Zeal & Ardor is the third studio album by avant-garde metal artist Zeal & Ardor, released on 11 February 2022. [8] [9]
Lead singer Manuel Gagneux described the album, stating:
— Lyrically, it's a continuation of the alternate history narrative we have going on—what if American slaves had turned to Satan instead of God?—Where Devil Is Fine was about life in captivity and Stranger Fruit was about the escape this record is about the many things that come after. Being on the run, clandestine ruminations and grand plan." [10]
Gagneux describes the opening track, "Zeal & Ardor" as "start(ing) with a broody synthesizer and then one element after the other comes in. By the end, you should be in the Zeal & Ardor world." [2] Lead single "Run" is described as "non-stop aggressive" [2] and features a music video described as "disturbing" set in a psychiatric hospital, Gagneux described the video stating "Garrick Lauterbach, who directed it and I share a fascination with deep dreams and AI. Being able to weave it into a narrative of mental diaspora was an incredible treat." [11] "Death to the Holy" has elements of blues & a piano, features a "metalcore type breakdown" and "evil synthziers", with Gagneux describing it as "the most Zeal & Ardor song on the record." [2]
"Emersion" features elements of post-rock and a contrasting "relax(ing) hip hop beat" alongside black metal. [2] "Golden Liar" is described by Gagneux as "a slow burn. Rather than using harsh tones to convey heaviness, it uses lyrics and atmosphere to convey weight. It's both smoke and fire." [6] The song's atmospheric elements were inspired by Ennio Morricone. [2] A music video was released, directed by Max Carlo Kohal. [12] "Erase" was created with the intention to "confuse you in the most pleasant way possible". [13] The song features elements of progressive rock. [2]
"Bow" features elements of soul music, [4] Gagneux described it as "tak[ing] out established musical themes and plac[ing] them into a completely different background. It's an amalgam of things bestowing bad luck demanding you to join it." [4] Inspired by industrial and electronic music, the track was written to be "awe-inspiring" and "grandiose". [2] "Feed the Machine" was inspired by Ministry, and originally featured programmed drums that drummer Marco Von Allmen stated were too fast to be able to perform before they were slowed down. [2] "I Caught You" has nu-metal influences, particularly Deftones. [2] "Church Burns" features "the most potentially controversial lyrics of the album... in the most pop-adjacent song we have." [2] Gagneux described the breakdown as inspired by ZZ Top. [2]
"Götterdämmerung", named after a movement in a Richard Wagner opera, [2] is sung mostly in German and described by Gagneux as "our most bare bones song yet. No gimmicks, no frills, no distractions, just rage." [5] Further explaining, Gagneux stated "Wagner was heavily used by not-so-great people in the '30s and '40s in Germany. So I wanted to reappropriate and reclaim Wagner, even though he himself was a huge dick, too—but dude wrote brilliant music." [2] "Hold Your Head Low" is an older song that had been played live dating back to 2017, with influences from Opeth. [2] "J-M-B" features jazz chords put to metal, and stands for "Jazz Metal Blues". [2] Closing track "A-H-I-L" is an atmospheric somber track, with Gagneux stating "it's like that hopeless, drab rainy day in Norway, like 'my father just got killed by a pack of wolves' kind of vibe. I just wanted to try and emulate that with synthesizers, as far removed from actual black metal as possible. [2]

The album received positive critical reviews. Kerrang! stated "Industrial rhythms, gently plucked guitars and synthy soundscapes may haunt these realms, but the blood and fire reverberating through history's dark corridors remains. Indeed, there are moments on this self-titled third album which find Zeal & Ardor at their heaviest-hitting yet, even as their musical singularity boasts definite crossover appeal." [1] Writing for The Line of Best Fit , John Amen gave the album a 7/10 rating and concluded, "Zeal & Ardor continue to assert their versatility, though the expression of unadulterated rage – toward earthly life, perhaps toward existence itself – has become their primary mission. They've committed to a fertile template, even if it's a fairly well-trampled one." [16]

Metalcore is a broadly defined fusion genre combining elements of extreme metal and hardcore punk, that originated in the late 1980s. Metalcore is noted for its use of breakdowns, which are slow, intense passages conducive to moshing, while other defining instrumentation includes heavy and percussive pedal point guitar riffs and double bass drumming. Vocalists in the genre typically perform screaming; more popular bands often combine this with the use of standard singing, usually during the bridge or chorus of a song. However, the death growl is also a popular technique within the genre.
"Change (In the House of Flies)", often referred to as "Change", is a song by American alternative metal band Deftones, released as the first single from their third album, White Pony, in May 2000. The song was released as the lead single from the album on 11 January 2013, reaching number 82 on the UK Singles Chart and number 2 on the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart.
I Prevail is an American rock band formed in Southfield, Michigan, in 2013. They released their debut EP Heart vs. Mind (2014) and rose to popularity from releasing a metal cover of Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" as a single, which eventually was certified platinum in the US. The band has since released three studio albums: Lifelines (2016), Trauma (2019), and True Power (2022). The band found success with their original material as well, with the singles "Breaking Down" and "Hurricane" performing well on rock radio, the single "Bow Down" being nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2019, and Trauma being nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album the same year.
Zeal & Ardor is a Swiss avant-garde metal band started and led by Manuel Gagneux, a Swiss-American musician who had previously created a chamber pop project called Birdmask. Formed in 2013, the band mixes sounds of African-American spirituals with black metal.
Stranger Fruit is the second studio album by avant-garde metal band Zeal & Ardor. It was released on 8 June 2018, through MVKA records. It is Zeal & Ardor's first release as a full band, previous releases were entirely composed by singer Manuel Gagneux, although Stranger Fruit only features drummer Marco Von Allmen from the full band alongside Gagneux.
Devil Is Fine is the debut studio album by Swiss avant-garde metal musician Manuel Gagneux, under his alias Zeal & Ardor. Initially released independently in April 2016, it was re-released by MVKA records on March 27, 2017. The album received critical acclaim, and was included on many publications' year-end best of lists.
We Are Not Your Kind is the sixth studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. Recorded at EastWest Studios in Hollywood, California with co-producer Greg Fidelman, it was released on August 9, 2019, by Roadrunner Records. The title is taken from a lyric in the song "All Out Life", which was released as a standalone single in 2018 and features as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the album. We Are Not Your Kind is the only Slipknot album to be recorded as an eight-member band, as their former percussionist Chris Fehn was fired from the band in March 2019 after suing the group for alleged unpaid royalties.
"Solway Firth" is a song by American heavy metal band Slipknot. Produced by Greg Fidelman, it was released on July 22, 2019, as the second single from their sixth album, We Are Not Your Kind. The song's music video was directed by the band's percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan and features footage from the Amazon Prime Video series The Boys. The track peaked at number 8 on the US Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart and number 14 on the UK Rock & Metal Singles Chart.
Sleep Token are a British metal band formed in London in 2016 with members remaining anonymous by wearing masks. After self-releasing their debut EP One in 2016, the band signed with Basick Records and issued a follow-up EP, Two, the next year. The group signed with Spinefarm Records and released their first full-length album Sundowning in 2019, which was followed in 2021 by This Place Will Become Your Tomb. A third album, Take Me Back to Eden, was released in May 2023.
Death by Rock and Roll is the fourth studio album by American rock band the Pretty Reckless, released on February 12, 2021. It is the band's first album released with their new label, Fearless Records, and is also the band's first album since the death of their long-time producer, Kato Khandwala in 2018. The album was produced by Jonathan Wyman, vocalist Taylor Momsen, and guitarist Ben Phillips, along with additional production done by Nate Yacchichino. The album was preceded by two singles: "Death by Rock and Roll" and "And So It Went" featuring Tom Morello. Live in London is the first live release by avant-garde metal band Zeal & Ardor. Released 22 March 2019, the performance captured was from a 2 December 2018 show at Electric Ballroom in London. The live album features three non-album tracks performed by the band as part of their setlist. Vocalist Manuel Gagneux stated of the album "Since we're really proud of our performance, we are releasing the entire show consisting of our entire catalogue of songs." Gagneux also stated the reason for the live album was to capture the live shows that were "more energetic and way more aggressive" than the recorded material.
