The Washington Avenue Historic District is located in Downtown West, St. Louis, Missouri along Washington Avenue, and bounded by Delmar Boulevard to the north, Locust Street to the south, 8th Street on the east, and 18th Street on the west. The buildings date from the late 19th century to the early 1920s. They exhibit a variety of popular architectural styles of those years, but most are revival styles or in the commercial style that would later come to be known as the Chicago School of architecture. Most are large multi-story buildings of brick and stone construction, built as warehouses for the St. Louis garment district. Many have terra cotta accents on their facades. After World War II, the decline in domestic garment production and the preference for single-story industrial space led to many of the buildings being vacant or underused due to functional obsolescence.

It encompasses 26 contributing buildings, 22 of which are single family fully attached rowhouse dwellings. They are primarily two-story, brick structures. It also includes a large Second Empire building which was originally a saloon and hotel, a bar and restaurant which also has Second Empire elements, and a smaller Queen Anne style store. The area developed between about 1880 and 1920 and many residents worked for the railroad.

It encompasses 180 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure developed in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. The district is primarily residential and includes a variety of Victorian-era mansions and large dwellings in a variety of popular architectural styles including Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, and American Four Square The houses are detached or semi-detached and are primarily three stories in height with extensive wings to the rear. The district also includes 20th century apartment complexes. Also located in the district is the St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and the Sailors and Soldiers Monument. The separately listed Howard Pyle Studios are also located in the district.

It encompasses 408 contributing buildings in a residential area located west of the Wilmington central business district. It was developed in the mid- to late-19th century and primarily consists of single-family, attached and semi-detached rowhouse dwellings. They are in a variety of popular Late Victorian architectural styles including Second Empire, Queen Anne, Italianate, and Stick style.
