Wheelchair fencing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics was held in Rio de Janeiro from 4 September to 8 September 2016. [1]

Classification

Fencers are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows fencers to compete against others with a similar level of function. Fencing has two ability classes, A and B, two genders and three weapons, epee, foil and sabre. Wheelchairs were anchored to the ground during competition.

Events

Twelve events will be competed at the games, six for individual men plus a team events, four for women (who do not take part in an individual sabre event) and a team event.

Aliaksandr Mikalayevich Buikevich is a Belarusian sabre fencer, European champion in 2008 and team silver medallist at the 2011 World Championships in Catania. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he reached the quarter-finals in the individual sabre, losing to Romania's Mihai Covaliu, while the Belarusian sabre team also reached the quarter-finals. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the men's sabre, but was defeated in the table of 16 by Romania's Rareș Dumitrescu. The Belarusian team again reached the quarter-finals. Buikevich qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as the only Belarusian fencer. In men's sabre in the table of 32 he defeated Joseph Polossifakis of Canada. He could not advance to the quarter-finals as in the table of 16 he lost to the eventual winner Áron Szilágyi of Hungary, who claimed his second consecutive gold medal at the Olympics individual men's sabre. Buikevich finished 12th in the event.

She has also won medals at European and World Championships. Krajnyák was nominated for the Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability in 2006.

Panagiotis Triantafyllou is a Greek wheelchair fencer who competes in épée and sabre. He represented Greece at the Summer Paralympics in 2012, 2016 and 2021. He won the silver medal in the men's sabre B event at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan, he won the bronze medal in the same event.

Andrii Demchuk is a Ukrainian wheelchair fencer who competes in épée, foil and sabre. He represented Ukraine at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and he won the gold medal in the men's sabre A event. He also represented Ukraine at the 2012 Summer Paralympics without winning a medal.

Feng Yanke is a Chinese wheelchair fencer. He represented China at the 2016 Summer Paralympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and he won the gold medal in the Men's Foil B event. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan, he won two gold medals in the Men's Sabre B and Men's Foil B event.

Olena Fedota is a Ukrainian épée and sabre wheelchair fencer. She won the silver medal in the women's sabre B event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan.

Éva Andrea Hajmási is a Hungarian wheelchair fencer. She represented Hungary at the 2016 Summer Paralympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and she won the silver medal in the women's team foil event. She also won the bronze medal in this event at the 2020 Summer Paralympics held in Tokyo, Japan.

Tam Chik Sum is a Hong Kong wheelchair fencer. He won the silver medal in the men's épée B event at the 2012 Summer Paralympics held in London, United Kingdom. He also competed in the men's sabre B event. He also competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Wheelchair fencing at the 2024 Summer Paralympics</span>

Wheelchair fencing at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris, France will be held between 3 and 7 September. There will be a total of sixteen events: eight events each for men and women. They will be categories A and B and will use épée, foil and sabre swords in individual events and épée and foil in team events.
