Wheelchair basketball at the 2016 Summer Paralympics were held from 8 to 17 September at Carioca Arena 1 and the Rio Olympic Arena in Rio de Janeiro. [1]
In the men's tournament, twelve qualified nations are drawn into two groups, each consisting of six teams, where each team meets the other teams once. The four highest placed teams in each group advance to a knock-out round to decide the medals 4th to 8th places. The fifth-placed teams meet each other over the 9th and 10th places, and the sixth-placed teams meet each other over the 11th and 12th places.
In the women's tournament, ten qualified nations are drawn into two groups, each consisting of five teams, where each team meets the other teams once, just like the men's tournament. The four highest placed teams in each group advance to a knock-out round to decide the medals and 4th to 8th places. The fifth-placed teams meet each other over the 9th and 10th places.
Athletes are given an eight-level-score specific to wheelchair basketball, ranging from 1.0 to 4.5. Lower scores represented a higher degree of disability. The sum score of all players on the court cannot exceed 14. [2]
A National Paralympic Committee may enter up to one men's team with 12 players and up to one women's team with 12 players. The Brazil wheelchair basketball teams receive automatic qualification as hosts. Each of the four zones – Africa, Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe – is allocated a place. In addition, the top seven men's teams at the 2014 Incheon World Wheelchair Basketball Championship, and the top five women's teams at the 2014 Women's World Wheelchair Basketball Championship on earned a place for their zone. The former event was held on 1–12 July 2014, the latter on 19–29 June 2014. [3] The top seven teams at the men's competition were Australia, United States, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Korea and Great Britain. [4] The top five teams at the women's competition were Canada, Germany, Netherlands, United States and Great Britain. [5]

Basketball at the 2016 Summer Olympics was the nineteenth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and was held from 6 August to 21 August 2016. The preliminary and knockout round matches for men were played inside the Carioca Arena 1 in Olympic Park which seated up to 16,000 spectators. The matches for women were played at the Youth Arena. This marked the first time that the men's and women's Olympic tournaments were played in multiple/separate venues.
The handball tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from 6 to 21 August at the Future Arena in the Barra Olympic Park. The tournaments were won by Denmark in the men's competition and Russia for the women's tournament. The French teams for both competitions finished with the silver medal, and the bronze went to Germany and Norway, respectively.
EuroBasket 2017 was the 40th edition of the EuroBasket championship that was organized by FIBA Europe and held between 31 August and 17 September 2017. Beginning from 2017, the continental championships take place every four years with a similar system of qualification as for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The 2020 Summer Paralympics women's tournament in Tokyo began on 25 August and ended on the 4 September 2021. The matches were played at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza and the Ariake Arena. This was the fourteenth edition of the tournament since the tournament debut at the 1968 Summer Paralympics in Tel Aviv.
The 2023 IWBF Men's European Championship was the 26th edition of the European Wheelchair Basketball Championship. It took place from 11 to 19 August 2023 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
