The York School (TYS) is a gender inclusive JK to Grade 12 independent school located in Toronto, Ontario. The York School was founded in 1965 and is the first school in Canada accredited to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) from Junior Kindergarten (JK) to university entrance (Grade 12).
In 1965, Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots established The York School as a nursery school. In 1978, the school added a toddler program as well as an elementary school. The first Grade 8 class graduated in 1985. The Senior School was founded in 1995 with the addition of a Grade 9 class.
In the late 1990s, 1320 Yonge Street was purchased through the "Home of Our Own" capital campaign. In September 2010, The York School opened a second campus at 1639 Yonge Street, which houses the Junior School (JK-Grade 5).
Goodwin-Zeibots remained the Head of School until retiring in the spring of 2006. She was succeeded by Ezio Crescenzi. [1] In 2011, Conor Jones became Head of School.
The location at 1320 Yonge Street houses the Middle and Senior School campus for Grades 6-12. In 2015, The York School celebrated its 50th anniversary and announced a Capital Campaign to raise $5 million for the renovation of the Middle and Senior School campus at 1320 Yonge Street. The renovation is now complete. [2]
In April 2019, Conor Jones resigned as head of school and Struan Robertson stepped in as interim head of school until December 2019, when he was appointed as full-time head of school.
The York School is an IB World School and was the first in Canada to offer all three levels of the International Baccalaureate Programme (Primary Years Programme K-5, Middle Years Programme 6-10 and Diploma Programme 11-12),also known as the IB Continuum. [3]
The school also offers a variety of outdoor education programmes and excursions both locally and internationally.
The York School has two campuses in midtown Toronto, which are both situated on Yonge Street near St. Clair Avenue. The JK–Grade 5 students are located at 1639 Yonge Street, while Grades 6–12 are at 1320 Yonge Street, on the corner of Farnham Avenue.
The Principal of the Junior School is Sara Sankari. The Principal of the Middle School is Helen Gin. The Principal of the Senior School is David Hamilton. The Head of School is Struan Robertson.
The York School offers an experiential program for Grade 9 students called ICE (Integrated Canadian Experience), exploring Canadian history, geography, civics and literature and what it means to be Canadian. All Grade 9 students participate in this intensive programme and produce a documentary to reflect on their learning at the end of the year. The documentary is screened by parents and educators.
The York School sends a group of Grade 11 student volunteers to the Global Pathways School in India, which was co-founded by Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots.
There is a one-week excursion for all students grade 6 through 10 called Challenge Week where students travel somewhere in Canada or the United States and do a week of learning about a specific subject.
The school's Gladiator Athletics program is a part of the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association. [4]
Athletic Programs at the school include basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, track and field, ultimate frisbee, squash, curling and swimming.
The York School has won more than 35 CISAA Championships since 2012, most recently in Alpine Skiing. They also have an OFSAA basketball appearance (in 2023).
Approximately 20% of The York School's families are international. The school has provided support for students and families moving from abroad. [5]
As of 2022/2023, tuition is $35,000 for JK - Grade 12. There is a $300 Application Fee and an $8,000 one-time fee upon acceptance of an offer of admission to secure a place for a new student. [6]
The American School of Antananarivo (ASA) is an English-language international school in Antananarivo, Madagascar for students from Pre-Kindergarten through High School. It provides an international education to around 260 students aged 3 to 18 from over 30 countries. Its campus is located in the Le Park compound in Alarobia, about 4.6 km from the city center.
ACS International Schools is a group of four independent schools catering for local and international families - three in England and one in Qatar. Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS) is an independent, co-ed, university preparatory day school in Victoria and Oak Bay, British Columbia, Canada. It was formed in 1986 with the amalgamation of Glenlyon School and Norfolk House. The school offers instruction from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. The school offers the International Baccalaureate at all three levels: the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and, at the high school level, offers the IB Diploma Programme. Munich International School (MIS) is a private coeducational international school located in Starnberg, south of Munich, Germany. MIS teaches students from EC to grade 12. Students travel from an area around Munich to attend the school, with the help of a school bus network that reaches into the area around Munich, even all the way to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The School is divided into three groups: Junior, Middle, and Senior School.

The International School of Indiana (ISI) is an independent private school in Indianapolis, Indiana. The school was founded in 1994. ISI offers classes from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade with more than 600 students. ISI is recognized as an IB World School, offering immersion programs for its students in the languages of Spanish, French, and Mandarin Chinese. Students can also begin learning a third language in Grade 6.
Victoria Park Collegiate Institute ; formerly Victoria Park Secondary School, is a collegiate institute in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located south of York Mills Road and west of Victoria Park Ave. in the district of North York. It is the first publicly funded school in Ontario to host the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme since July 1987, the programme is taught in English. The school is open to male and female students. Some feeder schools include Milne Valley Middle School and Donview Middle School. The student population of Victoria Park Collegiate Institute is diverse, with a component of English as Second Language students.
Toronto Montessori Schools, now rebranded to "TMS School", is one of the oldest Montessori schools in Canada. Founded by Helma Trass in 1961, it still remains the most well-known Montessori school in Ontario. The school moved to Richmond Hill from Toronto in 1964. The school's Bayview Campus and the Elgin Mills Campus are located in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. The Head of School is currently Mr. Andrew Cross. The school's first location was in Toronto, which is why, despite being located now in Richmond Hill, it maintained its name 'Toronto Montessori Schools'.
Bayview Secondary School, initially known as Bayview High School is a grade 9–12, 2-semester secondary school operated by the York Region District School Board. It is located just north of the northeast corner of Bayview Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. Bayview S.S. was officially opened on March 19, 1961.
Southbank International School is a co-educational private school located in the City of Westminster, Kensington and Hampstead, London, England. It is an international school for 3 to 18-year olds, from early childhood to Key Stage 5. It has three campuses serving the educational needs of the international community in central London and surrounding areas.
Crawford Adventist Academy is a K– grade 12 Adventist private day-school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The school is divided into two sections, the elementary, which consists of grades JK-8, and the high school, which consistis of grades 9-12. The campus is located next to the 1000+ member Willowdale Adventist Church, and the previously SDA owned North York General Hospital Branson Site. Léman Manhattan Preparatory School is a private school located in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City. The school serves students from early childhood through 12th grade at two campuses in Lower Manhattan. Founded as Claremont Preparatory School in 2005, it was renamed in 2015.
The Leo Baeck Day School is a Greater Toronto Area Reform Jewish day school in Ontario, Canada composed of around nine hundred students from Nursery to Grade Eight. Named in honour of Rabbi Leo Baeck, it has one campus in Toronto and formerly one campus in Vaughan.
Sunnybrook School (SBS) is a coeducational, private elementary school offering Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6, with one class per grade. Founded in 1952 as one of Toronto's first Preschools, Sunnybrook is located on a residential street in North Toronto, specifically in the Mount Pleasant West area of Davisville Village west of Bayview Avenue. Sunnybrook School has been family-run for over 60 years. In April 1999, Sunnybrook School became Canada's first English speaking school to implement the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. The European International School Ho Chi Minh City (EIS) is an international day school for children from 2 to 18 years of age in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The school is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS). EIS's student body is diverse, with students coming from more than 40 different countries. It is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.
Abu Dhabi International Private School is a private international school licensed by the Ministry of Education located in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The school offers an American curriculum, as well as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs.
