xoa is a studio album/compilation album [4] [5] [6] by American singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, released in 2014 on Wilderland Records, on 30 September in the US and October the 6th in the UK.

Background

The album was recorded with Gary Paczosa in Nashville and includes a selection of new songs and re-recorded tracks from Mitchell's back catalogue. The record saw a limited release, and was meant as a thank you to fans, Anaïs saying "if the title were longer, it would be 'dear audience, thank you for everything'". [7] "Any Way the Wind Blows" was later featured in the musical adaptation of her fourth studio album Hadestown .

It was recorded at The Bristmill in Bristol, Vermont and produced by Michael Chorney. In December 2012, the song 'Of a Friday Night' was played as the Weather on episode 12 of Welcome to Night Vale, "The Candidate", but was mislabeled as 'The Brightness'. "Hades and Persephone" was included in Mitchell's musical Hadestown, based on her studio album of the same name and retitled "How Long?"

The concept album, which became the basis for the stage musical of the same name, follows a variation on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, where Orpheus must embark on a quest to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld. It has been advertised as a "folk opera". Several of the songs feature singers other than Mitchell, including Justin Vernon, Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Ben Knox Miller and Tanya, Petra and Rachel Haden.

Hadestown is a sung-through musical with music, lyrics, and book by Anaïs Mitchell. It tells a version of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young girl looking for something to eat, goes to work in a hellish industrial version of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the cold, and her poor singer-songwriter lover Orpheus comes to rescue her.

The musical Hadestown, written by American singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and based on her 2010 studio album of the same name, has had two official cast recordings. In addition, various songs from Hadestown were re-recorded by Mitchell for her 2014 studio album Xoa, including the musical's opening number "Anyway the Wind Blows" which had not appeared on the original concept album. The song "Why We Build the Wall" has been covered by a variety of artists, including English singer-songwriter Billy Bragg for his 2017 EP Bridges Not Walls, Ben Fisher, Ben Dunham, Lilli Lewis, and Robert Neustadt.
