Zachary Alley is an American football coach who is currently the Assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at West Virginia. Alley won two national championships as a graduate assistant at Clemson University.

Coaching career

Clemson

After graduating from Charlotte Country Day School, where he played on both the defensive and offensive lines, Alley went to Clemson. [1] Alley began his coaching career as a student assistant his freshman year in 2011 and worked as an assistant his entire time as a student at Clemson. Once he graduated he became a graduate assistant from 2015 to 2018, [2] where he won two national championships under Dabo Swinney.

Boise State

A month after he was signed to be the nickels coach for the Charlotte 49ers, [3] Alley became the inside linebackers coach for the Broncos for the 2019 season. [2] For the 2020 season he coached the outside linebackers while also being the co-special teams coordinator. [4] During the season Alley contracted COVID-19. [5] [6] [7]

ULM

Under the recommendation of Brent Venables, Alley was hired by Terry Bowden to be the defensive coordinator for the Warhawks in 2021. [8] [9] [10] Only being 27 years old he was the youngest FBS coordinator.

Jacksonville State

When Rich Rodriguez was hired as the new head coach at Jacksonville State, after serving as the offensive coordinator at Louisiana-Monroe, he brought Alley with him as his defensive coordinator. [11] In 2022, Jacksonville State had the #2 best overall defense in the FCS and top 25 in least points allowed per game, and concluded the season claiming the ASUN champion. The following season in the FBS, Jacksonville State finished 9-4, winning the school's first bowl game in school history. Jacksonville State's defense finished 15th in rushing defense, and 18th in least TDs allowed in the nation. [12]

Oklahoma

In January 2024, the Oklahoma Sooners announced Zac Alley as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. [13] His first year he helped turn around Oklahoma's defense from the #99th total team defense in 2023 to a top 20-total defense in the country for 2024 season. Oklahoma's 2024 defense finished amongst the top in the country: 3rd in defensive touchdowns, 5th in fumbles recovered, 10th in team tackles for loss, 11th in first-down defense, 23rd in rushing defense, 25th in sacks and 30th in scoring defense. West Virginia

On December 29, 2024, West Virginia announced Zac Alley as the new defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, reuniting him with head coach Rich Rodriguez. [16]

Brent Guy is an American college football coach and former player. Guy served as the defensive coordinator for Florida International University. Guy also served as head football coach at Utah State University from 2005 to 2008, compiling an overall record of nine wins and 38 losses.

Reginald Wayne Herring is an American football coach and former player and most recently the linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). A former linebacker at Florida State University, he began his coaching career in 1981. He has now coached for 36 years across college and the NFL. Herring arrived in Denver to coach linebackers in 2015 after previous stops in the league with Chicago (2014), Houston and Dallas (2008–10). Herring has coached nine linebackers who have made Pro Bowl appearances during their careers, including defensive end Mario Williams (4), outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware, (9)Connor Barwin (1), and inside linebackers Zach Thomas (7), Keith Brooking (5), Lance Briggs (7), Brian Cushing (1), Sean Lee (2) and DeMeco Ryans (2). Herring also served as the interim head football coach for the University of Arkansas in the 2008 Cotton Bowl Classic.

Thomas Brent Venables is an American college football coach who is the head football coach at the University of Oklahoma, a position he has held since the 2022 season. Venables served as the associate head coach, defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach at Clemson University from 2012 to 2021. He was awarded the Broyles Award in 2016.

Victor Mick Fangio is an American football coach who serves as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL). Fangio also recently served as the head coach of the Denver Broncos. Thomas Raymond Mason is an American football coach and former player. He served as the interim head football coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU) for the final 10 games of the 2014 season upon the resignation of June Jones, compiling a record of 1–9. Before that, he had been SMU's defensive coordinator since 2008. Mason also served as the interim head football coach at Boise State University for the first ten games of the 1996 season, compiling a record of 1–9.

Scott Gregory Hazelton is an American football coach who is currently a special assistant to the head coach at the University of Texas at Austin. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Michigan State University. Hazelton was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Kansas State University in 2019 before moving to Michigan State. Erik Chinander is an American football coach. He is currently the defensive coordinator at Boise State University.

Brandon Hall is an American football coach who is currently the safeties coach at the University of Oklahoma. He was previously the coordinator at Broken Arrow High School in Oklahoma, Central Oklahoma, Jacksonville State, and Troy.

Blake Baker is an American college football coach. He is the defensive coordinator for Louisiana State University, a position he has held since 2024. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Miami (FL), Louisiana Tech, and Missouri, as well as previously being the linebackers coach at LSU.

David Blackwell is an American football coach who is currently the defensive tackles coach at the University of Missouri, a position he has held since 2023. He was previously the defensive coordinator at Old Dominion University and East Carolina University, serving as the interim head coach for the latter in 2018 after the termination of Scottie Montgomery and the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech University from 2020 to 2021.

Andrew Avalos is an American college football coach and former player. He is the defensive coordinator for Texas Christian University. He previously worked as an assistant at schools including Boise State University and Oregon before returning to Boise State as head coach.

Wesley Goodwin is an American football coach who most recently served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Clemson University. He previously served as an assistant coach for the Arizona Cardinals and at Mississippi State University.

Ryan Carter is an American football coach and former cornerback, who is currently a defensive graduate assistant on the Oklahoma Sooners coaching staff. He played college football at Clemson, including as a starting cornerback on the Tigers’ 2016 national championship team. In 2018, he signed with the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League as an undrafted free agent out of college. From 2019–2021, he played cornerback for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL). In 2022, he joined his former Clemson defensive coordinator and current Oklahoma head football coach Brent Venables' inaugural Sooners coaching staff as a defensive graduate assistant.
