The Western Championships [1] also known as the Western States Championships or Western Sectional Championships [2] was a men's and women's open tennis tournament staged annually at various locations from 1887 until 1978.
On July 4, 1887, the first Championships of the Western States were inaugurated at the Scarlett Ribbon Club in Chicago, Illinois, United States, [3] and the first men's champion was Charles Amherst Chase. In 1895 a women's championship event was added to the schedule which was won by Marion Capwell.
In 1973 the final ladies championship was held that was won by the Australian player Evonne Goolagong. The men's tournament continued to play until 1978 which was won by the American player Eddie Dibbs.
The championships were part of the USLTA Circuit from 1887 until 1923. It became of part of the ILTF Circuit following the United States joining the International Lawn Tennis Federation in 1925 until 1969 In 1970 the tournament became part of the ILTF Grand Prix Circuit. In 1955 and from 1969 until 1973 the women's event was also valid as the Tri-State Championships.
The championships have been played in the following cities; Chicago, Cincinnati, Harbor Springs, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Lake Forest, Minnetonka, Neenah, River Forest and Sharonville. [4]

Tennis Canada is the national governing body of tennis within Canada. It works together with the provincial associations to organize tournaments and rules. They also oversee the Canada Davis Cup team and the Canada Fed Cup team. Tennis Canada was formed in 1890 and is a full member of the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Tennis Canada operates under the auspices of Sport Canada, and is a member of the Canadian Olympic Association. Tennis Canada’s event management team is directly responsible for all national and international competitions in Canada, including junior, senior and wheelchair championships.

The New Jersey State Championships also known as the New Jersey State Tennis Championships or New Jersey State Sectional Championships was a men's and women's tennis tournament first staged in 1882 in Newark, New Jersey USA. The tournament was played at various times on clay courts and grass courts, and ran until 1968 for women's events, and 1973 for men's events.
The Exmouth Open, originally called the Exmouth Lawn Tennis Club Tournament or simply Exmouth Tournament, was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1880. From 1890 the event was known as the Exmouth Open Tennis Tournament. It was hosted by the Exmouth Archery, Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Exmouth, Devon, Great Britain until 1927. It was then hosted by the newly founded Exmouth Lawn Tennis Club until it was abolished as a senior tour event in 1975.

The Northwestern Championships, also known as the North Western Lawn Tennis Association Championships, was an early men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1886. It was first played at the St. Paul Club, Saint Paul, Minnesota, in the United States. The tournament ran as part of ILTF Circuit until 1969.
The Minnesota Open previously known as the Minnesota State Championships is an open men's and women's tennis competition founded in 1902 as the Championship of the Minnesota State Tennis Association. The tournament was first played at the St. Paul Lawn Tennis Club, Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States and ran as part of the ILTF Circuit until 1971.
The Old Dominion Championship also known as the Old Dominion Open Championship was a men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1905. It was first played at the Hermitage Golf Club, Richmond, Virginia, United States in 1905. In 1936 the final edition was played Country Club of Virginia, after which when it was downgraded from the main worldwide ILTF Circuit and discontinued.
The South Island Open Championships was a regional men's and women's grass court then later hard court tennis tournament founded in 1934 as the South Island Championships. The tournament was first played at the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club (f.1925), Nelson, Nelson Province, North Island, New Zealand. The tournament was played at other locations until 1978 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Tour.
The Florida State Open Championships also known as the Florida State Championships or Florida Open was an open international men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1910 as the Winter Championships of Florida. It was first organised by the Palm Beach Tennis Club and first played on clay courts adjacent to the Royal Poinciana Hotel, Palm Beach Florida, United States. The international tournament was played at other locations throughout its run until September 1972 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Tour.
The Philippines Open International Championships and later known as PHILTA International Championships or simply the Philippines Open was an international men's and women's clay then later court tennis tournament founded in 1918 as the Philippine Championships . It was first organised by the Philippine Tennis Association (PhilTA) and first played at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, Manila, Philippines. This international tournament was part of the ILTF World Circuit until 1978 when it was discontinued.
The New South Wales Hard Court Championships was a men's and women's open tennis tournament founded in 1915, and first held at Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. It was first organised by the Dubbo District Tennis Association in conjunction with the New South Wales Lawn Tennis Association and was played on clay courts. It was staged as part of ILTF Australasia Circuit a sub circuit of the ILTF World Circuit until 1972, then became part of the ILTF Independent Tour until 1984 and finally part of the Tennis Australia Circuit till 1988 when it was discontinued as a senior event.
The Klamovka Indoors was a men's and women's international tennis tournament founded in 1969. It was organised by the Czech Tennis Association and played on indoor carpet courts at Klamovka, Prague, Czechoslovakia. The event was part of the ILTF World Circuit when it was discontinued in 1972.
The Mashonaland Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1949 as the Mashonaland Lawn Tennis Championships. The tournament was played Salisbury, Mashonaland, Rhodesia, and ran annually until 1979 when it was discontinued as part of the ILTF Independent Circuit.
The Northern California Championships was a men's and women's international hard court tennis tournament founded in circa 1900 as the Championships of the Northern Counties of California a doubles event only. In 1902 a singles event was added to the schedule for the first time. It was first played at the Sacramento Lawn Tennis Club Sacramento, California, United States. It was also hosted at other locations throughout its run until 1974 when it was discontinued, and was known as the Northern California Sectional Championships at that point.
