The 1902 Andijan earthquake occurred on December 16 with a surface wave magnitude of 6.4 and a maximum perceived Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). The city was leveled and over 4,000 people died. [2] More than 40,000 homes were destroyed in the Andijan Region of Uzbekistan. This was the worst earthquake to occur in Uzbekistan in the 20th century. [3]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Andijan uprising of 1898</span> 1898 rebellion in the Russian Empire in present-day Uzbekistan

The Andijan uprising of 1898 was a nationalist rebellion which occurred on 29 May [O.S. 17 May] 1898. Around 1,500 armed men attacked the Russian forces at Andijan, under the direction of the Naqshbandi Sufi sheikh "Dukchi Ishan" (1856–1898). The attack saw the rebels surround the camp, taking the soldiers of the 20th Russian battalion by complete surprise. However, the Russian troops quickly regrouped and managed to rout the rebels. The uprising lasted about 15 minutes.

On 13 May 2005, protests erupted in Andijan, Uzbekistan. At one point, troops from the Uzbek National Security Service (SNB) fired into a crowd of protesters. Estimates of those killed on 13 May range from 187, the official count of the government, to several hundred. A defector from the SNB alleged that 1,500 were killed. The bodies of many of those who died were allegedly hidden in mass graves following the massacre.

Qoʻrgʻontepa is a small city and seat of Qoʻrgʻontepa District, in Andijan Region in eastern Uzbekistan. It is located roughly 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Osh, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. In 1989 it had a population of 19,565, and 30,800 in 2016. In 1976 Qo’rg’ontepa was granted city status. The city has a cotton factory, a tool factory and sewing factory. The city is located on the Uzbek Railways Andijan-Karasu line.

Andijan Jame Mosque Complex architectural monument. It consists of a mosque, a madrasa, and a minaret. In the mid-19th century, the city status was granted to settlements with a mosque in Uzbekistan. Complex Jami took place from 1883 to 1890. The total area of the complex is 1.5 hectares. Within the complex, the Andijon Region Literary and Art Museum is located.
