Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle, was a British Royal Air Force air officer. He is credited with single-handedly inventing the turbojet engine. A patent was submitted by Maxime Guillaume in 1921 for a similar invention; however, this was technically unfeasible at the time. Whittle's jet engines were developed some years earlier than those of Germany's Hans von Ohain who was the designer of the first operational turbojet engine.
The turbojet is an airbreathing jet engine, typically used in aircraft. It consists of a gas turbine with a propelling nozzle. The gas turbine has an air inlet, a compressor, a combustion chamber, and a turbine. The compressed air from the compressor is heated by the fuel in the combustion chamber and then allowed to expand through the turbine. The turbine exhaust is then expanded in the propelling nozzle where it is accelerated to high speed to provide thrust. Two engineers, Frank Whittle in the United Kingdom and Hans von Ohain in Germany, developed the concept independently into practical engines during the late 1930s.
John Woods Whittle, VC, DCM was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to members of the British and British Commonwealth armed forces. Whittle was serving as a sergeant in the First World War when he was decorated with the Victoria Cross following two separate actions against German forces during their retreat to the Hindenburg Line in 1917. In the latter action, he attacked a machine gun crew, killing the group and seizing the gun.

Alan Whittle is an English retired footballer who played as a forward or attacking midfielder. He made a total of 241 Football League appearances for Everton, Crystal Palace, Orient and A.F.C. Bournemouth, scoring 46 goals. He also spent a season with Iranian side Persepolis where he made 34 appearances and scored 16 goals.

Whittle-le-Woods is a civil parish in the Borough of Chorley, Lancashire, England. The parish contains 35 buildings that are recorded in the National Heritage List for England as designated listed buildings. Of these, one is listed at Grade II*, the middle grade, and the others are at Grade II, the lowest grade. The parish, which was formerly mainly rural, contains the village of Whittle-le-Woods, and agricultural land has been used for residential development in and around the village. Many of the listed buildings are, or originated as, farmhouses and farm buildings, some of which contain former loomshops that were used for the weaving industry. There are two former country houses and associated structures that are listed and which have been converted for other uses. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through the parish, as does the abandoned southern section of the Lancaster Canal; there are a number of listed structures associated with both of these. Also in the parish, and listed, are two churches and associated structures, smaller houses and cottages, a row of almshouses, a bridge over the River Lostock, a gun emplacement, and a public house.
