Westwood is a suburb [1] of Leek in the Staffordshire Moorlands district of the county of Staffordshire, England. [2] It best known for being home to Westwood College. [3]
There was a farm at Westwood in the 1600s; by the early 18th century it was the property of William Joliffe of Caverswall Castle.
It passed on his death in 1709 to his daughter Lucy, wife of William Vane, 1st Viscount Vane.
In 1759, their son William Vane, 2nd Viscount Vane sold it to Mary Countess of Stamford; it was inherited by her son, the politician Booth Grey and then by his son Booth Grey, also a politician. [4]
The area around Westwood was once rural and owned by the former Westwood Hall, which was a country house. After the hall was converted originally into a school in 1921 and later Westwood College.
Since the industrial revolution, the land was redeveloped for housing for the workers of the local industries and new residents. It is now a primarily residential area of Leek. [5]
There are regular bus services that connect Westwood to Leek, Ashbourne, Buxton, Hanley, Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent. [6]
