The 183A Toll Road or 183A is a controlled-access toll road in the Austin metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. The road includes sections in north Austin, Cedar Park, and Leander. [2] It provides a bypass for U.S. Route 183. The road is owned and operated by the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority. The 183A Toll road is electronic only and has no cash toll booths. Motorists driving without a toll tag will receive a bill in the mail payable within 30 days. The tolled portion of the highway runs from US 183 near SH-45 to FM 2243 in Leander.

Route description

The 183A Toll Road starts in Austin at an interchange with US 183 and SH 45. The freeway runs north to a point near Fenway Park where US 183 turns off to the north-northwest. From that location, the toll road runs to the north through an area composed of residential subdivisions. Near Heritage Park, there is an interchange for Whitestone Boulevard near some commercial developments. Near the interchange with RM 2243, 183A turns to the northwest and ends at a connection with US 183 in Leander. [3]

Violation fees

If a TxTag holder (or customer of any other acceptable toll-tag) has a TxTag account with a negative balance, Municipal Services Bureau (MSB) will mail a separate bill with a higher fee. [5]

Violation fees are fees added to an unpaid pay-by-mail bill. An unpaid bill can accrue up to $60 in fees after 90 days.

History

The first section of the toll road opened in March 2007 between RM 620 and RM 1431. [6] As initial traffic was higher than expected, the toll road was extended 5 miles to the north. The Phase II extension opened on April 6, 2012 at a cost of $105 million. [7] The 6.6 mile Phase III extension from Hero Way to north of SH 29 in Liberty Hill has been approved. [8] Construction on Phase 3 began in April 2021, and the roadway is expected to open in early 2025. [9] It will run on the current alignment of US 183 north of Leander.

The President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT) is a 52-mile (84 km) controlled-access toll road running through the northern, northeastern and western suburbs, forming a partial loop around Dallas, Texas, United States. At its west end near Belt Line Road in Irving, State Highway 161 continues southwest to Interstate 20 (I-20) in Grand Prairie. The discontinuous free frontage roads along the turnpike from I-35E in Carrollton east to its end at I-30 in Garland are assigned the State Highway 190 designation. SH 190 signage appears only along the Rowlett, Garland, Richardson, Plano, and Carrollton sections of the frontage road with the undersign "frontage road only". At intersections with city streets, only the Bush Turnpike signs are displayed, not the SH 190 signage. Prior to the construction of the main lanes as a tollway, SH 190 was used as the name of the planned main lanes too. Similarly, the part west of I-35E was planned as part of SH 161. Ranch to Market Road 620 is a ranch to market road in Travis and Williamson counties in Texas, United States, that is maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The 27.1-mile (43.6 km) road begins at SH 71 in Bee Cave in Travis County west of Austin passing along southeastern Lake Travis, western Austin, and several suburban communities west and north of Austin before ending at Bus. There are approximately 25 current toll roads in the state of Texas. Toll roads are more common in Texas than in many other U.S. states, since the relatively low revenues from the state's gasoline tax limits highway planners' means to fund the construction and operation of highways.

The North Tarrant Express (NTE) project is a total highway reconstruction of the Interstate 820 (I-820) and State Highway 121/State Highway 183 corridor between I-35W and Industrial Boulevard in Northeast Tarrant County, Texas. The NTE and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) anticipate the new highway system will relieve traffic congestion, improve safety on its roadways and have integrated plans for the anticipated traffic growth in one of the country’s fastest developing regions. When the improvements are completed, the $2.5 billion North Tarrant Express will have upgraded main highway lanes, continuous frontage roads, and 13.3 miles (21.4 km) of newly added tolled managed lanes.
