Charleston Road Registry Inc. [1] [2] (CRR [3] ), doing business as Google Registry, [4] is a wholly owned subsidiary of Google LLC. It is the domain name registry that Google uses to handle the top-level domains (TLDs) that they own.

The company was founded on February 8, 2012. [1] The company was founded due to requirements by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), stating that domain name registries and domain name registrars must be separate legal entities. [3]

Google Domains was a domain name registrar and domain management service operated by Google. It was launched in 2014 and continued to operate, mostly as a beta service, until most of its assets were acquired by Squarespace on September 7, 2023. The sale included databases of registered domains, customer accounts, and the registry accreditation. However, Google retained control over its generic Top-Level Domains like .app, .dev, .gle, .google, .goog, .youtube, .zip, and many others.

The Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) is a computer network communications protocol standardized by a working group at the Internet Engineering Task Force in 2015, after experimental developments and thorough discussions. It is a successor to the WHOIS protocol, used to look up relevant registration data from such Internet resources as domain names, IP addresses, and autonomous system numbers.
