The 17th Empire Awards ceremony (officially known as the Jameson Empire Awards), presented by the British film magazine Empire, honoured the best films of 2011 and took place on 25 March 2012 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, England. [1] [2] During the ceremony, the Empire presented Empire Awards in 13 categories as well as three honorary awards. The awards for The Art of 3D, the new Best Male Newcomer and Best Female Newcomer (replacing the Best Newcomer award) and the honorary Empire Legend Award were first introduced this year. English Radio DJ Lauren Laverne and Empire magazine's news editor Chris Hewitt co-hosted the show, marking the first time for each and the first time the show was co-hosted. [1] The awards were sponsored by Jameson Irish Whiskey for the fourth consecutive year. [1]

In related events, Empire and Jameson Irish Whiskey held the 3rd Done In 60 Seconds Competition Global Final on March 23, 2012 [3] at the London Film Museum, London, England. [3] The team of judges consisted of Empire editor-in-chief Mark Dinning, [4] Sky Movies Premiere English presenter Alex Zane, [4] Irish actor and comedian Chris O'Dowd [4] and English director Gareth Edwards, [4] which selected from a shortlist of 28 nominees [4] the five Done In 60 Seconds Award finalists that were invited to the Empire Awards where the winner was announced. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy won the most awards with three, including Best British Film. Other winners included Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 and Thor with two awards and Kill List , Like Crazy , The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn , The Inbetweeners Movie , and Tyrannosaur with one. Michael Fassbender received the Empire Hero Award, Ron Howard received the Empire Inspiration Award and Tim Burton received the Empire Legend Award. Indira Suleimenova from Kazakhstan won the Done In 60 Seconds Award for her 60-second film version of Black Swan .

The Done In 60 Seconds Award is an award presented annually by the British film magazine Empire to the winner of that year's Done In 60 Seconds Competition, in which participants recreate a known film in 60-seconds. The Done In 60 Seconds Award was first introduced at the 13th Empire Awards in 2008, with Nick Jesper from the United Kingdom receiving the award for his 60-second version of Titanic. The competition was open for its first two years only to entries from the United Kingdom and has since become an international competition with each participating country selecting its own local winner which then joins the global shortlist of films, from which a panel of judges selects the global winner.

Along with the annual Empire Awards that were presented by Empire magazine for best in acting, directing and film there have been honorary awards which weren't always presented on a consistent annual basis. As of the 19th Empire Awards three honorary awards are currently handed out: Empire Hero Award, Empire Inspiration Award and Icon Award.

The Empire Award for The Art of 3D was an Empire Award presented annually by the British film magazine Empire to honor the best 3D film of the previous year. The Empire Award for The Art of 3D was first introduced at the 17th Empire Awards ceremony in 2012 with The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn receiving the award and last presented at the 18th Empire Awards ceremony in 2013 with Dredd receiving the award. Winners were voted by the readers of Empire magazine.
