The property originally opened as a joint venture with Holiday Inn. Construction began in April 1970, and the hotel portion opened on February 1, 1972, as the Holiday Inn Center Strip. The casino portion, known as the Holiday Casino, opened on July 2, 1973. Shelby Williams was among the casino's investors. After his death in 1977, his wife Claudine Williams took over operations. Holiday Inn purchased an interest in the casino operation in 1979, and bought out Williams entirely in 1983, although she would remain as chairwoman.
KRNV-DT is a television station in Reno, Nevada, United States, affiliated with NBC. It is owned by Cunningham Broadcasting, which maintains joint sales and shared services agreements (JSA/SSA) with Sinclair Broadcast Group, owner of Fox affiliate KRXI-TV, for the provision of certain services. However, Sinclair effectively owns KRNV-DT as the majority of Cunningham's stock is owned by the family of deceased group founder Julian Smith. Sinclair also manages primary sports-formatted independent station and secondary MyNetworkTV affiliate KNSN-TV under a separate JSA with Deerfield Media. The three stations share studios on Vassar Street in Reno; KRNV-DT's transmitter is located on Slide Mountain between SR 431 and I-580/US 395/US 395 ALT in unincorporated Washoe County.
The Silver Slipper was a casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It opened on September 1, 1950. It was built just north of the Frontier hotel-casino, and they both shared the same ownership, although the Silver Slipper's gaming operations were later leased out. Businessman Howard Hughes leased the casino from 1968 until his death in 1976.
Eldorado Resort Casino is a hotel and casino located in Downtown Reno, Nevada. It anchors a network of connected hotel-casinos in the downtown Reno core that included Circus Circus Reno and Silver Legacy Reno and are owned and operated by Caesars Entertainment.
The El Rancho Hotel and Casino was a hotel and casino that operated on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It originally opened on September 2, 1948, as the Navajo-themed Thunderbird. At the time, it was owned by building developer Marion Hicks and Lieutenant Governor of Nevada Clifford A. Jones. A sister property, the Algiers Hotel, was opened south of the Thunderbird in 1953. During the mid-1950s, the state carried out an investigation to determine whether underworld Mafia figures held hidden interests in the resort. Hicks and Jones ultimately prevailed and kept their gaming licenses. Hicks died in 1961, and his position as managing director was taken over by Joe Wells, another partner in the resort. Wells added a horse racing track known as Thunderbird Downs, located behind the resort. The Thunderbird also hosted numerous entertainers and shows, including Flower Drum Song and South Pacific.
The Montage Reno is a high-rise residential building in Reno, Nevada. It previously operated as a hotel and casino from 1978 to 2005, under various names, including Sahara Reno, Reno Hilton, Flamingo Hilton Reno, Flamingo Reno, and Golden Phoenix Reno.
Fitzgeralds Gaming was a gaming and hotel company based in Reno, Nevada, that operated four casinos under the Fitzgeralds brand. It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2000, and subsequently sold all its properties.

Eldorado Resorts acquired Caesars Entertainment Corporation and changed its own name to Caesars Entertainment on July 20, 2020.
The Sundowner is a former hotel and casino located in downtown Reno, Nevada. The Sundowner's 11-story hotel opened in May 1975, and the casino opened two months later. With 349 rooms, it was the largest hotel in Reno until the opening of the MGM Grand in 1978. A 19-story hotel tower was added in 1979, bringing the total number of rooms to 583.
Edna Jackson Carver was an American physician, operator of a health spa at Steamboat Hot Springs, near Reno, Nevada, from 1919 to 1954.
3rd Street Flats is a mixed-use development project located in downtown Reno, Nevada. It includes 94 apartment units, retail space, and a restaurant. It previously operated as Kings Inn, a hotel and casino. The hotel opened in September 1974, and the casino opened the next year. The casino closed in 1982, following financial issues, and the hotel closed on July 12, 1986, because of fire code violations. Although there were plans to reopen the building, it ultimately sat vacant for the next three decades.
Royal Nevada was a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. It was owned by Frank Fishman, who leased it to various individuals during its brief history. The resort was designed by Paul Revere Williams, and construction began in August 1954. The Royal Nevada opened on April 19, 1955, and was among four Las Vegas resorts to open within a six-week period, at a time when demand had declined for additional hotel rooms. The resort faced numerous financial problems, and was closed and reopened several times.
