Yoshito Sengoku (仙谷由人,Sengoku Yoshito,born January 15,1946 –October 11,2018) was a Japanese politician serving in the House of Representatives in the Diet (national legislature) as a member of the Democratic Party of Japan.
He was born in Tokushima,Tokushima prefecture. While studying in the University of Tokyo,he passed the bar exam and therefore dropped out of the university. He was elected for the first time in 1990 as a member of the Japan Socialist Party.
Viewed as a close ally of Prime Minister Naoto Kan,the opposition Liberal Democratic Party has labeled Sengoku as the "second" Prime Minister of the Kan cabinet. Sengoku denies that he wields any extraordinary influence in the government and praised Kan as a "strong leader". [1]
In January 2011,he was ousted from his position as a top cabinet member due to swelling pressure from the opposition,namely the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito Party,to execute cabinet reform. Sengoku was replaced by Yukio Edano,who was expected to yield much influence over Kan as a protégéof Sengoku.
In March 2011,Prime Minister Naoto Kan appointed Sengoku as Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary. [2]

The 14th Democratic Party of Japan leadership election was held on 4 June 2010 after the incumbent party President Yukio Hatoyama resigned after failing to fulfil a promise to the voters regarding the United States Forces Japan's bases in Okinawa Prefecture;his resignation was reportedly an attempt to improve the DPJ's chances in the upcoming House of Councillors election in July 2010. Also incumbent party Secretary-General IchirōOzawa resigned on 4 June 2010 due to many recent scandals. Finance Minister Naoto Kan was widely expected to succeed Hatoyama,and a new government was expected to be formed on 7 June 2010. On 3 June 2010 Shinji Tarutoko declared his candidacy to run against Naoto Kan for the leadership. Apart from these two,Transport Minister Seiji Maehara and Foreign Affairs Minister Katsuya Okada were also seen as contenders,but both backed Kan. Kan defeated Tarutoko by a vote of 291–129 with 2 invalid ballots was elected president of DPJ.
The 2011 Democratic Party of Japan leadership election took place on August 29,2011. The election chose Yoshihiko Noda as the successor to Naoto Kan as president of the Democratic Party (Minshutō) of Japan. The designation of the new party president as prime minister in the Diet took place on August 30;Kan remained as acting prime minister until his successor's formal appointment ceremony with the Emperor. In June 2011,Kan had announced to resign once three conditions have been met:passage of the second extra budget for fiscal 2011,passage of a bill to promote the use renewable energy and passage of a bill to issue new debt covering bonds. The extra budget was passed in July;after an agreement with the opposition was struck on reforming the child allowance introduced by the Democratic Party,the renewable energies bill and the bond ceiling increase passed through the Diet on August 26,2011.
