Xing: The Land Beyond is an adventure game by White Lotus Interactive, which was released on September 21, 2017 for Microsoft Windows. The game has full VR support for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. [5] A PlayStation VR version was released on February 12, 2019. [6]

Production

Conception of the game began back in 2012, when John Torkington and Koriel Kruer designed a level for a Level Design class with the theme "atmosphere"; their professor said anyone who had their work in the top ten in the IEEE competition would receive an A. After learning Unreal 3 editor using UDK (Unreal Development Kit), they designed a prototype, which was the first state of what would eventually become Xing. [7] Development for the Oculus Rift began in June 2013. [8] In 2014 the development team migrated their content to the recently released Unreal Engine 4. Their favorite puzzles involved the manipulation of the landscape and weather in order to progress, and they wanted to allow the player to solve puzzles in their own way. [9]

The developers admitted in January 2018 that the sales were poor, which they put down to the overly saturated Steam market, most of the buzz happening two years before during the Kickstarter campaign, and the lack of dedicated marketing team. [10]

Plot and gameplay

While the player is dead, in death they encounter a journey through a series of mysterious lands. [11]

Gameplay is in the form of a Myst-clone exploration game. [11]

Reception

Adventure Gamers praised the 3D graphics and the intriguing ending. [12]

The game won the Intel Developer Showcase award for best overall game. [10]

Oculus Rift is a discontinued line of virtual reality headsets developed and manufactured by Oculus VR, a virtual reality company founded by Palmer Luckey that is widely credited with reviving the virtual reality industry. It was the first virtual reality headset to provide a realistic experience at an accessible price, utilizing novel technology to increase quality and reduce cost by orders of magnitude compared to earlier systems. Superhot is an independent first-person shooter (FPS) video game developed and published by Superhot Team. Though the game follows traditional first-person shooter gameplay mechanics, with the player attempting to take out enemy targets using guns and other weapons, time within the game progresses at normal speed only when the player moves; this creates the opportunity for the player to assess their situation in slow motion and respond appropriately, making the gameplay similar to strategy video games. The game is presented in a minimalist art style, with enemies in red and weapons in black, in contrast to the otherwise white and grey environment.

Eve: Valkyrie was a multiplayer dogfighting shooter game set in the Eve Online universe that was designed to use virtual reality headset technology. Originally launched for Microsoft Windows for use with the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, CCP Games had announced they plan to enable cross-platform play between the three major VR systems: the Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive, and the PlayStation VR. Released in March 2016, the game had two game mode options: Chronicles could be played in single player, while Combat allowed eight by eight combat PvP missions. Reviews generally criticized the limited plot and limitations of single player mode, although the described "arcade experience" was praised for having intuitive controls and "exhilarating" dogfighting features, with PC Powerplay dubbing it "arguably the best VR experience currently available for the [Oculus Rift] platform."

The player plays as Agent Epsilon, who crash lands on one of Saturn's moons, Rhea, and goes to explore a nearby military base belonging to the fictional People's Republic of Volgravia. The game received positive reviews from critics, who praised the atmosphere of the environments, but criticized some of the puzzles as being confusing. Red Matter released on May 24, 2018 for Oculus Rift, with versions for the HTC Vive, Oculus Quest, and PlayStation VR launching in November 2018, December 2018, and August 2019, respectively. A sequel to Moss, the game follows Quill as she ventures though the land to battle the arcane to save the land of Moss. Moss: Book II was released in March 2022 for PlayStation 4 via PlayStation VR before receiving Meta Quest 2 and Windows ports later that year. A PlayStation 5 version via PlayStation VR2 was released in February 2023.
