The World Fencing Championships is an annual competition in fencing organized by the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime. Contestants may participate in foil, épée, and sabre events.
The men's foil was a competition in fencing at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. A total of 36 men from 20 nations competed in this event. Nations had been limited to three fencers each since 1928. Competition took place in the Fencing Hall at the Helliniko Olympic Complex on August 16. The event was won by Brice Guyart of France, the nation's ninth victory in the men's foil. Italy took the other two medals, with Salvatore Sanzo earning silver and Andrea Cassarà winning the bronze medal match.
Stefano Cerioni is an Italian foil fencer, Olympic team champion in 1984, Olympic champion in 1988 and World team champion in 1985 and 1994. He became a fencing master, then a director of foil, first for Italy, then for Russia, then again for Italy.

The silver medal went to Matthias Behr, West Germany's first medal in the event and the first medal for any German athlete since 1928. France's five-Games podium streak ended.

Elvis Gregory earned Cuba's first medal in the event in 88 years with his bronze.
Larisa Viktorovna Korobeynikova is a Russian right-handed foil fencer, 2021 team Olympic champion, 2021 individual Olympic bronze medalist, three-time team world champion and two-time team European champion. She received the Medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" I class in 2012.
Azza Besbes is a Tunisian sabre fencer, five-time African champion. She took part in the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, finishing 7th, 9th and 5th respectively.

Martina Favaretto is an Italian fencer. She won one of the bronze medals in the women's foil event at the 2023 World Fencing Championships held in Milan, Italy. She won the silver medal in her event at the 2023 European Fencing Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Favaretto is also a gold medalist in the women's team foil event at the 2022 World Fencing Championships and the 2022 European Fencing Championships.
