Chandipur, is a resort town in Balasore District, Odisha, India. The town is located on the shore of Bay of Bengal and is approximately 16 kilometers from the Balasore Railway Station. Chandipur beach is unique in a way that the water recedes up to 5 kilometers during the ebb tide. Due to its unique circumstances, the beach supports biodiversity. Horseshoe crab is also found here on the beach towards Mirzapur, the nearby fishing market and community at the confluence of the Budhabalanga River (Balaramgadi). It is a suitable picnic spot. One of Odisha Tourism's Panthanivas (guest house) is situated here.

Geography

Chandipur is located at 21°28′N87°01′E / 21.47°N 87.02°E / 21.47; 87.02 . [1] It has an average elevation of 3 m (9.8 ft). This town is 51.330 acres (0.20773 km2) in size. [2] Chandipur beach can be submerged at high tide.

Normal Indian weather

Summer temperatures range 25–40 degrees Celsius, while the Winter range is 17–27 degree Celsius. Tourism season is typically November to March.

Chandipur is also the location of the Indian Strategic Forces Command's Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island, formerly known as Wheeler Island. A number of Indian missiles have been tested and launched from the ITR, including nuclear-capable Prithvi, Agni and Shaurya [3] ballistic missiles, as well as Akash and Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles. [4]

Transport

Chandipur can be reached by travelling up to Baleswar by rail or road and then thereafter catching a bus, auto or taxi. Road access to Baleswar is via National Highway 16 (NH-16). Chandipur sea beach is 16 km from Balasore railway station. [5]

Dr. Abdul Kalam Island, formerly known as Wheeler Island, is an island off the coast of Odisha, India, approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) east of the state capital Bhubaneswar. The island was originally named after English commandant Lieutenant Hugh Wheeler. On 4 September 2015, the island was renamed to honour the late Indian president, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The Integrated Test Range missile testing facility is located on the island, and serves as the test facility for most of India's missiles such as the Akash, Agni, Astra, BrahMos, Nirbhay, Prahaar, Prithvi, Shaurya Missile, Advanced Air Defence, Prithvi Air Defence, SMART missile and ASAT missiles.

The Indian Ballistic Missile Defence Programme is an initiative to develop and deploy a multi-layered ballistic missile defence system to protect India from ballistic missile attacks. It was launched in 2000 after Kargil War by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Testing was carried out and continuing as of 2006, and the system was expected to be operational four years from then according to the head of the country's missiles development programme, Vijay Kumar Saraswat.

Shaurya is a canister-launched hypersonic surface-to-surface tactical missile developed by the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for use by the Indian Armed Forces. The Vertical Launch – Short Range Surface to Air Missile, or VL-SRSAM is a quick reaction surface-to-air missile developed by the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). During mid-course flight, the missile uses fibre-optic gyroscope based inertial guidance mechanism while in terminal phase uses active radar homing. With lock on before launch (LOBL) and lock on after launch (LOAL) capability, the missile receives mid-course update via datalink. VL-SRSAM intended to replace older Barak 1 surface to air missile system onboard Indian Navy warships. It will also be used as short range air defence system for Indian Air Force.

The Very Short Range Air Defence System, or VSHORADS, is a fourth generation, man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI),a research lab under Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), located in Hyderabad. Multiple DRDO laboratories along with Indian Industry Partners are participating in the project. It is designed for anti-aircraft warfare and neutralising low altitude aerial threats at short ranges.
